Celebrities Arrive In Bermuda For Gala

January 14, 2012

The stars came out at L.F. Wade International Airport last night [Jan. 13] when celebrities including Danny Glover, Star Jones and Lance Gross arrived in Bermuda to take part in the Syncairly Yours Foundation Gala at Newstead.

The “Diamonds & Caviar Event” is a $1,000-a-plate event to raise money and awareness for the Foundation, a charity that assists uninsured mothers and families who are impacted by premature childbirth.

Also among the passel of stars arriving here last night was Vanessa Bell Calloway, the American actress who has appeared in such major Hollywood productions as “What’s Love Got To Do With It”, “Daylight”, “The Inkwell”, “Coming to America”, “Crimson Tide”, “The Brothers” and “Cheaper By The Dozen.”

Lawyer, journalist, writer, and television personality, Star Jones is best known for her role as a co-host of the ABC weekday morning talk show “The View”. She was also one of the contestants taking part in the fourth installment of “Celebrity Apprentice”, coming in fifth place.

Ms Jones has previously visited Bermuda, most recently last year when she attended the Premier’s Farewell Gala held in honour of the island’s outgoing leader Dr Ewart Brown.

Social activist, actor and producer Danny Glover has a long list of film credits including “The Color Purple”, “Predator 2″, “Witness”, “Angels in the Outfield”, the “Lethal Weapon” films with Mel Gibson and many more.

Mr. Glover is also a repeat visitor to Bermuda and narrated a documentary on the island’s African Diaspora Heritage Trail.

Teen singing sensation Aaron Fresh also arrived on the island last night, and this morning tweeted “Chillen in Bermuda! This place is banging!” to his 100,000 followers.

The chart-topping Def Jam recording artist — whose music is fusion of American and West Indian influences — is due to make an appearance at Chewstick’s open-mic youth session this evening.

This afternoon the Foundation will host a “Public Gathering and Bermuda Style Pink Carpet Walk” at City Hall today [Jan.14] from 2pm – 4pm. The event is sponsored by The Bermuda Department of Tourism and Spanish Town Entertainment.

“Take advantage of this rare opportunity to meet all of the Celebrities who have come to Bermuda in support of the new charitable foundation formed to assist uninsured mothers who experience premature birth,” said a spokesman.

On the left below is Edwin Avent, president “Heart & Soul Magazine” and is Lance Gross who plays Calvin Payne in the sitcom “Tyler Perry’s House of Payne” and who has appeared in other Tyler Perry productions such as the “Meet The Browns” film.

Tickets for the gala are still available and can be purchased at bdatix.com.

  1. Ryan says:

This is great publicity. Just go easy on the picture-taking, though, Bernews (and other news sources!)—we don’t want to lose our reputation of being a paparazzi-free destination that respects the privacy of celebrities.

    • Terry says:

Their comming for a “gala” Ryan…………………………….

Jingus…….get real. Just think, they are part of the first 200 people to visit Bermuda this year……..

      Ching!!!!!!!!

    • Bernews says:

We only attend the airport when asked. The media was specifically *invited* and asked to take photos, they want the publicity for the event.

      • PEPPER says:

Bernews, can you find out why the venue of this event was changed from Cambridge beaches to Newstead ? there is a story here that needs to be investigated….

  2. Reginald Vel Johnson Fan From WAY Back says:

Danny glover is mug, but safe at the same time…can ne1 explain that?

  3. Bernews Editor says:

Vanessa Bell Calloway8* not Galloway (thats a Bermudian Orthodontist)

  4. James Goodfellow says:

Great publicity – a bunch of D listers and friends of Bermuda’s shamed Dr. Brown to boot.

    • PEPPER says:

Danny Glover, supports the regime of Castro, and Chavez !!!!

  5. Wintersun says:

Congrats to all who organized this wonderful and important event despite those of us who just choose to speak negative of who was invited to come, who they may/may not be connected to – whatever jealous people. Remember the real purpose of this event was to raise funds for an important foundation.

If you don’t like the who, what, when, why, then do something positive yourselves, or, as it states on a t-shirt
“If You Have Something to Say, Raise Your Hand and Put it Over Your Mouth!”…none of us want to hear/read it.

Again, bless all of you who have come together for such an important cause, and to our overseas celebrities, you are “A-list” to us here in Bermuda, welcome to our Beautiful Island, you are all welcomed back anytime.

Also, AJ our Gombey mascot represents Bermuda well, please use him more during tourist promotions-cruise/tourist season is near!

Rock on Bermuda! – continue to be proud of your Country Bermudians!!!

Great job Bernews for the pictures, and Syncairly Yours, you will prosper in your endeavors.

    • Bermudians jus Talk says:

Somebody always gotta get Excited,F$%k them Celebs. Lmao !!!

  6. Joe says:

    Did they raise any money?

    • PEPPER says:

I am wondering is this a registered charity ? I have never heard of ” uninsured mothers of premature child birth ” am I missing something here >

      • Can't Take It Anymore says:

Yup, your missing a lot! The registered Charity is Syncairily Yours Foundation. Get hip.

        • Legal Reasons? says:

I have been looking for their Registered Charity number but can’t find it. Do you know what it is? RC###

      • Stamp Out Pepper says:

Well to all those that have negativity to say ……….open your mind and get out there and organise and event, register to be a charity. Put yourself in the limelight so that others may follow in your foot steps, instead of coming on this forum and bad mouthing the people. These people pledged time to this event and maybe one day the service that they are so passionate about might help you or a family member.

So stop the hating and start celebrating the trail blazers and pioneers of the community.

  7. sharky says:

Other than Glover they are all “unknown” to me and took advantage of a nice little junket and a free meal.
Who cares….the country is going down the drain

    • PEPPER says:

Star Jones … was she that real over weight talk sho host that got fired ? and who the hell Lance Gross ?

    • Triangle Drifter says:

Not that I am a Hollywood or movie follower either but besides Danny Glover, who has not been seen much lately I don’t think, I am going WHO??? about the rest of them as well.

  8. Been There says:

The whole event seemed wrong. Diamonds & Caviar in this economy? How about a truly sincere fundraising effort instead.

  9. kerry says:

If they actually raised any funds, where exactly is the money going? What are they doing with it?

Maybe that’s why there were barely any “celebrities” there. Maybe this group needs to be more clear about that and they might get more support.

    • PEPPER says:

This reminds me of all the money that was raised for Haiti..and to this day where did the money that was raised to help these poor people end up ?

    • Been There says:

Would really like to see the media follow up on this!!

  10. VJ says:

I, too, am wondering if this is indeed a registered charity as I have been unable to find a listing anywhere. I went to their initial presentation (where funds were raised) and when I asked questions was giving very vague answers. I hope the money is really going where it is supposed to be….
