Police “Enquiries” Into Polling Station Incident

November 10, 2014

OBA Chair Senator Lynne Woolridge alleged that Opposition Leader Marc Bean subjected OBA Communications Chair Toni Daniels to what she said was a “tirade” last Thursday afternoon at the Advance Poll for Constituency 33.

Senator Woolridge said she was “absolutely disgusted”, and said that Ms. Daniels has made a complaint to the Police, and the police have confirmed they are “conducting enquiries” into a complaint following an incident on Thursday.

A police spokesperson said, “The BPS is conducting enquiries into a complaint stemming from an incident that took place on Thursday, November 6th outside the advanced polling station for Constituency 33 in Sandys parish.

“No arrests have been made at this point but the police are speaking to a number of witnesses to establish whether any criminal offences may have been committed.”

  1. OBA Walks Out Of House To Protest Marc Bean - Bernews.com : Bernews.com | November 14, 2014
  1. Sky Pirate says:

    Book him Danno!

    • sandman says:

Parliamentary Elections Act makes it an offence to engage in violent, offensive or disorderly conduct within 50m of an election room. Punishable by 9 months in prison.

The integrity of the democratic process is crucial. Voters, candidates and supporters must be able to engage in the process without fear of being abused.

If this allegation has any truth to it then we can only hope that the police will take it very seriously

      • I says:

Just as serious as they did with the oba’s bank accounts?

        • Chumba Womba says:

The OBAs bank accounts. At least the money used was private funds given to the OBA and to be used by the OBA.

What about the 800 mil that went missing in the PLP 14 years

      • Hurricane says:

Nowhere did I read that there was anything violent. I’m understanding that the alleged tirade was “disgusting”.

        • 32n64w says:

Violent? No. Offensive or disorderly? Most definitely. He should be held to task and the relevants laws upheld.

        • sandman says:

The conduct does not need to be violent to be illegal. It is illegal to engage in disorderly or offensive conduct, and for very good reason.

Whether or not there was such conduct I have no knowledge, but let’s at least be clear on what the expected standards are for politicians during election time.

        • Kunta says:

          Bo ho ho, Surrogates.

      • Rich says:

There are also a number of offences under the Summary Offences Act 1926 and the Public Order Act 1964 that might be at play.

      • Scoalsy says:

Don’t know why they are investigating because NOTHING will be done about it even if it is proving true just like all the other times during 14 years :(

  2. Lois Frederick says:

Surprise surprise. Not. In fact sounds about at the same gutter level talk as the Nandi incident. Premier Bean. I think not.

    • Sally says:

Sad to hear that the OBA are involved in yet another scandal! This is making me become disillusioned with the direction of the party. In less than 2 years too many scandals. This matter did not need to become public, unless there is a political agenda at play by Ms Daniels. She seems to be nothing but drama so far. OBA need to clean up shop, and that means Toni Daniels and the others like Nandi. When will the OBA get on with the real business of this country? Unnecessary situation and waste of our taxpayers money. Stop focusing on the Opposition and get on with it.

      • Trulytruly says:

You seem to have got the wrong end of the stick with this matter. Toni Daniels was the one who allegedly was verbally abused, not the other way around. Please reread the article above. I am sure you will now, as a woman, have great sympathy for her, being put in such an awful position.

        • Sally says:

Does not matter this is a silly immature situation that does not need to be made a public one. It does not show her in a good light with all the other scandals the OBA has been going through this year. Somethings are left better alone. OBA are the government they must stand above such action to show the Opposition they are better than this, but instead they are falling On a lot of pettiness. We have more serious issues at state so let’s get on with it. Seems like some folks like political drama only. I am growing tried of it and Toni Daniels and Nandi does the OBA no good in my opinion. We must step above such actions.

      • Longtail says:

No Sally…. this is Marc Bean involved in another scandal….. didn’t you read the article? Stop enabling this kind of behaviour by looking the other way!

  3. Takbir Karriem Sharrieff says:

Immaturity all round…..not ready for Political cut and thrust…..!

  4. Two sides to every story.

  5. Sally says:

Lets wait for the facts to be investigated, or is this political fishing!

  6. Allspice says:

Running to the cops is no way to demonstrate strength of character …. any more than publicly losing your temper over politics and having a hissy fit.

    What a shame.

    • Creamy says:

So when a man allegedly picks on a woman, the woman shouldn’t seek help? Got it. That’s the PLP’s advice, is it?

    • Rich says:

Running to the cops when a criminal offence is suspected?

We must have a different definition of ‘strength of character’. It’s that sort of shaming that leads many criminal wrong-doing to get swept under the rug.

    • Annie says:

@Allspice: I actually agree…we Bermudians really need to grow up sometimes…

  7. Local Yokle says:

If true, a good clean sweep needs to take place….

  8. RealBermudianNutjob says:

    Too bad it wasn’t taped.

  9. cmbbda says:

If this is found to be true (whether chargeable or not) I will be utterly disgusted and subsequently will feel that Mr. Bean will have no choice other than to resign.

Abuse (whether verbal or physical) against women should not and cannot be tolerated.

  10. Well says:

    Here we go again…..

  11. Rasta says:

Nobody will be charged, even if there was wrong doing!

  12. cmbbda says:

  13. sparky says:

Sad day for Bermuda. Alaska hall must be abuzz. Catch more flies with sugar than vinegar, as my granny would say.

  14. Rhonda says:

USA style politics, the scandal before the election… the OBA are desperate…… a Foul mouth altercation..requires to services of BPS… what happened to our freedoms…..

    • Navin Johnson says:

and why would the OBA be desperate? I think you mean the PLP are desperate right?

    • Creamy says:

When did anything like this happen in the US?

    • Common Sense says:

So, according to Rhonda, Ms Daniels attends the polling station to exercise her democratic right to vote and is approached by the leader of the Opposition who makes remarks to her, and this is described as “U.S. style politics”! Could Rhonda please explain why Mr. Bean have reason to say ANYTHING to Ms Daniels after their past history. It beggars belief that he would put himself in this predicament. I expect better from a senior politician.

    • Strike fund says:

      What a stupid last comment.
Freedoms don’t allow you to behave however you like.

    • Rich says:

The OBA are desperate? To win a seat they never had a chance of winning?

  15. Raymond Ray says:

As always, “time will tell” :-(

  16. Terry says:

    Desperate folks out there.

  17. Truth is killin' me... says:

Bean talks so eloquently! This would never come from his mouth.

  18. swing voter says:

everybody has a camera phone…..I even saw a bum with one!

  19. campervan says:

Bullying the gay community with invective rhetoric is already on record.
why so surprised about this latest allegation?

  20. Common Sense says:

In view of the past issues between ms Daniels and Opposition Leader Marc Bean can anyone please explain why on earth Mr. Bean would have any reason whatever to even approach Ms. Daniels at a polling station while she is exercising her democratic right to vote. If Mr bean approached her at all it shows a complete lack of both maturity and common sense.

  21. Rhonda says:

Aren’t police/security stationed at every polling station..

    • Triangle Drifter says:

On election day, yes. On pre poll day when one would think that things are quiet, especially between political personalitys, apparently they are needed now if not already there.

    • Local Yokle says:

Yes Rhonda and the police make it a habit of standing right next to politicians so that they can see and hear everything that takes place.

    • 32n64w says:

So its ok when the leader of the PLP allegedly insults someone personally while out campaigning for the public’s vote but when a private citizen tells marchers to go back to work that’s different? Why do Mark Bean’s freedoms trump Joanne McPhee’s? Yet again reality has an anti-PLP bias

The only person potentially guilty of gutter politics is Mark Bean who has repeatedly made a name for himself with multiple childish tirades and juvenile Potteresque outbursts. You may call his pontifications freedom of expression, but any rational unbiased observer consider them the musings of an unprofessional political hack reminiscent of a schoolyard bully who should be expelled from politics.

  22. O blah dee Oh blah da says:

When is he going to resign? Shameful, disgusting and disgraceful. And he calls himself a leader. Holy smokes!!! No way. Time to go.This is not looking good for the PLP at all.

  23. Come On Man says:

They’re all a bunch of dreamers.Save the drama for your mama.

  24. Soap Opera says:

Ever since the OBA has been in power, this country has become like a Movie.

So as leaders you think this is a big show, start doing what needs to be done.

Which is why some people voted this party in, and stop disrespecting the country by acting out on everything you hear or see.

When PLP was in power you were casting stones, now you are power its like ok what are we going to find today or who are we going to pick on todsy somewhat like bullying to me.

Grow up OBA and stop throwing stones and being a bully.

Start setting examples for the Seniors who know all about this country and are probably devastated to know after all these years of sweat and tears what a disgrace this little Island has become.

Show the youth examples so they will not have to fall into your same cry baby movie mentality, and move on with what needs to be done in this Island home called Bermuda.

    • Creamy says:

So who do you think was “being a bully” in this case?

      • Soap Opera says:

If you follow politicks, then who do you think is the bully here?

I can care less if you don’t like my opinion to my previous comment.

But at the end of the day neither party is showing examples for this country.

Instead of trying to ask who is the bully. Lets start asking when is things going to get better in Bermuda.

Also these last few months I have not seen anything change but party member read between the lines. What does that show you?

Has any of your family members fought for blood, sweat and tears.

Look at the example over the holiday. First time family members could not march for their own War Veterans.

        SMH

    • cmbbda says:

According to this article it was not the OBA who was the bully…

    • Ronald says:

Yea, show the youth examples….you mean like the fantastic ones the prior govt has shown them? Dear God we are in trouble if that’s who our youth take examples from. God help us all!

  25. sandman says:

Sometimes I wonder if there really was an OBA Secret Plan and that getting Marc Bean elected as PLP leader is the Plan’s masterstroke.

If these allegations are true then the PLP ought to be concerned….

  26. Spittal pond skink says:

Bean at his best… expect everything less!!

  27. um just saying says:

Is there still such a thing as Freedom of Speech? Unless he uttered profanities, derogatory or racial comments, what charges is sha reporting?

  28. MAKE MY DAY says:

I hope she *SUE’s* him for defamation-of-character – if he said a bunch-of-crap to her in public… As there will be many witnesses!!

  29. Get A Life says:

immature, childish politics. and we wonder why we are so far removed from the real world. outsiders must be laughing their collective a+++s off out our state of affairs ON BOTH SIDES!

    • Hurricane says:

“Outsiders”……….they have their own affairs to laugh at. Do/should we really care if they are laughing at us?

  30. Alvin Williams says:

I have been dealing and commenting on Bermudian politics for years; have read seen and have been made angry at many policies throughout those years and have responded in kind. Never once lost my cool. Used effective political respond no matter how many names I have been called; no matter how many attempts have been made to discredit what I have stated. This is not to say that I can not be wrong or even proven to be wrong; The fact is I continue to learn and what I have learn used to my benefit. I have also depended on the experiences of those who came before me. What I am saying about this alleged incidence; ‘Stuff the small stuff’. Realize when the inconsequential is been used to detract from the real issues and above all don’t lose your cool.

  32. agatha christie says:

If true, he has to resign as leader. If he does not, I hope everyone remembers when it is time to vote.

  33. Jus' Askin' says:

Are we really going to use taxpayer dollars for this?
Marc Bean was Mean to Me… really OBA, really ;-)

  34. watching says:

    I am so confused.
if Ms. Daniels was so aggrieved by things said in a conversation with Mr. Bean, at the Advance Poll, then why did she not go straight to the Police who are generally present at the polling station?
In addition, do people generally go to the police and file a complaint if aggrieved in a conversation.
I am sorry, this reeks of trying to get political mileage out of a conversation, especially with an impending bye-election.
And what does any of this have to do with the PLP Candidate Jamahl Simmons? likely he was greeting voters and he is not responsible for anything that the Leader said.
This is the OBA chair and Senator Lynne Woolridge grasping at straws. Very disappointed in her. Expected better from her.
The OBA obviously realize that Ms. Daniels Opinion column did not get the desired response and are trying to repair their image and get the women on their side. Their efforts are futile.
C33 is PLP Strong and on Nov 18th there will be a strong showing from Jamahl Simmons.

    • jt says:

Of course we don’t know the nature of what was said – but would you be prepared to be disappointed with Mr. Bean?

    • Malachi says:

Correct me if I am wrong, but didn’t the story state that she made a complaint to the BPS?

As the details of this alleged confrontation are not clear, why are you jumping to conclusions as to Ms. Daniel’s motives?

I hope you are not one of those people whose only exercise is RUNNING, PUSHING, and JUMPING:

RUNNING your mouth, PUSHING your luck, and JUMPING to conclusions.

  35. Thelma Foster says:

    everything will be airight

  36. the correct facts says:

Most here are grasping at straws.
Its obvious that there is enough merrit for the police to investigate, because they are so stop guessing at who said or did whatever and await the outcome if there is one.

  37. Runner says:

Heaven help us if Marc Bean is ever the leader of Bermuda.

  38. rabbid says:

Marc Bean needs to grow up!

  39. just saying says:

Mr Bean does not have what it takes to represent our lovely country…he still has a lot to learn…he needs some serious training in public speaking and now clearly public behavior and diplomacy…when you are running for office you have to be squeaky clean…Please hand over the reins to Mr. Burt who is so much more articulate…

  40. Balanced Facts says:

Rally around your leader PLP die hards…make every excuse for him you can come up with and don’t let him resign or get pushed out…we need him!!!
