Calling them “examples of the best of Bermuda”, Minister of National Security Wayne Caines yesterday [Nov 6] welcomed five new firefighters to the ranks of the Bermuda Fire & Rescue Service [BFRS].

Before a gathering of family, friends and fellow officers, Mahkye Steede, Jordan Govia, Amani Wears, Christopher Clarke Jr and Mathew Mills “passed out” after a 25-week training course conducted locally and in the US.

Minister Caines told the new firefighters that their entry into the BFRS was a most welcomed addition, and that the men had distinguished themselves by making the choice to serve, committing to completing the course of study and by looking out for each other.

The Minister also recognized the sacrifice of families who had supported the men through the arduous course. The BFRS Training Team was led by Divisional Officer Troy Furbert and Lt. Raymond Masters.

Yesterday’s ceremony also featured an inspection of the recruits by Minister Caines and Chief Fire Officer Reginald Burchall.

Reflecting on yesterday’s events, Minister Caines said, “A career in the BFRS is a sound choice and it was inspiring to witness the fulfillment of the goals of these Bermudian men.

“The team were recognized as more than equals on the international training stage and this speaks volumes about their abilities and the diligence of the training team in instructing them. This was a proud day for Bermuda.”
