April 8, 2011

In Magistrates Court this morning [Apr.8], 43-year-old Delvin “Beaver” Stevens was sentenced to two years in prison for stealing $755 worth of phone cards ,and six months in prison for escaping Police custody. Sentences are concurrent.

Yesterday Mr Stevens pleaded guilty to stealing $755 of cell phone cards from the the Esso Collector’s Hill station. He also pleaded guilty to escaping custody.

Yesterday, the Court heard that on March 5th, Mr Stevens was found by Police and they sought to arrest him in relation to the phone card theft.

However, Mr Stevens rode off on a motorbike and eluded the police. He crashed into a wall, got up and was then chased on foot into the area near MAWI and Devon Springs Road where Police caught him.

As Police tried to place Mr Stevens under arrest, a group of men materialized, threatened the situation, and Police backed-off. Mr Stevens escaped. On April 6th Mr Stevens was re-captured in Hamilton.

Mr Stevens was on probation at the time of the incident, having been released in 2009 from a previous stint in prison.

You’ve got to be kidding me right? Police are backing off? Huh?

Yes, when they are outnumbered and their lives are at stake it is not worth it to push the issue. Everyone talks like people out there actually respect the police. The only time they have praise for the police is when they need them. Otherwise it is all criticism on what is a dangerous job – more so in today’s gun climate.

So ya – the police can back off and reserve the right to catch the thief another day…
