Lister, Butterfield, Furbert To Be Replaced?

October 31, 2011

On this evening’s [Oct.31] newscast ZBM reported that Ministers Terry Lister and Minister Neletha Butterfield and Senator Laverne Furbert may be replaced in the first shake-up of Premier Paula Cox’s Cabinet and Upper House teams since they were sworn in exactly a year ago tomorrow .

In November, 2010, newly-elected Premier Cox appointed leadership rival Terry Lister as Minister of Transport and Neletha Butterfield as Minister of Government Estates and Information Services. Earlier this month, Minister Butterfield was defeated in a Progressive Labour Party candidate selection primary in her Pembroke constituency by Sen. David Burt.

ZBM’s Gary Moreno reported that Sen. Furbert may possibly be replaced by Anthony Richardson, the PLP’s candidate for tomorrow’s Devonshire South by-election assuming he is defeated by either the One Bermuda Alliance’s Craig Cannonier or Independent hopeful David Sullivan.

During Saturday’s PLP banquet Premier Cox pointed out it was her one-year anniversary in office, saying, “As we look forward — a year has passed. A year gives you the chance to get into a rhythm, a year also allows you to understand your strengths and weaknesses, and also the weaknesses within.”

“And it also gives you a launching pad for taking some risk, and also taking some bold steps. Not everything and not everyone will like it but it will be the benchmark because now a year is under one’s belt and it’s time to move on, and time to also shake it up a bit.”

It has also been suggested that Independent Sen. Dr. Walwyn Hughes will soon be retiring as a Senator after serving 15 years in Bermuda’s Upper House.

When asked by Bernews this afternoon to confirm reports of Dr. Hughes imminent retirement, Governor Sir Richard Gozney said: “I have not as yet made any change to the trio of independent Senators who are nominated to the Senate by the Governor. As and when I make a change I shall announce it immediately.”

The Senate is expected to undergo further shakeups in the near future, with OBA Sen. Craig Cannonier widely tipped as the favourite in the Devonshire by-election and fellow Opposition legislator Dr. Katherine Michelmore planning to move to Australia.

Its amazing how people have this PASSION for change and challenge everything anyone has to say and now YOU are leaving…..Michelmore you are and always will be a joke like the rest of all these today than gone tomorow wannabees….gonna be interesting to see who is going to be around in 5 years when its not at all popular to be a politician anymore or when people who seem to have your best interest at heart but at the same time worry about themselves more…..SMH

If you come into politics make it for the right reasons, you may not see it now but in the end most of these faces will leave you in the lurch…

where were they all this time?

        • Yup says:

What the hell have you ever done? Where have you been all this time?

        • Sean Soares says:

Assuming you are talking about Kathy Michelmore, if so then you’re an idiot. Shes not leaving for greener pastures.

The Premier needs to fire the Finance Minister.

  3. Cancer says:

    Lister gone….
Premier, Burgess, minors, desilva need to follow! Infact the whole team… Cleanup starts tomorrow! CC Premier in waiting!

  4. Survey says:

Really hoping Paula got rid of Lister. He deserves it cos he hasn’t done a lick. If he worked for me he’d have been out on his a** long ago.

    Dead wood.

  5. Rockfish#2 says:

Don’t pop the champagne corks yet, as this has not yet been confirmed!

  6. STEWEY BABCOCK says:

I nominate Minister Butterfield to be Santa this year at the Christmas Parade , Senator Furbert could be The Grinch and Minister Lister could play the Carnival court jester . Oh and Commissioner could play cowboys and indians with Hi Ho Silva .

  8. Mike says:

The grapevine is telling me that Wayne Furbert is taking over from Paula as Finance Minister.

    • Alvin says:

Is the grapevine an official position in our Constitution which we should be relying upon?

  9. Colonel says:

Please don’t tell me the Colonel is going back to the Senate…

    • Alvin says:

Wouldn’t make a great deal of sense. Lt. Col. Burch is now an adopted candidate in 27 and needs to concentrate on canvassing in what is now a marginal constituency. Premier is much more likely to appoint a younger party member to represent the PLP in the Senate – if she is going to make any changes in the Senate that is.

    • Rob says:

Burch needs to be stopped and stopped now, he has done enough damage to this country, people have lost their jobs because of him, now he is out there maniupulating the public again for his own ego.

      • Wondering says:

Perhaps was follwoing orders from Major Browne just as the Premier was and she is trying to wash the cabinet clean. Please don’t include Rolf in your listing of maybe’s…. he and Laverne need to go and stay gone

      • THE HELL!! says:

Remember in politics stupidity is not a handicap.

you can’t expect the plp to afterall, alaska hall has been their hq since the late 19th Century

  14. I guess says:

Bout time, Lister is so full of sh%^ he can’t even hide it!!!! Good move!!!

  15. george says:

how dare you all talk about my hardcore plp uncle’s thoughtful & caring government like that. the shame of your talk

  16. george says:

i wouldn’t be suprise if sister premier’s ministers do a jennifer smith on her if she isn’t careful

  17. Analyst and Voter says:

    Dear Madam Premier,

Great work this will silence your critics, please consider removing the following:

    - Patrice Minors
    - Laverne Furbert
    - Cromwell Shakir
    - Derrick Burgess
    - Michael Scott

They do not do anything, are generally ot leading their Ministries and quite frankly reflect badly on you.

    Thanks
    Voter

    • AMEN says:

Patrice Minors definitely needs to go, didn’t she loose her post to Bascome couple years ago? and lets not be fooled that she won her constituency on the strength of what she is capable of, she won that constituency because die hard PLP members couldn’t fathom the dame’s (Brown-Evans) seat being any other color than green.

Burgess who??? I swear I forget that he is even around..of course that’s the way he likes it, gives him and Chris Furbert more time and room to cook up more strikes and inconvenience the public.

  18. Keep them Honest says:

    More Please!

  19. tricks are for kids.... says:

    Hmmm!

  20. Curious George says:

I’d wait for confirmation on all of this before poppin’ bottles. Today, I’m more concerned about getting in what I can before the import tax hike that takes effect later this week.

  21. Please Leave Please! says:

Things are heating up… @PLP, since pleading for you to Leave Politics hasn’t worked, please set the date so We The People can put you out of your misery, by voting you out…. In 1998 we made history voting you in, now can we make 2011/12 Historic voting you All Out!!!

  22. Bermyman says:

Who will replace them though? Lister has already done alot of damage as it is and who put him in the position of power in the first place?! Just think what we paid him for a years work! Everything Paula seems to be doing is reactionary to bad ideas she and her party had , these ideas were implemented and then revoked. Same with her people, same with payroll tax, same with term limits, same with Browns policdies, same with Burch’s policies the list goes on and on of bad decisions. The goverment does not know what it is doing, but they make the most important decisions in this country right now.

    Take them out!

  23. Malachi says:

Well it has been said that politicians are like diapers. They should be changed often and for the same reason! :)

  24. Triangle Drifter says:

Poor Paula…about now she must be looking across the PLP talent pool & can’t find a single deep spot. During the PLP experiment more Ministers have been churned in & out of positions than any other period in Bermudas history. It has been epic fail at every turn, but they have all qualified for a pension, at our expense, I’ll bet.

So, who will it be during hopefully the final months of the PLP? Anyone in the PLP with experience in the transport industry? Sorry commuting to work or driving a taxi does not count. Real depth of understanding is needed.

Laverne Furburt will not be missed. Her seat is needed for another ‘payback’ possibly future canidate, who needs training in MP kintergarten.

Hopefully Nelethea will be able to get front row seats somewhere else now. She will have time to get there early.

    • navin johson says:

Totally agree….Ms. Minor worked the front desk and she is tourism minister..Roban worked at a bank and he has been minister of everything. Burgess was a bus boy and union head so he would be works and engineering…Ms. Cox is a lawyer that makes her finance minister and on and on…Do they have anyone left who has not been a minister? someone need a pay boost for awhile?

  25. Rossetta says:

T Drift, you seem to have been posting for years with no one listening. My guess is that you are an FBI serial killer profilers dream, educated but unfulfilled middle aged white male, and I’m betting you don’t live in Bermuda anymore and if you do you don’t have the right to vote. Your highlight is to whine about blacks in power from your k p filled laptop. Seeing as your probably a brit, the kp is asian no doubt :-) gotcha didn’t I?

    • Contractor dave says:

This is a really insulted post that has absolutely no bearing on the discussion. Triangle Drifter has as much right to post his/her opinions on this site as anyone else – whether black/white/yellow/pink or green!

PD – I listen to you Triangle, make more sense than most on here mate!

  26. Pastor Syl says:

@ Rosetta: Many of us who post keep requesting that posters stick to the issues and not engage in personal derogatory remarks. They do not add anything positive to the discussion.

  27. THE HELL!! says:

“How fortunate for governments that the people they administer don’t think.”.

  28. jack says:

the plp leader should have the testicular fortitude to step down after all she was the finace minister while all our money was being wasted she was more than just a cog in a wheel .if you don,t know she just fired and humiliated our next finace minister another briliant black man who will be next. so much for working for the good of bermuda

    • Contractor dave says:

Being Finance Minister does not mean you sign every cheque. People need to learn about how Governments work before they attack people.

The Government do need to work for the good of Bermuda, yes, but having the right people in the right positions is the way to achieve this, Premier Cox has given everyone a year to prove themselves but some haven’t shone in the positions they currently hold – doesn’t mean they won’t be back in a different position, although I for one hope not in the case of these three.

      • Terry says:

        Whats yah problem “Contractor”.

        No jobs sent your way?

        • Contractor dave says:

Don’t have a problem Terry, I’ve got plenty of work to be going on with, some private sector and a small government job, that on it’s own wouldn;t pay my mortgage, but I bid for it and won it fair and square.

My point is that some Ministers have no expertise or experience in the field they are working in – e.g. Burgess and Public Works, therefore if they do not rise to the challenge and do a good job they should be replaced, just like I’d sack one of my carpenters if they were no good – but if that carpenter was a brilliant plumber I may just switch his job!

The Premier has made mistakes, yes, but I give credit where it is due. I’ve spoken to the new Procurement person and she is knowledgeable, experienced and passionate about Bda and was directly employed by Premier Cox – speaks volumes to me on how seriously she is taking Governance and Government contracts from this point on.

          No problem!

    • Curious says:

Jack, you are full of it. Premier isn’t going anywhere and she’s doing a damned good Job. All you OBA haters really think that people have the same view as you, they don’t. They understand what is going on, and they are working through the troubles.

The people who are really struggling, are those that HAD excess money before, the struggle among PLP voters is no different now than in 1998. Sooner your realise it the better.

Oh and, sorry, for the VAST Majority of PLP supporters, life in 2011 is better than life in 1998. If yours isn’t i’m sorry.

      • Mad Dawg says:

I guess that “majority of plp supporters” for whom “life is better” now than it was in 1998 doesn’t include the 1,121 registered in July as unemployed? Or the ones that have lost their jobs since July, for example when Citibank left, Willowbank closed, etc?

I’m guessing the ones who are better off now are those who have benefited from no-bid contracts, free GP cars, that sort of thing. Well, good for you.

  29. Noel Ashford says:

Well, I guess the PLP can clean up nicely… some great cuts from senate in particular.. I guess Paula doesn’t “respect authority” either… LOL! Karma is amazing at times ;0 Now for Burch and Rolfe – the other two muskateers of combined Public PLP wisdom and authority on little of use to modern society!

  30. Molly millers says:

Wow she got the boot eh eeh
