Tis the season for drinking and driving fa la la la la

    • Stunned says:

This kind of response sickens me. You ‘Jays’ should be ashamed of yourself.

What type of person sings a little diddy at the thought of a 24 year old young woman fighting for her life?!? You don’t know her – or actually maybe you do – this is Bermuda after all. You also don’t know the circumstances to the accident, and you certainly don’t deserve to sit up on your high horse and judge anybody if that is the case.

Have you NEVER made a mistake in your life?

Well its possible that this young person, yes, has just made a mistake. And she is suffering quite terribly for it right now, as are her friends and family.

My prayers go out to this young lady, and everyone affected by this accident. I will pray that she makes a speedy recovery, and IF alcohol was involved, that it opens her, and her peers eyes to their own mortality; and leads to modified behaviour, and renewed respect for their lives.

      • Jays says:

The same way I assume it’s drunk driving, is the same way you assume for my one-liner to mean “I’m a b*tch who can do no wrong.”

        Happy Holidays :)

        • Luisa says:

You stupid &%$… have some respect. This girl is my best friend. How dare you speak about her. Keep your opinions to yourself… Dont need your comments on here.

    • FIX THAT ROAD says:

Jay …what an incensitive prick you are! There is nothing in the article to indicate that she was drinking. BUT…even if she was…I hope you remember your high horse attitude when it is a member of your family that gets hurt or killed in an accident late at night. I wonder if you or any member of your family smokes…if you or they do…may you remember your high horse attitude when someone in your family gets sick of cancer and someone makes an insensitive comment. I could go on and on with examples, but you are not worth any more of my time.

We MUST have W&E address the poor road design that in my humble opinion has contributed to (not neccessarily caused) the countless number of accidents and death in that area. If you notice that stretch of road makes a sharp turn right and atthe time dips down while at the same time the angle ofthe road turns left. This design was fine back in the days of the horse drawn wagon but not today. I know…I know…if we all stayed below the speed limit it wouldnt be a problem. Now lets get back to reality. Anyone travelling at as little as 50KPH could loose control on that road with a little rain or oil in the road. Again…that road turns right, leans left and dips down quicky. Your tires will have little grip since the road , momentum and gravity are all fighting against you. Before you all make negative comments I ask you to please reserve these comments until you look at the road and take some time to research the disproportionate number of lives lost at this small section of road. Yes I know many (NOT ALL) involved speeding and / or DUI…however …the penalty for either isnt death. This unsafe stretch of road may take WILL take the life of an unsuspecting police officer, fireman or EMT responding to an emergency call.

      • The road is fine says:

Why people think the road is to blame for these accidents is beyond me…

It’s a corner. Whether its a dui, someone cut her off, slid out, at the end of the day, it is a corner none the less that we all know is there.

As for the large number of fatalities there, take note that it is the first main corner when leaving town. Im sure the majority of these accidents are DUI (again, not speculating here), and as such, if you fix this corner, there is a very good chance that these accidents would simply happen at the crow land roundabout instead. The fact that hundreds or a thousand or more people drive that corner every day with no incident should be a good indicator that the actual road structure is not the issue…

Again, if they did “fix” this, then what would you say about all the accidents that end up happening at hte roundabout? fix that?

      • mixitup says:

I actually agree that their is a design flaw on that stretch. If you are coming out of Hamilton, as mentioned, the road veers right and actually dips out of straight line sight. I am very careful, but those who are doing average speed and don’t know that the road shifts right and dips will be in trouble regardless of their speed. This is when they end up smack inside the bus stop.

  3. caroline says:

AT THIS POINT we need to stop to be sinic and put our face to the reality…this people are dead or almost dead casue they mix alcohol and drive!, They dont listen or they dont care about responsability to take your bike and drive.
Stop to drive of you are taking alcohol.
It is particular coincidation that just last night a pub offer a Custumer Appreciation Party for everyone, free alcohol for 4 hours!, it was full of team agers and the bartenders never put stop to serve shot…..make me think….probably barstender should get some responsabilitis for this terribles accident, if they see someone total drunk, they should stop serving drinks or take out the keys! and call a taxi!

Todays the beach bars will offer the same open drink….tomorrow other..and go on….so….people, please….PLEASEEEEEEEEEEEEE……LEAVE THE BIKE AT HOME,CALL TAXIS! OR JUST DONT DRINK IF YOU ARE GOING TO DRIVE. to many loss for stupid behaviour
NO GOOD!, WHAT IS GOING ON IN THIS ISLAND!!!

    • Jays says:

As I can tell from your poor english, you aren’t accustom to Bermudians love for drinking and driving. We all think we are invincible and the only option we have is free taxis after 3am hidden around a dark corner no one knows about. The government is aware of the amount of drunk driving deaths there is, and has done nothing to help the weak minded out. Free parking for those who chose to leave their car in town, free taxis at an earlier time and in a more visible/closer spot, I feel will change these numbers. It’s 50 bucks to take a taxi home or get a parking ticket, and everyones just spent all their money at the bar. They’ll risk it.

And don’t be a Debbie Downer, Customer Appreciation Nights are great, Hamilton would suck/fail if they stopped serving drunk people.

      • UncleElvis says:

I’m not sure someone who writes like you do should be talking about other folks’ English…

        • Jays says:

          I’m not sure I care.

          • GetWellSoon says:

Your comments clearly prove that your parents should have used contraception.

            • Scott says:

you guys can attack jays for “writes like” that… but in brutal reality what he says is true.

              • Mark says:

                Jay,
I’m a youngish guy who has been drunk driving most of my life but recently stopped after a good friend was killed doing it.
Your a completely insensitive person. This girl may not make it, I know that as I know a very good friend of hers. No matter what the reason, your casual attitude about it is disgusting. She has parents and friends who love her and are very worried right now. You aren’t helping. Everyone slips up some time, but they don’t deserve to possibly die or be slighted like this. I hope I never meet you, god help you if I find out who you are.

                • Bermyguy says:

First of all let me extend my condolences to the young woman and her family. This is a very serious incident and, regardless of any contributing factors, we must all have sympathy and compassion for those injured physically and emotionally by this accident. For the record: the remainder of my comment is not directly aimed in any way to this particular incident, nor am I trying to insinuate that alcohol was a contributing factor in this accident.

While Jay may have come off as blunt and insensitive he does raise some very true points. There is a non-chalant attitude towards driving under the influence in Bermuda. I am only human, and I am guilty of driving while intoxicated on the odd occasion. Free taxis are only available throughout the summer months and are not easily visible to patrons of Front Street bars. Taxis are very selective of their customers and destinations, on top of being expensive. Matched with an invulnerable attitude this makes a recipe for disaster. I have seen the odd roadblock on East Broadway at 11:30pm heading into town. How about an odd roadblock, stop and search, in the same location at 3:00am, heading out of town? It doesn’t have to be every night, or even every week, but it will at least add some level of deterrence to drinking and driving.

              • Luisa says:

He knows nothing about what happened that night so unless you know facts i suggest you and Jay f*** off!!!

      • tina says:

Perhaps the weak minded ought to stay home!!! Blaming the government or the taxi driver for your irresponsibility????? There is nothing wrong with drinking and having a good time. But drinking and driving just dont mix. Simple! IF you drink and decide to drive home, then YOU choose to put YOUR life in danger. Simple!!! You want to act like an adult, then be responsible and dont drive after drinking. make arrangements with your friends. And if your friends are good friends, they won;t let you drive home.
It is time that the partying youth accepts the responsiblity and make drinking and driving uncool!!! Perhaps we should post in the newspaper the person alcohol content in their blood after they had an accident at 3am in the morning??? Maybe give everyone a reality check!!!
Don’t blame anyone else for your irresponsible actions!!

    • Scott says:

leave the bartenders out of this.

bermudians drink and drive a) because there are very few other options, and b) there are no real punishments for it, as no one gets caught.

in the states it is a huge stigma to even think about getting behind a wheel when drunk. here, people just shrug their shoulders. why? who knows.. but the bartenders are not responsible for these people.

yes they could/should be responsible for not serving someone who is dangerously (healthwise) over the limit… but not for someone who may/may not drive.

  4. Terry says:

We should not be so quick to judge. We’ve been over this before in numerous headlines and threads. Maybe she had a seizure or someone cut her off. I am sure the police have the enqiry under control.

This particular area is a hot spot at this time of the day/night. Alcohol does play a part. Toxoligy always points in a direction.

Hope she survives her injuries and we all can move on for the beter.

  5. Road Sense says:

Everyone – - we need to pray for the young lady’s recovery – - we need to understand that people are responsible (in part or solely) for the collisions that they are involved in – - we do not know the details so to comment without the info is wrong and counterproductive – -

Focus on your thoughts on her recovery and stop the cycle by driving better yourselves – - -

  6. Eye in the sky ... says:

Because the weather was atrocious this morning at that time with reports of hail and strong wind , I think we’d all be a bit better off waiting until we have the facts of the cause of the accident.
(Not that I dont understand the concerns of drinking and driving and a possible connection to crashes that happen at the hour of the day)

  7. Hopefull says:

We have all done stupid mistakes in the past, drove too fast, had one wine to many. The majority of us are the lucky ones who have got away with it in the past. This girl is someone daughter, someone who has recently become an adult. I hope she make a full recovery and she can regain her life as soon as possible.

    • Bermyguy says:

Everyone who can comment on drinking and driving in the past is one of the lucky ones. Whether or not this accident had anything to do with alcohol, what is done is done. The best thing we can do at this point is to pray for this girl’s recovery and attempt to address the issue on East Broadway (whether it be an alcohol issue or an infrastructural issue).

  8. jredmond says:

Jays your viewpoint is assbackwards mate. It is not the governments responsibility to provide you with free rides so that you can get as hot as you want. Its your responsibility not to get so hot that you are putting your and other peoples lives in danger by driving drunk.

    • Bermyguy says:

However it is the government’s responsibility to ensure that laws are enforced. Why do people drink and drive? Because they know they can get away with it.

    • Scott says:

to be honest, it shouldnt be the govts responsibility to give free anything really.. but they do…to people who vote for them..

Still, what you say is true that personal responsibility is key here.

The speculation though, while the evidence is very continental, that alcohol was involved is not fair yet though. Late night “bike mugging”, locked up break.. who knows… i had a friend die from a bike mistake, and another in this young ladies case, again, not due to booze…. things happen.

      Wishing her the best.

  9. tina says:

We pray for this young lady’s recovery!!!!!!

  10. Budgie says:

Drinking and driving is not a ‘mistake’, it is a choice that is made by that person. Not to be disrespectful to anyones faith but praying isn’t going to help either. Educating people on that fact that if you are driving at said speed and hit a curb this is how far your body gets tossed. And if you have been drinking your reaction speed is lowered dramatically. Driving while inebriated and also driving at speed seems to cause most of the accidents that have killed MY friends on the road.
Why don’t we (as young Berudians) stop? I don’t know. I’ve known of people driving home from the wake of a family member who died from a drunk driving accident completely plastered. It doesn’t really make sense.
I vote for a smaller vehicled, more efficient taxi service. Why does one person need a van to get from Docksiders to Spanish Point? Where did all the smaller taxis go?

    • Logic76 says:

Why does taxi size matter? They all charge the same price and they all say “no” if you’re traveling too far east, or too far west!

  11. Real Talk says:

This is indeed a tragedy and thoughts and prayers are with the young lady and her family. The real tragedy in all fatalities caused by drinking and driving is that they were/are completely avoidable. I say that as the family member of an individual who was left for dead by a drunk driver.

It always amazes me that the first thing people say (particularly in this spot) is that Government needs to fix that road… How about people just stop drinking and driving?!

@ Budgie – You are absolutely correct, it is a choice made because everybody thinks they’re invisible.

  12. youngfemaleinbda says:

The fact remains that this young woman remains in the hospital fighting for her life. Why are you speculating on whether she had been drinking at the time of the accident? I wish her a speedy recovery.

Although ‘Jays’ comments were blunt and insensitive, he/she does have a point. Lots of Bermudians have a tendency to drink and drive. What can be done to change their mindset? The fact is that it is up to the individual to change their habit of DUI. I’ve seen people coming from the wake of someone who died because of drunk driving, totally smashed…it’s ironic; but it doesn’t stop them! This is not an issue that government can fix (maybe they can fix the roads) but they cannot fix the individual’s habit of DUI.

    • Stephen says:

You are definitely right that is is up to individuals to change their own habits. That being said we also need to start being more responsible for everyone we care around us. Those who drink and drive may not be interested in changing their habits, but those who choose not to drink and drive can make more of an effort to keep the keys out of their friend’s bikes and cars. When we start making it more difficult for our friends to get on the roads after a few drinks (either by talking them out of it, taking keys, putting them in a taxi etc), that is when we will start to see a change.

We can blame the drunk drivers for driving, the government for not policing, east broadway for being east broadway, but the only thing we can control are our own actions.

  13. BDA369 says:

I really hope she recovers from this.

Whether or not she was driving drunk, the solution is quiet simple really to prevent/deter DUI’s from occurring. First, treat DUI’s as a serious criminal offense, with relatively harsh penalties. So change all existing penalties for DUI’s and either double or triple them, and have signs posted in both bars and select parking lots detailing these penalties. Second, catch the criminals.

No one goes around thinking they are invincible, people just know for a fact that in Bermuda there aren’t enough police on the roads to catch them, and so are unlikely to face any consequence for driving drunk. Also, no one ,neither drunk nor sober, drives thinking they will get in an accident, that is just human nature.

So if people knew that the chances of them getting caught were high and the penalties were also very severe, people would gladly pay $50 bucks for a taxi home. Really there is no excuse for driving drunk, but ‘won’t get caught’ and ‘no penalties’ (harsh ones) is a pretty good one.

    • Logic76 says:

Many people do think they’re invincible with an “it won’t happen to me” attitude.

  14. BermyG says:

Very unfortunate incident. I do wish her a full recovery. There are many valid points made above, and also some off-the-wall ones.

Yes, unfortunately, it is often the case that at that spot, at that time of the night, alcohol is involved, however there are still many other possible variations. Perhaps it was raining, and the rain impaired her vision (have you ever ridden a bike in the rain? It is painful on your face and eyes and can be somewhat blinding). Maybe she is supposed to ride with glasses and she wasn’t wearing them. Perhaps she wasn’t coming home from town but instead maybe from a friend’s house either hanging out, or having a ‘rendez-vous’, or babysitting, or maybe she was just tired and falling asleep (that’s happened to many people before when alcohol wasn’t involved – she may have been working til that hour – also been known to happen), or maybe she was on medication that impaired her night vision or something else (these are all very, very possible). All of that to say it is not a good idea to speculate when the facts have not been presented. Instead we should just provide positive thoughts and well wishes for her, her family, and her friends. Can’t imagine how I would be feeling if I was in any of their positions at this time.

  15. honesty says:

I think you are all forgetting about the matter in hand here. This beautiful and wonderful girl was a friend of mine and a girl who was responsible, full of life and happy! Jay I just hope you don’t have to suffer the pain that the family are going through right now but then again if you did you may think twice before publishing things like this especially before knowing the facts. Please stop!!!!!

  16. Graxe22 says:

Despite all your ‘drink driving’ comments, she was not. She lost control in the bad weather, she was flown to Boston and she has severe head injuries and is currently on life support. She is British and her family are in london who are going through an awful time and everybody that knows her, knows what an amzing girl she is and has touched so many lives. We need a miracle for her to pull through this, so please give your prayers for her survival.
