Erica Hawley Wins CAC Regional Silver Medal

February 19, 2018

Bermuda’s Erica Hawley competed in the 2018 Bridgetown CAMTRI Sprint Triathlon American Cup and Central American and Caribbean Championship in Barbados, finishing 8th overall and 2nd in the CAC region to earn a silver medal.

Ms Hawley finished 8th overall with a time of 1:05:55, Sophie Chase from USA clocked a winning time of 1:04:07, Canada’s Dominika Jamnicky was second in 1:04:08 and Mary Alex England from USA was third in 1:04:36.

After the race, Ms Hawley said, “I had a good day, considering it was the first race of the season, but there were also a couple of mistakes made which may have cost me a couple of positions. There were some very good elite athletes here including Jamnicky who I will race against in the Commonwealth Games.”

“I had a great swim and came out with the lead group of Jamnicky, Chase, Megan Foley, Sarah Alexander and England in a time of 10:13. This was a great start to the race for me and I was glad to have a good Swim after some mishaps during the summer.

“Unfortunately when mounting my bike I fell, so this group got away from me right at the start. I rode with the Cuban Daniela Ciara Vega but she stayed on my wheel for the 20km and luckily the gaps weren’t really changing. The group ahead were not making much time on me so I knew that I was biking well, I’m just upset that I fell during the transition.

“I came off the bike in 6th position with the Vega and had a good run although I could not break away from her and she out-sprinted me at the end.

“All in all a very good first race and I’m glad I dusted off the cobwebs. It is obvious what I need to work on for future races and I have already talked to my coach about the steps that need to be made.”

Speaking on her podium spot for the CAC Region where she collected a Silver Medal, Ms Hawley said, “I am proud of that for Bermuda.”
