A Good Samaritan assisted someone after their vessel “tangled the deployed anchor line in the vessels propellor causing instability” resulting in a capsize approximately 400 yards offshore.

A Bermuda Maritime Operations Centre spokesperson said, “Bermuda Maritime Operations Centre received a 911 call from a member of public located in the vicinity of Hungry Bay looking out off South Shore and reported what appeared to be, a 20ft vessel capsized approximately 400 yards offshore. Further visual reports received confirmed a person on the upturned hull of the vessel.

“Bermuda Radio commenced urgency broadcasts on Marine VHF for any vessels in the area able to assist, and relayed the distress situation to the RBR Coast Guard who started heading to the scene of the incident.

“Approximately 15 minutes later the stricken sailor was recovered by a Good Samaritan who had proceeded out on a vessel from Hungry Bay, bringing him safely back inshore without any injuries to Hungry Bay.

“It transpired the 22ft vessel Step Aside had tangled the deployed anchor line in the vessels propellor causing instability, resulting in the capsize, confirming only one person had been on the vessel. Further assessment will be made to see if the vessel can be recovered from the scene.”
