Full Text: Wilson on Migrant Workers Day

December 17, 2010

Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Kim Wilson spoke today [Dec 17] to mark ‘Migrant Workers Day’. Her full statement follows below:

Good afternoon everyone:

It is a pleasure to be here to commemorate International Migrants Day.

Let me start by saying ‘thank you’ to every migrant worker who has come to Bermuda’s shores to contribute positively to the workplace. Our Island could not run efficiently without you.

Whether it’s the grocery store, our favourite restaurant, an international company, or our children’s schools, migrant workers play an extremely vital role in our workforce.

We appreciate your contributions and like your Bermudian counterparts, there are systems in place to ensure fair treatment.

The role of the Department of Labour and Training, under the direction of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, is to promote good industrial relations by providing advisory, conciliation, mediation and arbitration in the prevention of labour disputes for the benefit of all workers.

The Employment Act 2000 is the ‘floor’ of the employment system for both local and migrant workers.

Migrant workers have the right – like their local counterparts – to file an official complaint with the Labour Relations Office in instances of unfair treatment, or where there is an issue in which the employer has failed to comply with the Act, an Inspector will investigate. If there are reasonable grounds to believe that the employer is in violation of the Act, the matter will be effectively addressed.

There are some basic tenants contained within the Act. For instance, after 12 months of employment, all workers are entitled to a minimum standard inclusive of:

* two weeks pay for annual vacation
* eight days per year of sick leave
* two-month paid maternity leave and one month unpaid

Recent focus on the working conditions of migrant workers has highlighted situation right here in Bermuda that are questionable. Today, I implore all employers to revisit the Employment Act 2000 which clearly outlines the basic rights of employees, and to work to ensure they are in compliance. A happy and well treated employee benefits everyone, especially your businesses.

Again, to each and every migrant worker in Bermuda, the Government of Bermuda, on behalf of the People of Bermuda, extend its sincere thanks for your contributions to our Island economy and workplace.

Thank you.

And, since I have your attention, let me take this opportunity I wish each and everyone a safe and blessed holiday season and remember – Shop Local!
