The Junior Athlete Sponsorships event was held yesterday [April 30], with the awardees including Kristen Bean, Sakari Famous, Adam Hall, Robin Horsfield, Dylan Pratt, Delray Rawlins, Jakob Resnick, Tyler Smith, Raushon Tankard, Azari Thomas, Nathan Trott, and Cecilia Wollmann.

The proceedings included remarks from Minister of Community, Culture and Sports Patricia Gordon-Pamplin and 2009 and 2010 award recipient Jaylynn Hines.

The awards – handed out to 12 young athletes – were presented by Minister Gordon-Pamplin, who said, “The objective of this program is to provide financial support to young Bermudian athletes and to assist them in their pursuit of athletic and academic excellence.”

Once guests were seated, the event got underway with a welcome from Norbert Simons, Direct of Youth, Sport, and Recreation, followed by remarks from Minister Gordon-Pamplin and words of encouragement from Ms. Hines.

Lunch was then served, with the presentation of awards taking place afterward.

The overview of the 12 outstanding young athletes presented yesterday follows below:

Bermuda Equestrian Federation: Kristen M Bean

Madam Minister, distinguished guest, ladies and gentleman.

Our first recipient for a National Junior Sponsorship Award comes to us from the sport of Equestrisum. She is 15 years of age and attends Mt. Saint Agnes Academy. She has been riding for over ten years.

She has plans to represent Bermuda in the FEI World Jumping Competition in category A, B & C. She plans to spend the next two [2] summers training in Florida with former grand prix rider Allan Korotkin and elite trainer Susan Tuccinardi of Castlewood Farm Inc.

Once she graduates from school in 2017, she plans to further her education in Toronto. Our recipient has aspirations of qualifying for the North American Young Riders Competition and The Winter Equestrian Games.

To assist our recipient, the Bermuda Equestrian Federation has been granted the sum of $4,040.00 for Kristen Bean to attend the Fox Lea Horse Show in Venice, Florida, airfare; accommodation; gear; equipment; coaching and fees as indicated in the application.

Bermuda National Athletic Association – Sakari Famous

Our next recipient for a National Junior Sponsorships Award comes to us from the Sport of Track and Field Athletics. She is fifteen [15] years of age and attends Berkeley Institute.

Our recipient has been jumping for over five [5] years and has represented Bermuda at three major junior athletic competitions. In 2013 and 2014 she competed in the Carifta Games in Bahamas and Martinique where she captured a silver medal in both meets. Also in 2014 she competed at the Junior Central American and Caribbean Athletic Championships in Mexico where she placed fourth overall. However, her most outstanding performance was at the 2014 Russell E Blunt East Coast Invitational Age group track meet where she established a new meet record in the 13-14 girls high jump and broke the US National record with a personal best leap of 1.75 meters or 5 feet 8 inches.

Our recipient plans to compete at the 2016 IAAF World Junior Championship in Russia, the Youth Olympic Games in 2018 and enter a Division 1 level University in the United States.

To assist our recipient, the Bermuda National Athletic Association has been granted the sum of $2,978.00 for Sakari Famous to have special coaching sessions with coach, Henk Kraaijienhof in Bermuda, which includes airfare; accommodation; coaching fees and meals as indicated in the application.

Bermuda Baseball Federation – Adam R. Hall

Our next recipient for a National Junior Sponsorship Award comes to us from Baseball. He attends AB. Lucas School in Ontario, Canada and is fifteen [15] years of age. He has been playing baseball since the age of six under the Y.A.O. Baseball programme. At age twelve [12] he began playing baseball with London Badgers AAA team in Ontario, Canada. Our recipient has played with the Great Lake Canadian under Eighteen Elite traveling team where he was the youngest player on the team and batted in the top three positions in the batting order.

In 2014, our recipient participated in two [2] major league baseball scouting camps and 12 scouting show cases. As a result of his performance in these camps, he has received interest from 40 colleges, many of them Division 1 schools.

Our recipient plans to secure a scholarship at a top US Division 1 school where he would be scouted and drafted by a major league baseball team.

To assist our recipient the Bermuda Baseball Federation has been granted the sum of $4,580.00 for Adam Hall to attend Perfect Game World Batting Tournament with Arizona Diamondback Scouting team in Florida, Ohio, Indiana and Ontario which includes airfare; accommodation and meals as indicated on the application.

Bermuda Bicycle Association – Robin Colin Horsefield

Our next recipient for the National Junior Sponsorship Awards comes to us from the sport of cycling. He is fifteen [15] years of age and attends Somerfield Academy.

Since 2013, our recipient has competed in four major events which includes the 2013 and 2014 Canadian National Championships were he placed 20th in the Under 15 boys Division and 26th in the Under 17 boys Division. Also, in 2014 he competed in the Crank the Shield Stage Race in Ontario, and the Ontario Cup in Sudbury and the Midlands. While competing in Bermuda our recipient had two [2] first place finishes and two [2] second place finishes in the Flying Colour MTB Series.

Our recipient plans to compete in the 2015 Canadian National Mountain Bike Championships, the 2016 Pan American Junior Mountain Biking Championships and the Junior Caribbean Mountain Biking Championship.

To assist our recipient the Bermuda Bicycle Association has been granted the sum of $3,805.00 for Robin Horsefield to attend the Ontario Cup Races at Horseshoe Valley Harwood Hills, St. Paul and the Canadian National Championships which includes accommodation, race and registration fees; bike fees and transportation as indicated in the application.

Bermuda Squash Racequets Association – Dylan Pratt

The next recipient for a National Junior Sponsorship Award is fifteen [15] years old and attends Warwick Academy. This will be the second year that our recipient has received an award. He has being playing this sport for the past six [6] years and has established himself as one of the top junior players on the island. He has represented Bermuda in the CASA Championships since 2012 and his top finish was in the 2012 finals when he won the Under 13 Boys Division. During the Under 15 Championships last year, our recipient finished 3rd overall.

Our recipient plans to compete in the 2015 CASA Championships in Barbados in July, and The Junior Canadian Open Championships in December. Our recipient has aspiration of winning the Bermuda National junior Squash Championships in his age division.

To assist our recipient, the Bermuda Squash Racquets Association has been granted the sum of $3,660.00 for DYLAN PRATT to attend the Junior Caribbean Championships and the Canadian Junior Open Championships that includes airfare, accommodations, gear equipment; coaching and fees as indicated in the application.

Bermuda Cricket Board – Delray M. Rawlins

Our next recipient for a National Junior Sponsorship Award comes to us from the sport of cricket. He attends Hendi Bedes Senior School in the UK and is 17 years old.

Our recipient has an impressive resume in his chosen sport of cricket. In 2013 he made his debut appearance in the senior national team. In 2014, he was selected as a member of the Bermuda Under 17 National team; he played for St. George’s Cup Match team and also played for the ICC Under 23 Americas Region All-Star Team.

Our recipient, plans to help the Bermuda under 19 National team qualify for the under 19 World Cup and be selected into a MCCU University and complete his studies and play first class cricket. He also intends to get his level [1] and level [2] coaching badge and help Bermuda achieve their division one cricket status.

To assist our recipient, the Bermuda Cricket Board has been granted the sum of $6,108.00 for Delray Rawlins to attend Hendi Bede’s Cricket School in the United Kingdom between September 2015 and December 2015, which includes half airfare and all accommodations as indicated in the application.

Bermuda Fencing Federation – Jakob Resnik

Our next recipient for a National Junior Sponsorship Awards comes to us from the sports of Fencing. Our recipient is 14 years of age and attends Saltus Academy. He has been involved with the Bermuda Fencing Federation since the age of 8. In 2014 he spent some time overseas training and competing. He was the youngest competitor in the 2014 Junior/Cadet World Championship in Plovdiv, Bulgaria. At his young age, our recipient is already a member of the United States Fencing Association.

In 2015, our recipient plans to compete at the Pan American Cadet and Junior Championships. He also plans to compete in the 2016 World Cadet and Junior Fencing Championship.

To assist our recipient with his development, the Bermuda Fencing Federation has been granted the sum of $2,374.00 for Jakob Resnik to attend the Cambridge Fencing Centre in Cambridge MA for two weeks. From July 20 to July 31, 2015 which includes accommodation as indicated on the application.

Bermuda Triathlon Association – Tyler E. Smith

Our next recipient for a National Junior Sponsorship Award comes to us from the sport of Triathlon. He is 16 years old and attends Bermuda High School. Our recipient is no stranger to the NJSA programme as he is a past recipient from 2013.

Our recipient accomplishments in 2013 and 2014 were outstanding. For example in 2013 while competing in Ontario Youth Elite Championships our recipient placed 2nd overall. During the Tokio Triathlon in Bermuda our recipient placed 4th overall. In 2014 he competed in the ITU Pan American Championships in Texas and the Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing, China. Our recipient was recently crowned the 2014 Male Junior Athlete of the Year.

Our recipient’s goal for 2015 is to continue to race at the Junior Elite level at the Canadian Junior Elite Championships and the ITU North American Championships. In 2018 our recipient plans to qualify for the Commonwealth Games.

To assist our recipient with his development, the Bermuda Triathlon Association has been granted the sum of $5,650.00 for Tyler Smith to purchase a Cervelo 55 Racing Bike as indicated on the application.

Bermuda Basketball Association – Raushon K. Tankard

The next National Junior Sponsorship Award recipient comes to us from the sport of Basketball. Our recipient played in the BBA league for a number of years before going off to school at StandStead College. He is 17 years old and plans to play collegiate level basketball. Our recipient has an exemplary basketball career. For example from 2009 to 2011 he was a member of the Warwick Academy Championship teams.

From 2013 to 2014 he was part of the Citizen High School Championship team. While playing for the Standstead College he was selected as an all-star player for the conference. Our recipient plans to continue to develop his shooting skills, improve his dribbling skills and become more explosive.

To assist our recipient with his development, the Bermuda Basketball Association has been granted the sum of $4, 608.00 for Raushon Tankard to attend the IMG Core Basketball Camp in Charlotte North Caroline, which includes accommodation as indicated in event #1 in the application.

Bermuda Hockey Federation – Azario Thomas

The next National Junior Sponsorship Award Recipient comes to us from the sport of Hockey. She has been involved in field hockey since 2011. She is the Deputy Head Girl at Saltus. Our recipient is a current member of the Bermuda Hockey Federation women’s league and represented the Bermuda National team in Canada at the Central American and Caribbean Games. She is presently captain of the Bermuda Junior National team. The BHF Youth and Development Chairman, has described our recipient as a great leader on and off the field and play with both pride and passion.

Our recipient plans to play in the 2015 Pan AM Challenge in Peru, compete in the 2016 Junior Pan AM in Trinidad and Tobago and continue to develop her skills in hockey.

To assist our recipient with her development, the Bermuda Hockey Federation has been granted the sum of $2,640.00 for AZARI THOMAS to attend the Sportways Hockey Camp in Amsterdam, which includes airfare, equipment and camp fees as indicated on the application.

Bermuda Football Association – Nathan W. Trott

Our next National Junior Sponsorship Award recipient comes to us from football. Our recipient is 16 years of age and attends Warwick Academy. He is described as a very passionate football player who is committed to his sport. Our recipient has played in various positions for his club team and the Bermuda National team.

In 2014, our recipient found a new position as a goalkeeper. While playing in the Copa de Mexico for the Men’s Under 17 National team our recipient was selected as “Man of the Match”

Our Recipient has dreams of becoming a professional football player and world class goal keeper. He also plans to assist Bermuda’s U20 national team to qualify for the U20 World Cup.

To assist with the development of our recipient, the Bermuda Football Association has been granted the sum of $4,512.00 for Nathan Trott to attend the European Pro Training Academy in the UK which includes, half the airfares, half the accommodations and training gear as indicated in the application.

Bermuda Sailing Association – Cecilia Wollmann

Our final National Junior Sponsorship Award recipient comes to us from the sport of sailing. She is 16 years if age and attends Saltus Grammar School. Our recipient is also a two time Junior Achievement Award winner and this year marks the second time that the Bermuda Sailing Association has nominated this young sailor.

During the 2014 sailing season, our recipient competed in a number of international sailing events. For example, in June while competing in the 2014 North American Radial Laser competition our recipient placed 1st in the Silver Fleet. During the 2014 CAC Games in Veracruz our recipient placed 7th. Our recipient has plans to compete in the 2015 Pan AM Games, the 2015 Laser Radial North American Cork with all events taking place in Canada.

To assist our recipient with her development, the Bermuda Sailing Association has been granted the sum of $5,045.00 for Cecilia Wollmann to attend the Laser Radial Youth World Championships which includes half airfare, accommodations; gear; equipment; boat fees; coaching and fees into the championship as indicated in the application.
