Flare In St. David’s Prompts Emergency Calls

March 24, 2015

A single red marine distress flare seen in the area of St. David’s Lighthouse prompted a number of calls to local officials on Saturday [March 21], with an investigation not revealing anyone in distress.

A Bermuda Maritime Operations Centre spokesperson said, “On Saturday 21st March at 6.10pm, multiple telephone calls were received at RCC Bermuda reporting the sighting of a single red marine distress flare.

“The flare was seen in the area of the St. David’s Lighthouse by several observers in St. David’s and St. George’s, with several reports via the 911 emergency system.

“Bermuda Radio made several urgent broadcasts requesting any vessels needing assistance to make contact and via Bermuda Police Service, dispatched a patrol car to the area to investigate but received no replies or reports of any vessel in the area needing assistance.

“No vessels were observed from the lighthouse area nor visible from the RCC. With no reports of anyone in distress, Bermuda Radio cancelled the broadcasts without further incident.”

If I’m not mistaken, aren’t there several boats operated by police for emergencies etc. and where were they? Having them in Hamilton Harbour isn’t any help to someone who’s in distress and is off shore at either end of the Island :-(
