Charged: Cannabis By Nursery School

November 22, 2011

49-year-old Devonshire parish resident Winston York this morning pleaded not guilty to three charges involving the possession and cultivation of cannabis.

Mr York told Senior Magistrate Archie Warner that he was not guilty of the charge of possessing the illegal drug cannabis with intent to supply; not guilty of the charge of cultivation of the plant cannabis; and not guilty of the charge of possession of vacuum sealing equipment that was intended for use with an illegal drug.

All three charges were laid as having taken place in an Increased Penalty Zone because they are alleged to have happened within 300 metres of the New Hope nursery school for pre-schoolers.

Magistrate Warner set trial for 28th February 2012. York, who was represented by lawyer Charles Richardson, was granted $15,000 bail with one Surety.

    Bermuda is ridiculous, such a small place EVERYWHERE is an increased penalty zone!

    • Ride says:

      @will

      I think that is a good thing as it should provide an increased deterrent to engaging in this sort of illegal activity. It is not yet decriminalised (hopefully it will be soon) so until it is the law is the law.

        “Unjust laws exist; shall we be content to obey them, or shall we endeavor to amend them, and obey them until we have succeeded, or shall we transgress them at once? Men generally, under such a government as this, think that they ought to wait until they have persuaded the majority to alter them. They think that, if they should resist, the remedy would be worse than the evil. But it is the fault of the government itself that the remedy is worse than the evil. It makes it worse. Why is it not more apt to anticipate and provide for reform? Why does it not cherish its wise minority? Why does it cry and resist before it is hurt? Why does it not encourage its citizens to be on the alert to point out its faults, and do better than it would have them?”
