Women’s B League, Swifts B vs Swallows B, Final score: 3-2
This match showcased some of Bermuda’s best young players and it was no surprise that is was a fiercely and evenly contested with both teams gaining 7 penalty corners. Much of the match was a battle of the midfielders between Iman Smith of Swifts and Jennifer Chisnall of Swallows.
In the 3rd minute Swifts’ Iman Smith drove into the Swallows circle but shot wide, Swifts wasted a penalty corner in the 9th minute and then Swallows dominated possession gaining penalty corners in the 12th and 13th minute. In the 15th minute Swifts were unlucky not to have taken the lead when Ryanne Bardgett’s shot hit the post. The Swifts gained another penalty corner in the 23rd minute which Lorina Harvey belted at the goal by the shot was well saved by the Swallows ‘keeper’. The stalemate was finally broken in the 28th minute when Smith received the ball on the halfway line and dribbled through the entire Swallows defense to set up Bardgett for the tap in goal. Less than a minute later the ever dangerous Swallow Jennifer Chisnall took a free hit and went into the Swifts circle unopposed and struck a powerful shot to even the score at 1-1. Swallows gained 2 penalty corners in the 32nd and 33rd minute, but could not find the net. In the last minute of the first half Swifts’ Raven Pearman fired just past the left hand post missing the chance to put Swifts back in front. ‘Keeper’ Julia Thirde displayed a exceptional saves throughout the first half.
Immediately after the break Swifts’ Smith took the ball from the right touchline into the circle and pushed a point blank shot at the Swallows goalkeeper which was saved. In the 44th minute the Swallows’ Kayla Kellman put the Swallows in the lead with a field goal assisted by a pass from Amanda Correia. Three minutes later the Swallows were awarded a penalty corner but the shot on goal was just wide of the post. In the 55th minute Swifts’ Smith scored from a penalty corner with a vicious shot into the bottom right hand corner of the goal over the logged Swallows’ ‘keeper’ to even the scoring at 2-2. Two minutes later Smith again went on a mazy 30 meter dribble and passed to Pearman who quickly passed to Bardgett who smashed the ball at the goal with the ball deflecting off a defenders’ stick and looping into the goal to turn the game on its head with Swifts now leading 3-2. Swallows had one last chance to even the score from a penalty corner in the 68th minute but couldn’t convert. Heather Sinclair, Olivia Moore, Shallan Dennis, Kelli Nusum and Mallory Towlson played excellent in defense.
An excellent game of hockey under the lights on a Friday night between two evenly matched teams.
Bluebirds B vs Cardinals B, Final score: 3-0
This was to be a tough game as Cardinals’ ‘keeper’ Holly Augustus who is quite injured after playing such an awesome game in the previous week is currently having therapy done on her legs showed up to support her team in goal. As Cardinals are currently short of players had to do some reshuffling; their defense of Nelia Spangenberg, Denise Downey, Candy Foggo and Kaywell Outerbridge and left mid Helen Marshall played well together in support of their ‘keeper’, but had their work cut out for them. Bluebirds’ Laura Bardgett opened the scoring from a field goal in the 13th minute when she picked up the rebound from a save by ‘keeper’ Augustus off a shot by Sarah Smith to end the first half 1-0. In the 43rd minute of the second half Bluebirds’ Sarah Smith’s shot on goal was stopped by ‘keeper’ Augustus but the deflection which was unseen at first by both teams was slipped in by a quick footed Maria Harris who managed to pick up the rebound for Bluebirds’ second field goal to increase their lead of 2-0. Cardinals’ Candy Foggo played another week as an awesome deep back and later in the game was moved to mid-field to create some momentum to the forwards as she would be seen carrying the ball through the mid-field and beating Bluebirds’ mid-field and some of their defensive players striking many balls into the circle hoping for a deflection from her teammates on the forward line. Cardinals continued to play hard and with some solo runs by Amori Venter, Adrien Lewis and Nicola Feldman just couldn’t find the goal. A solo run by Laura Bardgett in the 56th minute sealed the deal when she cracked an unstoppable shot into the side of the goal to make the final score 3-0 to Bluebirds. Neither team capitalized on their one short corner shot.
Ravens B vs Longtail Canaries B, Final score: 4-1
Ravens’ Kristina Viera opened scoring in the 18th minute from a field goal, but it was much improved Longtail Canaries who would score a field goal in the 30th minute by Catherine Godet to end the first half with a 1-1 tie. Ravens’ Tracy Stewart would score a field goal in the 39th minute of the second half, and Georgia Harris would finish with 2 more field goals in the 52nd and 62nd minute for the win of 4-1 to Ravens.
Canaries B vs Swifts B, Final score: 1-2
Swifts’ Ryanne Bardgett opened the scoring in the 2nd minute with a reverse stick shot from the top of the circle. Against the run of play a lackluster Swifts’ defense allowed Canaries to pull one back with a neat deflection executed by Kirstie Jones in the 19th minute. In the 29th minute, Bardgett picked up a Canaries 16 yard hit and rounded the Canaries’ goalkeeper to put Swifts back in front. The Swifts wasted 4 penalty corners towards the end of the first half which would have put the game out of reach. The Swifts continued to spurn chances to increase their lead in the second half and nearly paid the penalty at the end of the game when Canaries had chances from 2 successive penalty corners but were unable to convert with Swifts winning the game by the score of 2-1.
