Colonial Group Sponsoring “Relay For Life”

March 2, 2016

One of the Island’s leading insurance companies is sponsoring a major event that has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for cancer research and prevention – including the Island’s new Radiation Therapy Initiative.

Colonial Group International
is sponsoring Relay For Life of Bermuda – the second time it has been a platinum sponsor.

Naz Farrow, Colonial Group International’s Chief Operating Officer for Health, said: “I attended the event last year and was blown away by the number of people who turned up to take part and to support the event.

“I said then that we would sponsor it because not only does it do so much for fundraising, it also brings together cancer survivors and sufferers as well as their families in a way no other event could match. I found last year’s event a very moving experience.”

The Mission of Relay For Life of Bermuda, which is being held at the National Sports Centre on May 27 and 28, is to raise awareness and funds to support cancer prevention and detection and to improve access to treatment with the local establishment of radiation therapy.

Ninety-five percent of the proceeds will go to the Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre and the remaining five percent will go to Global Relay For Life in the US.

Ron Spencer III, Business Developer/Account Manager at Colonial, founded Relay For Life of Bermuda in conjunction with the Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre, following the death of his mother from cancer. May 28 will mark the eighth anniversary of her death.

“This will be the third year and we have raised more than $1m in the first two years, which is pretty remarkable. This year, some teams have already started their fundraising, even before it has gone public,” said Mr Spencer.

He added: “I want to thank Colonial for again agreeing to be a platinum sponsor and I would also like to thank Ironshore, which has been our title sponsor for the last two years and which has again agreed to be our main sponsor this year.”

Following last year’s event, Mr Spencer was invited by the US Relay For Life to a leadership conference where people “were amazed at how much had been raised in Bermuda”.

“Leaders of the American Cancer Society will be here for the event this year as they were so impressed with what Bermuda managed to raise,” added Mr Spencer.
