Hurricane Danielle Strengthens: Category 4

Hurricane Danielle became a Category 4 storm early this morning [Aug 27] and is now carrying maximum sustained winds of 135 mph (215 kph) with some additional strengthening possible. The hurricane is now considered “major” having passed the threshold of 111 mph.

Forecasters said that as of 5am this morning, Danielle was located about 545 miles (875 kilometers) southeast of Bermuda and moving north-northwest at about 12 mph (19 kph). The hurricane is forecast to pass “well east” of Bermuda tomorrow night. The US National Hurricane Center in Miami said that “interests in Bermuda should monitor the progress of Danielle,” and to expect “large waves and dangerous suuf conditions”. They have also said that the Hurricane may further intensify.

Also churning in the Atlantic is Tropical Storm Earl, which is moving west with winds of up to 45 mph, with forecasters projecting Earl to reach hurricane status by tomorrow. If this occurs, Earl would be the third hurricane of the 2010 Atlantic season, following Danielle and Hurricane Alex.
