European Champs: 16-Yr-Old Sailor Wins Bronze

September 24, 2010

image001 nagel Over the weekend while Bermuda was getting battered by Hurricane Igor, one Bermudian was far away winning a bronze medal in the European Team Racing Championships.

16-year-old sailor Emily Nagel, a product of the Bermuda Optimist Sailing Program, was part of a 6-strong team bronze medal winning team in the European Team Racing Championships in Venice, Italy.

Emily’s team from her boarding school in the UK was actually representing Britain, as the team took part as the Royal Yachting Association’s nominated Great Britain team.

“It is a surprise and a great honour for a school team to be invited to sail at this level and the students had no expectations of success” said coach Nick Neve “Two days and nine races later they were delighted to bring home bronze medals in both Open and Under 19 categories.”

Her family tells us that “her success is thanks to the dedicated coaches in Bermuda and the world class sailing programs at all the Bermuda clubs.”
