SDO Walk Numbers: 2,000 or 909 People

March 17, 2011

tuckers point sdo walkPaul Telford, the Rooms and Spa Director at Tucker’s Point Hotel & Spa, made a number of points in favour of the SDO, and also touched on the walk held recently saying the “accurate count,” was 909 walkers that showed up and asking “where did 2000 come from?”

On March 6th, a group of environmental and social/historical organisations hosted a walking tour of the Tucker’s Point area that will be affected by the Special Development Order [SDO] which is due to be debated in the Senate tomorrow [Mar.17].

Mr Telford said, “Mr. Hayward quoted to the media that there were 2000+ walkers who toured Tucker’s Point property last Sunday. I was there greeting the walkers on Sunday and an accurate count that was conducted showed that there were 909 walkers. I would consider a large error to be +or-10 people, but seriously, where did 2000 come from?”

Mr Telford also talked about the “demographics of the participants,” saying at “At Sunday’s walk I spoke with one lady who was there to show her opposition to the SDO. Until this day I cannot seem to get over our conversation. She told me that she wanted to see this land saved for her children. I replied that I’d like to be able continue providing for mine.”

“She asked me where I was from. I replied that with the last name Telford, where else would I be from, Somerset of course. I then asked her where she was from. She replied that she was from Canada, well originally Scotland. I’m sure that you’ve heard the comments about the demographics of the participants of Sunday’s walk. I would say that the lady I spoke with in the example above was representative of two thirds of the 909 people who participated in the walk.”

Perhaps she was one of the investors, prospective buyers… One the one hand, you can argue this is an issue only for native Bermudians, and even bring in the “demographic” newspeak for selective worthiness of opinion. Then, when it suits, why not look to outside investmrnt and management skills to ‘rescue’ the argument. The online petition has more signatures than the calendar year. Some signatories are not inclined to reveal their names and views, but none are actually anonymous. This level of expressed concern is very significant in terms of political consequences, ask any political PR firm. The smarter politicians ought to do their own shrewd sums, and break ranks from the flock to save their credibility as a party and as indivuduals.

Xenophobia again. Regardless of what I think about the SDO I am so sick and tired of Bermudians disparaging others who live and work in this country and imply that these people ought not to have any say -or indeed rights- in Bermuda. An environmentalist has a right to express legitimate concerns about the environment. OK, so disagree, fine. But to marginalize because they are of a different nationality is not right. One might ask “And where did the Telfords come from?”, besides Somerset, of course. Without foreigners and foreign capital, Bermuda would be nothing.
I am a Bermudian of several generations -more than most. But unlike many Bermudians I do believe in equality of rights. Bermudians demand it but see no reason why they should extend it. Just one of the reasons why this country is so sadly failing.

i love how he goes to discredit stuart’s number of 2000 (no clue if that is right or not), but then goes to assert that from 1 conversation he pulls out that she somehow represented 2/3 of the group??? where the hell did that number come from?
shoot down one but then pull another out of your a$$?

SDO no SDO it will be done like it or not, Mr Telford seems to forget his employers are,yes foreigners. The demographics matters not, what can be his point. We know the people who will come out and march and protest. We in the black community have nothing but apathy towards most thing pertaining to protestmaters not if we like it or not, it is what it is. This whole “foreinger” thing I don’t buy it, because in reality this country is run by, yes. Check Fairmont Canadians, Elbow Saudis, Tuckers Point Americans and others ? 99% of the international business companies are all foreign owned companies, Government is the largest single employer on the island and where do they generate most of their income from ?? wake up boss, wake up. Like it or not fortunate or unfortunate they yes they pull the strings.
