Video: Premier’s Speech At PLP Banquet

October 30, 2011

[Updated] The PLP hosted their 44th Annual Conference Banquet last night [Oct.29] at the Fairmont Southampton, and Premier Paula Cox told those in attendance that after a year in office it’s “time to … shake it up a bit.”

Pointing out it was the first anniversary of her election as Party Leader and Premier, Ms Cox said:  ”As we look forward — a year has passed. A year gives you the chance to get into a rhythm, a year also allows you to understand your strengths and weaknesses, and also the weaknesses within.”

“And it also gives you a launching pad for taking some risk, and also taking some bold steps. Not everything and not everyone will like it but it will be the benchmark because now a year is under one’s belt and it’s time to move on, and time to also shake it up a bit.”

The 8-minute video of the Premier’s speech is below:

She went to give out two awards to party officers — the Leader’s Cup Award went to Curtis Williams, the PLP public relations officer; and Owen Darrell, the PLP Party Organiser Owen Darrell. The Leader’s Efficiency Award went Michael Landy, the PLP membership secretary.

The Premier finished her speech indicating that the next General Election would probably take place within the next 12 months, saying, “I don’t think I’m giving away anything when I say this is probably going to be the last banquet before the blessed event.”

And while they have another Paaaarty, Carnival pulls out. Fiddling while Rome burns.

    • True Bermudian says:

Maybe Carnival pulled out because of the fetid global economy.
After the big Conde Naste thing earlier this month I went over to cruisecritic.com and tripadvisor.com to see what people are really saying about their trips to Bermuda.

Tourists do really love this place.

You will be hard pressed to find many negative reviews of Bermuda. And if you do they are few and far between.
If one chooses to point the finger at one bad review in a sea and world of great reviews and say “See? See?!” they are blind to what tourists are actually saying.

Yes our tourists get taken advantage of from time to time by thugs on mopeds etc but show me one place in the world where that doesn’t happen?!
On some of those other Caribbean islands some tourists feel as if they can’t even leave the resort!

      Not in BERMY.

In reality Carnival probably pulled out for economic reasons because the World Markets seem to be collapsing and headed for disaster again.
Plus the world hasn’t even recovered from the 2008 financial fiasco and tickets and sales to everywhere are down all over.

Travel agencies are closing all over North America. Yet Bermuda gets stellar reviews from people who do come here.

Bermuda is in a tough situation that’s bound to get worse but Carnival pulling out is world related. Not Bermy.

      • Mad Dawg says:

All because of worldwide conditions? Not true. Carnival is not decommisssioning the ship. It will use it somewhere else, where its customers are appreciated and actually treated nicely. (i.e. where they will have access to buses, ferries, that kind of thing).

Blaming it on the ‘world economy’ is a cop-out.

        • True Bermudian says:

Of course the ship is sent to other destinations, but those other destinations always get 10 times the business Bermuda gets anyway.
While the global market is tanking businesses are going to put their resources where they can try to ride out the financial storm with as little loss as possible.

All over the world ports of call and plane arrivals are down. Not just Bermuda.

You say left and I say right.
Why not let a reporter or someone contact Carnival to find out their reason for leaving Bermuda…

          • Mad Dawg says:

There you go again, blaming the world economy, and not the buffoons running things here. You said “All over the world ports of call and plane arrivals are down. Not just Bermuda.”. Wrong.

For example, in the 3rd quarter 2011, Carnival’s cruise ship ticket revenues for North America were up 9.1% year-over-year.

Bermuda is doing badly, while the North American cruise ship industry is doing very well.

Trying to hide behind worldwide economic conditions is just wrong.

            • True Bermudian says:

I’m not hiding behind anything – especially world wide economic conditions.
I’m pointing to the fact travel agencies worldwide are closing and travel is down world wide.

Sure the North American cruise ship market is doing better. Maybe it’s closer to home for the travellers and maybe cheaper to go to Halifax or Alaska or Mexico.

My point is the reviews I read on cruisecritic.com and tripadvisor.com were for the most part all very positive with regards to Bermuda.

              • Mad Dawg says:

By ‘North American’ market they include all cruises from North America, including cruises to the Carribean and to here.

The point is that the cruise market is growing, not shrinking. Other destinations are doing well. We are not…despite the geographical advantage we have (we are close to NY), we are losing out to other destinations.

Carnival Crise Lines are not experiencing this ‘worldwide travel is down’ thing that you’re talking about. We are in a cruise market that should be growing. But we’re shrinking.

You say that “Carnival pulled out for economic reasons because the World Markets seem to be collapsing and headed for disaster again.” Where do you get this idea? It’s nonsense.

Carnival pulled out so that it can use the ships to take its customers somewhere else.
