Update #3: A press release from the PLP follows in full below:

The Progressive Labour Party today named H. Anthony Richardson as their candidate for the upcoming bye-election in Devonshire South Central. Anthony, a Chartered Accountant, was introduced by Premier and Party Leader the Hon. Paula A. Cox, JP, MP at a press conference at Alaska Hall, supported by family, friends, Ministers, Members of Parliament and general members of the governing party.

Anthony, a first time candidate for political office, is a life member of the PLP and has served as Treasurer for the PLP since October 29, 2010. He has a sterling history of public service and a commitment to his community.

In his words, “Service to mankind is the ultimate calling for each of us. I believe we are truly our brother’s keeper and that we will only achieve sustained success by working together and supporting one another. In a political context, service to the community from elected office is a humbling opportunity that should not be taken lightly. I therefore pledge my commitment to the Bermuda public to do my utmost best to serve everyone without fear or favour if elected.”

Anthony points to his appointments as Accountant General of Bermuda, Vice President at Bank of Bermuda and CEO of the Bermuda Health Council as the highlights of his professional career. He also served as a lecturer at Bermuda College and a Police Officer, being awarded the Baton of Honor from his recruit class.

Anthony currently serves in the community as Chairman of the Bermuda Parents, Teachers, Students Association, a member of the Price Control Commission and a guest presenter on the Hope and Good Cheer radio broadcast.

His previous leadership roles include Chairman of the Bermuda Hospitals Board and the Bermuda Educators Council and serving on the Hospital Insurance Commission, YouthNet, Bermuda Football Association and the Golf Course Trustees of Bermuda.

Premier Cox adds, “I am pleased to support the candidacy of Mr. Anthony Richardson as the PLP Candidate for Constituency 12. He is a young man with a passion to make a difference in his community. I encourage the voters of Constituency 12 to elect Anthony Richardson as your advocate in the Government- a credible choice to represent Constituency 12.”

The Progressive Labour Party believes that voters deserve a choice in Devonshire South Central. In this regard, Anthony and the PLP Team will endeavor to meet with all constituents of this area to identify their needs and concerns. He plans to earn the trust of the people of Constituency 12 and hopes to be rewarded with a bye-election victory on November 1, 2011.

Anthony credits his success to a supportive family. He is married to Holly and has 2 children – Jordyn (9) and Kallan (5).

    • Black Soil says:

He’s a nice enough guy. But he represents a govt which does not stand for change and hope for a better day.

  2. Triangle Drifter says:

So…who is he? What has he done? What does he do outside of political aspirations? As usual the press did not ask any pressing questions so all we got was regurgitated Cogwash.

  4. GoodIntentions says:

great choice PLP! a qualified new face to add to the team.
Hopefully Constituency 12 will return the best person…and not simply vote along party lines.

  5. Follower says:

He is a follower who has risen from obscurity in less than a year after having no interest in the PLP before now and like many before him he will be discarded when his usefulness is complete

luckily he will no longer be in any of the branch primaries as he had been trying to get selected many constituencies

another opportunist who brings the message of peace love and christianity before sacrificing people to get ahead

bottom line she trusts him…………..for now

    • GoodIntentions says:

Mr Richardson has been a PLP life member for over 20 years…that doesn’t quite equate to ‘having no interest’ in the PLP now does it?

  6. Vote for Me says:

Well done Anthony. It is good to see that young professionals are prepared to ‘lead from the front’. The fact that you have agreed to stand shows that you have faith in the PLP. I trust that you are able to work with the ‘powers that be’ to make the necessary changes to ensure a PLP victory at the next election.

Also good to see a Warwick Academy alumnus enter politics.

  7. PLPMember says:

why wasnt Jonathan Smith sent to 12?

dem dere devonshire people aint gonna talk to this gentleman let alone give him a glass of rain water

  8. Former Chairman of the Hosp. Board & Bda. Health Council. He came up with massive new Hosp. in Botanical Gardens having wasted huge amount of money with foreign consultants. Drinks green Koolaid for lunch methinks…

  9. Powwer says:

    OBA – 600 Votes

    PLP – :-) Votes

    Mr. Richardson,
Wither thou goest? Ask your leader to give you Laverne’s Senator position for loyal service oh and go and be friendly with Laverne she will help you canvass in C # 12, she is highly regarded there

  10. FrankTalk says:

How can c12 be a safe seat of the OBA has never contested it?

Did we just get a preview of the PLP strategy that OBA = UBP?

    Its that all they got?

    • Ha says:

FrankTalk it isn’t the PLP that called this the safe seat. If you have been paying attention, the OBA are the ones that called it a safe seat by deciding to ‘hand it over’ to Mr. Cannonier from Mr. Barritt.

      • FrankTalk says:

        Sorry HA,

Mr. Richards called it a safe seat in his remarks. Mr Barritt has stepped down because there is no legislative role for him in the OBA – at present – and the OBA has selected Mr Cannonier to run in the vacated seat.

Please direct us to the date, time and location where the OBA has called c12 a safe seat.

The PLP (Mr Richards) did it today, this morning at Alaska Hall.

Perhaps he meant to say that the PLP needs to put in a huge effort to win a seat its never won.

No doubt the boundary changes might help…

        Ha ha ha

        • Vote for Me says:

          @ Frank Talk
The characterisation of C12 as a safe seat for the UBP is evident from the electoral results of C12. Mr. Barritt has comfortably held the seat during his 18 year tenure as a UBP politician. He has not contested the seat as an OBA politician!

It is a fact that Mr. Barritt agreed to assume the OBA leadership on an interim basis until a permanent leader was chosen.

It is a fact that Barritt stated that he would resign his seat in the event the new OBA leader was not an MP, since the Party Leader must be an MP in order to become the Leader of the Opposition. To be clear, if Cannonier is not elected on November 1, he will be the leader of the OBA but not qualfied to be appointed by the Govenor as the leader of the Opposition.

Such a result would place the OBA in a dilemma. Do they elect a new leader that is an MP or do they simply have one person as party leader and another as Opposition Leader – making OBA a ’2 headed monster’ for sure.

Thus we have a situation where Barritt has resigned his seat to ensure the OBA would not have a political embarassment which would likely lead to the political demise of the OBA. In effect the future of the Leader of the Opposition rests squarely on the outcome of the C12 results.

Given these facts, it is logical to conclude that Mr. Barritt (if not the entire OBA) believes that the prior electoral ‘practices’ of C12 voters (i.e. UBP safe seat) will result in a victory for the OBA. The logic of this conclusion is enhanced by the fact that Barritt agreed to resign before the new leader was chosen!!

If the electorate is honest, these facts related to the OBA make it very difficult for the OBA to distance itself from the UBP. The most interesting outcome for the voters in C12 will arise if the UBP run a candidate in the bye election. Remember that the results of the Warwick bye election forced a reconciliation of the ‘UBP diehards” and the ‘UBP rebels’ to form the OBA.

          • LOL (original) says:

So the real problem with the opposition for you and other PLP supporters is that it is supported by a lot of white people. Tells me a lot now it the supporters were all black what would your problems be. After all most if not all the ideas in the UBP’s 2007 election platform where adopted by the PLP accept the long term Residency issue and term limits. What separated the two parties for you? Please don’t say one is labor and one is capitalist as these are only the roots of what that once where as both seem to favor capitalism now.

LOL or are you and the plp saying that white how are Bermudian should give up their right to voice their opinion via the vote or on politics in general here as whites have “had their turn”……… say what you really feel

            • Vote for Me says:

@ LOL (original) – please reread and post this comment again. I genuinely want to comment but some of what you wrote is unclear.

Reference whites and blacks – no problem for me. We need to engage each other based on where we are and have a more respectful discussion.

For C12, the voters can really cause a problem for the PLP by voting for Mr. Richardson. Realistically, if he won, the PLP would have to find some means of getting him in a Ministerial role to properly reflect the confidence shown in him by the C12 voters.

I will provide a more complete answer once you clarify your original post.

  12. Hosp. Board Chairman under Alex Scott who came up with grand scheme to build a multi-billion $ new Hospital in Botanical Gardenss without consulting anyone having spent huge $’s with foreign consultants. Just the sort of politician we don’t need at a time like this.

  13. Winnie says:

If you must vote don’t vote for party, don’t vote for colour vote for your children’s future, who you think is the best one to lead this country forward and creat a more secure and brighter future for our children ????

  14. Honestly says:

The OBA is just another name for the UBP! Look @ the members…how many are from the UBP? What has the UBP done you lately? Be for real!

  15. Lets work Together says:

I am very excited to see Anthony standing in this election. He is a genuine man who stands on his principals. He goes to bat for Bermuda often and truly has our best interest at heart. As always the OBA’s people have taken the chance to degrade him already. You won’t get anywhere like that. I suggest you promote your candidate and leader and spend less time trying to shot down a man that is out of your range.

Stand tall Anthony and stay true to yourself. I am sure you are a worker for the people. Ignore the negative people as they are only attempting to distract you.

    • The Messenger says:

How do you know it’s the OBA’s people that are degrading him? Remember, your own fleas bite you the hardest.

  16. Triangle Drifter says:

Still waiting to see a resume on this guy. Does he have a job? Self employed? That would be a plus. On the Government payroll already? Don’t knock on my door. If he does, that would be a first for a PLP candidate in #12.

  17. Ha says:

it is funny how not even 6 hours after the announcement the haters are out. well, funny isn’t the word, sad is the word.

  18. Voice of Summer says:

Picking up from Bob Richards’ reference to Craig being a great ‘batsman’ in cricket, but a colt, and having to pay his dues before becoming captain. I don’t know about ya’ll, but Craig is about to slap this guy for a ‘six’. OBA.

  19. Singer says:

    Good work Anthony,

You are a good guy and although you will not win in C#12 you have shown your loyalty and will be put in the Senate when we win the next General Election

you took some ideas listened attentively gained the leaders trust in record time and have positioned yourself well

if only more of our young black males were as astutue and progressive as you

you had a plan and put it in motion…….. many just talk but you got it done mate

so good job and do not be disheartened by the negativity that many will bring now that you have won the Premiers trust and the support of her Parliamentary colleagues

  20. blessed says:

as Elder Maria says ‘blessings abound’!

well done Anthony as from the many hopefuls you were selected wishing you all the best and do not give up as many will try to break your spirit

  21. Tireless says:

Unlike many of his colleagues who said they wanted to work for the Party Anthony has worked tirelessly in the community and within the PLP to raise awareness on various issues and assist people in being informed.

He is an example of the new young members who are committed to Bermuda and the Party he and his fellow young members who attended the press conference today are an example of the positive change that is sweeping the ranks of the PLP as we reset the dial under Premier Cox and usher in a new paradigm of governance

He and those present today demonstrate their committment to the Party unlike others who simply complain without getting involved in the new message

    • LOL (original) says:

As stated above he’s been in the party for 20 years how does this make him knew or young so he’s been in the party since what age? Oh and to mention if he does get elected will he resign from Port royal’s PTA as treasurer as this might be a conflict of interest?

      LOL

  22. specialgirl4 says:

“What a Great Candidate and Person”

Anthony, I am so ‘excited’ to see you standing in this bye-election. You are a man of good standard and morals. You have being involved with the Party for several years, providing service to the people. I wish you all the best and pray that God will continue to bless you.

The PLP have excellent choice of good young gifted persons, who standing up to serve and move the party on. I look forward to these individuals taking over the ranks and providing service to their country.

  23. Anyone says:

Congrats Anthony. I pray all the best for you. Maybe you could become Premier. It would be the best thing since Sir John. W. Swan. I’m jealous you’re not running in my constituency, you would have my vote for sure.

  24. Fred Binns says:

Wow… wa got some seriously bitter Bermudians roun here bie! When livin in Bermy is still sweet. God continues to bless us. Ask for wisdom when making important decisions.
Let me paste and copy from another article response:

It’d be great if we could have a referendum to turn the whole political system upside down as the majority of people I’ve spoken with are fed up with party politics. The Westminster system is not for us! 15 years ago, many were tired of the UBP and consequently voted for the “other guy”… now they’re tired of him and seem to want to vote for the new old “other guy” on the block. It’d be great if we had all independent people running that way people would vote for the person they honestly thought was best for the job, rather than because of their allegiance.

It’s amazing to me how people’s perception and the propoganda spread regarding the PLP have already eliminated a very good canidate from consideration. I would submit that despite the tough economical time the world is facing that the current government has done a relatively good job in maintaining a high standard of living, productivity and yes, even integrity throughout. Especially considering the plethora of problems that were inherited. Crime doesn’t go up nor tourism down overnight. Anyone that really cares to check the record would see that since becoming the government the PLP has implemented many things to help nip some issues in the bud and uproot some bad weeds we’ve had for decades. Also planting new iniatives to help us bloom. Doubt it… genuinely seek and you will find.

Bottomline.. in my view, Bermudians are amongst the best complainers in the world. We love to complain in the background while doing nothing ourselves. I applaud all politicians for “doing” for their country and will select the one I feel is the best to “do” the job. Not someone who is great at talking about it… but being about it

    • LOL (original) says:

I disagree crime sky rocketed around the time that group in the hill murder got off..RIP

LOL not saying that it the Governments fualt but just to show a time line

  25. somebody's momma says:

Young talented Bermudian puts his name forward to work in his community. As I read the hateful comments, I wonder why we think that only the people running around with guns and bullets are destroying our society. Anthony there are many of us who appreciate what you are doing and will continue to do.

It would be nice if the UBP ran a candidate, we would really see how confident the OBA crew will be.

  26. Triangle Drifter says:

As a C12 voter I am still waiting to hear who he is? What has he done? Is he an executive with a successful record? Does he have a criminal record of any kind? Traffic offences don’t count.

The only thing I have read so far is that he was involved with the plan, at huge expense, to build the new hospital on Botanical Gardens property. Obviously not the brightest idea.

Being “a nice guy” & “loyal to the Party” does not count for much to get my vote. I want somebody with integrity & an indepentent thinker not somebody who asks “How high?” when the party leaders says “Jump!”

    • Vote for Me says:

      @ Triangle Drifter
Are you really a registered voter in C12? If yes, what criteria will you use to evaluate which candidate to vote for? Remember that the OBA have assumed that the voters in C12 will automatically vote for the OBA candidate. This is evident from the fact that MP Barritt agreed from the outset to vacate his seat to ensure that if a non elected person was chosen as OBA leader, they would have a seat in the House of Assembly as required by the Bermuda Constitution. Any other conclusion about his decision will not be logical.

I also note you are asking for Anthony’s resume. Have you seen one from Cannonier? From what we have heard so far, Anthony has been a qualified accountant for 20 years, was Accountant General, VP at Bank of Bermuda and CEO at the Bermuda Health Council.

Why do ask you about a criminal record? Have you asked the same about Cannonier?

      • specialgirl4 says:

Well put “Vote For ME”, I believe that “Triangle Drifter”is a dead dreamer who hates to give credit where it is due. MR. Richardson actually is more qualifield and intelligent than Craig. But because UBP/OBA vote on party lines, he is more likely to succeed. Well done MR. Richardson.

        • LOL (original) says:

And watch after the by election you and vote will be dissing C#12 for being racist if he does not win. It will be your justification wouldn’t it. Yes I have dismissed what you’ve said in the same way you’ve dismissed Triangle

          LOL

  27. LMAO says:

Triangle Drifter: to date he has surely done more in the community that your cannioner candidate. Facts are Facts man!

  28. Pollster says:

This guy just comes around gets CFO job at BLDC and this is the price of him selling his beliefs.

    PLP politics at its best.

  29. Amazed says:

And after all of the bantum above…..may the best man win!

  30. Mr. Richardson appears to have a great resume: Police officer, Accountant General, Chairman of Hosp. Board, Ex. Dir. Bda. Health Council, VP HSBC, but I did not see any fire and passion for positive change in Bermuda in his speech & reaching out to the Portuguese community of Devonshire SC was really a cheap political shot. Desperate people quite often do desperate things in desperate times. To me Craig Cannonier appears to be really passionate about making positive change in our Island and so I would vote for him at this point, but let’s see how the campaign goes & let the best man win..

  31. Bermudian says:

Why would he need passion? He and Cog will take the general election by a landslide remember, she’s “In Charge”, doing so well, loved by all and has a table at Ascots, PLP dont need passion………they simply need to make us eat cake.

  32. Cordell W. Riley says:

“There has crept in our society and our public dialogue, a coarseness, a nastiness, an attack of people who don’t share the same views as you do,” he said. “All sorts of nastiness. And it is not just politicians who are doing this to each other, and, frankly, politics has always been a contact sport in this country, but with all of the cable channels and talk radio and blogs, especially blogs, where people can be anonymous with their nastiness, I think has caused a level of coarseness in our society that we’ve all got to think about.”
