Nahki Wells Happy To Be Role Model
Bradford City striker Nahki Wells says he is happy to be role model if that helps to develop Bermuda football.
In a lengthy profile of the 21-year-old Bermudian striker in West Yorkshire’s “The Telegraph & Argus” newspaper, reporter Simon Parker says the Bradford City players is already being celebrated as a football ambassador for Bermuda.
Sports Minister Glenn Blakeney told the newspaper the UK Division Two player is an ideal role model for a coming generation of football hopefuls who want to pursue football internationally.
He said: “Nahki is someone young players can emulate in every aspect of their game and general deportment on and off the field. He is one of Bermuda’s most promising players, with an exceptionally bright future.”
“The Telegraph & Argus” said while Mr. Wells accepts the adulation modestly, he is “fiercely patriotic towards the Bermudian cause.”
“I look up to the likes of Shaun Goater and Kyle Lightbourne, who made it in England, and use their careers as an example to ignite mine,” Mr. Wells told the newspaper.
“There are a lot of hungry, younger Bermudians who have seen me come over here. It’s all about the timing and the right move.
“People are always contacting me to see how things are going. They are behind me and hopeful that my career blossoms.
“I suppose I am considered as a role model but I’m just trying to do the best for myself, my family and my country.”
Mr. Wells played with First Division team Carlisle United for most of the 2011 season and signed a one-year contract with Bradford City in July.
He made his debut for Bradford on the opening day of the 2011-2012 season, coming on as a 74th minute substitute. He scored his first goal for the team in a 4-2 win against Barnet. His second goal of the season came with an impressive 30-yard strike against Rochdale in the FA Cup on November 12 [shown below].
He followed this up with goals in back to back league wins against Crewe and Shrewsbury. He scored his first goal of 2012 in an FA Cup match against Watford.
