Police Investigate Social Media Threat To Premier

December 3, 2016

[Updated] Police said they are “aware of the social media threats to the Premier and his family and have commenced an investigation into the matter.”

The Instagram account they appear to be referring to is set to private, has 342 followers as of this writing, and urges people to DM [direct message] to get “family info and address” and “get the plan.”

A police spokesperson said, “Police are aware of the social media threats to the Premier and his family and have commenced an investigation into the matter. Additionally, the offensive posting has been brought to the attention of the service provider for review.

“Anyone with any information that might assist police in identifying the original poster is encouraged to contact police on 295-0011 or the independent and confidential Crime Stoppers hotline on 800-8477.”

In a separate statement, Leader of the Opposition David Burt said, “I condemn in the strongest possible terms the death threats made against Premier Michael Dunkley, his family and other members of the One Bermuda Alliance.

“Although we may disagree with the OBA on best way for Bermuda, the Bermuda Progressive Labour Party does not condone violence of any kind, for any reason, against the Premier or any members of the OBA.”

Update 3.56pm: The Instagram account is now “unavailable”, meaning it has been removed – either by the person who started it or the service provider.

  1. NO MORE WAR says:

Sad times ahead. Please for the love of God OBA let the AG look over the deal before it’s debated on. This deal is set for a long time and I am more then sure private citizens would never enter in to such a long deal without crossing every single T and dotting every single i. And probably going back over it a few times to ensure it’s sound. Remember you are doing the work of the people and not the other way round.

Let’s stop the threats and get on with the proper running of this wonderful island that all involved are tearing down.

    • Yawn says:

The AG has stated it as not in her remit. That she has neither the time or fiscal resources.

    • hmmm says:

I recall Government MP Nandi Davis refusing to speak publicly about reports that a series of offensive messages was sent from Ms Davis’s Facebook account. The MP claimed that her account had been hacked!

Stop throwing stones the person’s social media account might have been hacked. What’s good for the goose is good for the gander.

      • VJ says:

Her FB account hacked apparently knew exactly who to contact… hmm…

    • Point boy says:

I think we’re on the same page. But. I disagree. Once allowed in the house, we have the damn vote. Do it and move on.

It’s very sad that a (very-few) can disrupt the business of all honest working Bermudians

Don’t forget schools were in!! (No busses)?

    • Onion Juice says:

Even though I dont condone it, now you know what Black Leaders have been going through since we were stolen.
Dr. Brown (as much as I didnt agree with some of his decisions) went through worst and you same U.B.P. supporters endorced it or claimed he dit it himself.
The chickens have come home to roost.

    • Widget says:

Unless the mindset of all Bermudians changes this beautiful little island we all call home is doomed.

  2. Jus' Askin' says:

This is Not Good At ALL

    • Truth says:

When someone attempted to mail a bullet to the former Premier Ewart Brown all you UBP/OBA hypocrites didn’t show any remorse for the man and his family.

I wonder if you people can actually taste the BS as it spills out the corners of your fake sad smiles. Change the name back to UBP and find another John Swan that can relate to the people or is it easier to spray Seniors with pepper spray!

      • Toodle-oo says:

You mean to say that you really ,really believe that that bit of political theatrics was orchestrated by a UBP supporter ?

And if it hardly needs to be reiterated or said again , it was the Police’s decision to use pepper spray. NOT the OBA’s

      • hmmm says:

I think most people showed concern, but hey don’t let the truth get in the way !!!

      • Four says:

It’s amazing never heard anything more of that. Things that make you go hmmmm.

      • TSOL says:

No one showed any remorse to him or his family because he sent it to himself if it really ever happened at all. You must be drinking deep from the green kool-aid.

      • Earth watch police says:

Plp men are cowards when the police showed up they pushed the old ladies to the front to be used as shields.

  3. wondering says:

Burt is so naive to think that this wouldn’t happen. Inept leadership is equal to chaos and anarchy.

    • Smh says:

      You mean OBA is naive?

      • hmmm says:

No Burt and Furbert ramping up emotions with misinformation and chest thumping.

Burt is in it to win votes in the next election. Nothing more nothing less. his allegiences stop on his front door. If you don’t believe that go as Marc Bean , Marc Daniels and others.

  4. Devonshire Devils Advocate says:

    Shameful…

  5. Sandra Caulinesy says:

Wow…this issue has gone way too far. I mean is all this worth it? It’s an airport deal….do you have to make it into death threats to the the Premier and his family? Gosh…these people are going way too far. Don’t get me twisted I am against how this deal of the airport is going or wants to go down but its not work taking a life over it. Really?? What inhumane person would take it that far and have over 300 followers either thinking it or in agreement with it. Death threats is not the way to solve disagreements its not that you don’t know already…wow…come on people (as in those involved with this instagram acct.)

    • VJ says:

I think the threats are more because of what happened yesterday, and not due to the airport deal itself per se.

In any event, although I’m a PLP supporter, I would never wish harm on the Premier. And his family are totally innocent, so why even bring them into this. There are some sick people out there, and I hope the police track them down and press charges.

    • Not exactly says:

The account was not set up and THEN attracted 300 followers. It was clearly an existing account that had followers and THEN changed profile information to the threat. I have no doubts that St. John’s Ambulance, BEDC, etc would not follow something that was set us as the threat originally.

    • Legalgal says:

This type of intimidation and race hate worked over Pathways. The precedent has been set. Please don’t cave in. Apply and respect the law.

  6. These threats to the Premier and his family is not called for and the culprits need to be brought to justice, many can say what they want, I don’t like Micheal Dunkley’s form of administration, but I don’t think any should stand for or condone acts of violence against him, his family or any politicians.

The only language the O.B.A understand is the almighty dollar. I say hit them in their pocket and cripple them economically and then we will get results as a people.

    • almost says:

We already have been crippled economically by the PLP!!!!! The OBA were elected to sort that mess out, and so far are doing a great job of doing just that.

HOWEVER, their non-tendering of the airport project is a mistake. Can it all and tender it. End of problem.

      • Sickofantz says:

Except there is no money so it cannot go out to tender. We wouldn’t be able to get a loan. The only way to build and airport at the moment is through a PPP and this is the best deal we will get.

        RIP DEMOCRACY IN BERMUDA.

    • Punch says:

Unfortunately if you cripple them economically it will further cripple the people of Bermuda.

      • VJ says:

        Nope, cripple their PERSONAL enterprises.

        • Mike S says:

Their personal enterprises employ many Bermudians. Cripple them and put your fellow Bermudians out of work. Just what Bermuda needs.

          Think things through!

  7. Real Deal says:

I don’t think there is a threat this is just like the bullet thing when brown was in power. For me I use my dollar. I have not drunk and mil;k ever since the first march on the hill. Trust me I love my Cookies and cream milk shakes but I love my country even more.

  8. Jadon says:

Funny how all of sudden these threats are so “evil” but when they were made against Dr. Brown you barely heard a peep. I don’t think it is right. But I fight for equal rights…

    • Mercy says:

In the time period of which the threats were made to Dr Brown, we didn’t really have the technology we have now – a world that revolved around social media, with the ability to peruse the internet so easily, and speak as freely as we do now via mobile interactions. At the time he was threatened it was in the paper, on the radio, and on the television. It was on the internet too. Did you expect anything more?

    • Zevon says:

      Twitter threats to Ewart? When?

  9. @anydeeng says:

Doesnt add up… And creates sympathy for the oba and allows the supporters of this bill a disingenuous motive for thier scorn of ones involved in the protest. some ppl are gunna eat this article up.

  10. Thumbs up says:

In the event this was brought to attention by an individual, and not police intelligence, thank you for being the example to speak up.

  11. let the truth be told says:

Ok so what im reading is:

    1. Its ok for the POLICE, WHO IS SUPPOSE TO PROTECT US to pepper spray INNOCENT/ELDERLY people in their faces for taking a stand for their country.

To me a threat is a threat no matter how it was said or done…the police hurt people

I say the investigation needs to start with the police into their actions used yesterday. There are enough videos going around to help put the puzzle together.

IN CLOSING REMEMBER: IF THE SHOE FITS WEAR IT….DO UNTO OTHERS AS YOU WILL HAVE THEM DO UNTO YOU.

MY PRAYERS GO OUT FOR ALL OF THE EDERLY(WHO WERE SO DISRESPECTED), THE BUS DRIVER(WHO THE POLICE THROW TO THE GROUND) AND FOR EVERYONE ELSE WHO WAS TREATED BADLY. SPEEDY RECOVERY.

THE LORD ABOVE DOES NOT SLEEP…TRUST -N- BELIEVE

    • Jim says:

You have no clue what you’re talking about. The ‘LORD ABOVE’ does not give a damn about an airport.

FACT: IF THE PEOPLE DID NOT BLOCK ACCESS TO THE HOUSE AND BREAK THE LAW, IT WOULD HAVE REMAINED PEACEFUL. YOU CANNOT PUSH POLICE OFFICERS AROUND AND OBSTRUCT THEM FROM DOING THEIR JOB.

If you think the Police should back down and show weakness every time some fools wanna protest and break the law, you need a reality check (and just got one).

      TRUST

      • Onion Juice says:

FACT IS IF THIS GOVERNMENT WOULD HAVE NOT GAVE OUR AIRPORT AWAY TO CANADA FOR 3O YEARS AND PUT IT OUT TO TENDER, LET THE OPPOSITION SEE DE FULL CONTRACT BEFORE THEY VOTE ON IT AND LISTENED TO DE 75% OF BERMUDIANS THAT WERE POLLED……
        We would’ve avoided this.
This reminds me off dictorial Governments that do want they want and then use their Bull S!@# legal system and military to justify their evil works.

    • Up D hill says:

@let truth be told , you need to stop using the Lords name!! The Lord does not see things according to you so knock it off !!

    • Mike S says:

They peopl at the protest were not innocent. They were ignoring lawful orders by the police. They were attacking the basis of the ability of any to be able to govern Bermuda. The last time this happened government was clear that it could not allow a protest to block the duly elected representatives of the people of Bermuda from carrying out their duties. The crowd had the right to protest, but not to impede the ability of the government to function.

If this was allowed to stand no government from this day forward would every be able to pass any legislation in the least controversial as a group opposed would be able to shut down parliament at will. This is not a precedent any rational person would want. You want to defeat a government it is done at the ballot box, under the law. This was an attack on the ability of Bermuda to be governed.

  12. Glenn B says:

While we may not agree with the OBA, their policies and the way in which they are handling the business of the country, it gives no one the right to threaten to physically harm the premier and especially his family! It is sad that we,peaceful by nature, have become so angry that this, for some,is a last resort to getting a message across. Yesterdays peaceful peotest should not have ended in the police using pepper spray, especially against our most vulnerable, senior citizens!
Someone has to answer to what took place yesterday. Public apologies need to be made and the police need to shoulder some of the blame and not deflect the blame on the peaceful protesters like we saw from the COP or the Acting Governor or else next Friday will see a repeat if not a worst outcome!

  13. DJO says:

very hollow words Mr Burt especially in light of your party faithfuls call to action and lack of respect for the rule of law and access and a certain one of your parties words( referring to D Burgess ) inciteful comments

  14. mixitup says:

I don’t condone behaviour like this at all, but I do recall the same happening to a previous Premier in the form of a Bullet, the responses were non caring, non supportive and even accusing him having the Bullet mailed himself…But I won’t stoop to ‘their’ levels. The Premier should not be threatened period.

  15. watchfuleyes says:

Oh please… .much ado about nothing.

  16. I and I says:

Sounds like one of those false flag projects to me!Why on this planet would anyone threaten the life of the Premier and his own? Sounds like a sympathy program in effect. And if true why would they make such things public to further the divide?Think people ,Think……….

  17. Point boy says:

    I hope you catch (person)!
Also those who were identified as instigating unlawful behavior.

Charge them! These union reps say what they want DO what they want!
Stopping the bus and Ferry service at there pleasure is UNLAWFUL.

If it where the average Joe BLow he would be in a cell in a minute!

  18. Hayward says:

Bermuda grow up! U sound like a bunch of children.
I believe the House of Assembley and its occupants who work there should be protected. If it means having the army stand guard to protect those people and property, so be it. U are too small to have this anarchy. If this was happening in Britain or the USA capital they would ensure protection for those politians each day. The “peaceful” demonstrators would be held back and yes, pepper sprayed, or rubber bulleted if they got out of hand!
If things cant be resolved democratically and this type of behaviuor continues Bermuda is done! The world is watchingu! Sadly Mr Dunkley and others on the hill, u need to secure your businesses and family if u r getting death threats.
Praying for my Island home to come to their senses and work things put democratically with heads screwed on. Both parties need to work together please!

  19. Fluffy says:

I don’t care what good or bad decisions are made!! The bottom line is this threat should not have been made!! Whom ever you are you’re an ignorant fool…hiding behind technology but can and will be exposed!!

  20. Sad Day says:

O my gosh, OBA just let the Auditor review the contract, if it’s nothing to hide then it all good.

    • Rockfish#1nd#2 says:

The Auditor General has made her position on this matter crystal clear, are you aware of that?
      Do your homework please!

    • Mike S says:

The auditor office has already stated the office feels it is outside their remit. They will audit the performance of the contract but do not offer opinions on them beforehand. Go back and check the list of entities who already have vetted the contract.

  21. Fly it says:

Who owns the Hospital and what type of contract did they use? Hmmmm………

  22. Caitlyn says:

Stop it….. are you all speaking about the topic or the issue?
