Gun Victim: “It Was A Revenge Attack”

December 8, 2010

A Sandys man shot three times while he was sitting in his car told the Supreme Court he could have been victim of a revenge attack because “word on the street” was he had been involved in another firearms incidents.

Nathan Darrell, 23, was shot in the neck, chest and thigh near Kitchener Close, Sandys on February 13. Accused gunman Quincy Brangman,32, is charged with attempted murder and using a firearm.

Mr. Darrell has told the court he may have been targeted because of either widespread speculation he himself had been involved in an earlier shooting incident involving a cousin of Brangman’s or because he had once threatened to kill a West End gas station owner.

Yesterday the court was briefly cleared so Puisne Judge Mr. Carlise Greaves could hear legal arguments from defence and prosecution lawyers. After the short break the defendant and witness returned and Justice Greaves informed Mr. Darrell that he “does not have to answer a question if that answer will incriminate him.”

Defence lawyer Charles Richardson, cross-examining for the defendant, then asked if Mr. Darrell was familiar with guns. Mr. Darrell replied that he was. Asked further if he knew the difference between a semi-automatic pistol and a revolver, Mr. Darrell replied that he did.

Mr. Darrell said that because of the darkness he couldn’t really see that well. Mr Richardson then referred to the Police Statement that Darrell had given on the afternoon and evening of 14th February this year, while he, Darrell, was receiving medical care in King Edward VII Memorial Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit.

The statement that Mr. Darrell is recorded as making then was: “The barrel of a gun was the first thing I saw….”. In that same statement, Darrell is recorded as saying that the “gun was a chrome-plated revolver with a barrel.” Still describing the action, in his statement, Darrell had said: “I saw down the barrel as it was right up close to me.”

However, still under cross-examination by Mr. Richardson, Mr. Darrell denied having said that, saying: “..Not what I said.”

Still referring to the statement, Mr. Richardson reminded the witness that he had said that: “As soon as I looked at his face, the gun went off” and “Yes, those are the words that I said.”

As Mr. Richardson’s cross-examination wore on and the exchanges between the defence and prosecution attorneys and the witness reached a peak, Justice Greaves cut in saying: “Listen to me. Why everybody want to be boss?”

Following another exchange, the jury were again sent out as the prosecution and defence offered arguments about a course of action that the defence wanted to pursue.

The trial continued, with Mr. Darrell still in the witness box.

Was the Judge shot? The prosecutor? Shot three times…..Revolver/barrel……

You get shot three times……..the accussed is not the gun……………………

  2. Bottom Line says:

I think we need to state the fact that we are in this crime mess because the PLP made the decision some years ago to adopt a Policy of Co-Existence with the Gangs…and this policy has now blown-up in their faces. I think it’s a fair assessment and we need to remind people that this act was one of treachery. They created this mess by looking the other way in the hopes the gangs would simply keep to themselves and also self-police themselves. They, the PLP looked the other way because too many of their supporters were making too much money in the drug trade. This policy of Co-Existence has led to Bermuda becoming a gangstaa paradise.

I just hope one day these so called gangsters wake up and realize that it’s more to life than defending a street corner….Travel the world, meet new people.

It’s sad that these guys believe this is what life is supposed to be like.

To all you crews, gangsters, thugs, whatever you like to be called, wake up!….There is no future in badman business!!….You either end up dead or in jail…paying lawyer fees trying to get you some bail.

    Good Over Evil!….Life Over Death!

  4. NOFX says:

Bottom Line you hit the nail on the head. Too many people in “safe” PLP constituency’s make too much money off the drug trade. The PLP are not going to chance pissing these people off and loseing votes by messing with them. It’s the dirty little secret that black society here won’t admit up to, instead they make references to slavery and assume that every white person in Bermuda is a privileged millionaire who’s repressing them despite 12 years of an all black government.

    • Bottom Line says:

Tru Dat….!! The PLP signed a deal with the devil and now it has blown up in their faces. If anyone thinks this deal-with-the-devil is still a good one, then they need to vote for the PLP, cause they ain’t gonna change things. I guess for the PLP Monarch, governing over a gangstaa paradise trumps all.

So- how bad would it be to submit to martial law for a couple months to do some house cleaning? Would it really be that terrible a temporary sacrifice to get these people off the streets? I don’t know. I do know somehow we need our country back. I want my husband and son to know the Bermuda I love. Right now, our ‘per capita’ statistics are shameful when it comes to shootings. They’re worse than New York City, I think. Someone will want to check me on that. We are too small a country for this. I know there is no one right answer, but where do we start? My American husband fears for our son’s life and future here. These ‘gangstas’ aren’t representative of Bermuda, yet that’s what’s in the press, on the internet, out there for anyone to read. Tourists see it, my American and British family see it, my Caribbean family read it, and when will it get better? The police are damned if they do and damned if they don’t. If they enforce, they’re brutalizing people, if they don’t, they’re lazy. Who the hell in their right mind would WANT that job? Yet we sit on our asses and criticize their every move.
I love my Bermuda. I used to be proud of it. I want to be proud of it again.
