The winners of the Digicel Business & BTC Saltus App Development competition have been announced, with Ellie Dunleavy being named as the overall winner.

Additional winners included Ryan Topple and William Welden in second and third place, respectively, as well as Emma Mayer, Maya Malpas, Willian Welch, and Isabella Murdoch.

The competition, which was open to ninth grade students, encouraged students to develop mobile applications in three different categories, including safety, environment and tourism.

A spokesperson said, “The Digicel safety app got students to consider their personal safety, green apps focused on environmental awareness such as recycling and waste reduction while blue apps focused on promoting Bermuda as a destination.”

“In addition to donating twenty Digicel smartphones, Digicel Business and BTC provided $2,000 to support costs and donated prizes for the winners of the competition.

“The overall winner was Ellie Dunleavy whose find my way back app included a location tracker and the ability to issue emergency message to multiple contacts.”

“Ryan Topple and William Welden came second and third respectively with their safety apps.”

“The other students who won awards included Emma Mayer for her app which showcased Bermudian wildlife, Maya Malpas whose app showed tourists the best places to eat and drink, Willian Welch’s app showed users the bus schedules and fares and Isabella Murdoch’s safety app.”

Niall Clyne, Head of Business Solutions at Digicel Business, who was one of the judges, said, “It’s great to see such talent coming through which bodes well for the future of the ICT and tech industry here.

“Great credit must go to Tina Fountain, Head of Creative Digital Technologies and Business Enterprise, and the staff at Saltus for giving their students the platform and confidence to develop their skills.”
