Photos & Video: Colour The Sky Festival
The first Colour The Sky festival took place today [June 20] at Fort St. Catherine beach in St George’s from 11:00am to 6:00pm. The event was the brainchild of Tricia Walters, and with assistance from Quinell Francis, Renee Ming and Michelle Wales it was brought to fruition.
Town Crier David Frith kicked off events in the morning with a resounding cry, which was followed by a performance of bagpipes and Scottish style music and highland dancing, which was warmly received by those in attendance.
The highland dancers were followed a display of acrobatic and athletic skill by the members of the Capoiera Camara Brazilian troupe, who used martial arts, chanting and athleticism to wow the crowd.
Nicky Gurrett from Sandtastic showcased a sand sculpture of a woman reposing in the sand, which inspired the children at the beach to make their own sandcastles and their efforts were rewarded with prizes.
Figgles Mascot Company provided mascots free of charge and Dora and Diego, Sponge Bob, a Pirate and Elmo entertained the children by dancing with them. The BELCO bird was also in attendance, and entertained some of the younger attendees.
Kite flyers had fun showing off their skills and delighted the crowds with their skills, while additional entertainment was provided by the Zumba dancers, PCC Majorettes & Drummers and limbo dancer Gigi.
DJ Blacka kept a carnival mood going all day, winding down towards the event with some soulful reggae. Wendell ‘Shine Hayward’ finished off the event with a touching rendition of some known favourites, and the Mayor of St. George’s also has some resounding words about the town of St. George’s.
Street vendors were out and about vending a variety of goods ranging from bouncy castles, snow cones, food, clothing and art work. Blackbeard’s Restaurant opened up especially for the day and appeared to do roaring trade, even providing a special cocktail for the event.
Attendees came by both land and water, as several boats pulled in to the bay throughout the day to enjoy the music, including two large party boats.

Thank you Bernews for covering our event. Dennis rocks!!!! Our day was a magnificent success, despite the gale we had down at the beach. Unfortunately we couldn’t have our kite building workshop, but we’ve moved that to the Art in the Park on August 21st so the kids can still come down and learn how to make a traditional kite.
But THANK YOU. Bernews is the bomb! You guys are amazing and the Colour the Sky Committee LOVES you!
Thanks, was fun. Hope to be back next year…
@Bernews: I heard that a hundred kites were flown at the Colour the Sky event. Any photos of kites to share with us?
The photos we have are posted, however there is a quick video of the kites on the TV section. Sorry to say the quality is not the best as attempting to video high in the sky isn’t easy, so the video is not about to win any awards but we tried lol…
