Disability Advisory Council On Support Systems

October 1, 2016

The public is invited to series of upcoming events in celebration of the United Nations International Day of Persons with Disabilities 2016, with member of the Disability Advisory Council Rechai Young noting the importance of support systems.

Rechai Young said, “A disability is a physical or mental condition that limits a person’s movements, senses or activities. Some people are born with them and others like myself receive them as a result of a major accident.

“There are many struggles we face on a daily basis where sometimes we doubt ourselves and let our situation control us. We often need help from those around us. They are a great support system. They remind us that we still have rights and are equal in society.

“A little goal such a regaining the ability to walk is great but what puts it on the good side, if we can’t work. When you are considered disabled, then some people think you can’t do much, that shouldn’t be the case. There are many things that people of disabilities can do.”

“Sometimes people around me ask “what can you do?” Just because they see a disability and that should not be the case. Actions should be louder than words.

“Who is there to help us and be our voice? A strong support system is needed to remind us that we do matter and can make a difference. Where is our support system? Don’t take away the little that we have.”

A Disability Advisory Council spokesperson said, “The Council welcomes feedback via email to dacbermuda@gmail.com.”
