$10 Million Drugs: Roberts Sentenced To 20 Years

June 21, 2012

[Updated] 47-year-old Victor Roberts was sentenced to 20 years in prison today [June 21] after pleading guilty to charges involving $10 million dollars worth of drugs and 200 bullets.

Mr Roberts arrest last year came after authorities intercepted the drugs, replacing them with a dummy package, then allowed Mr Roberts to pick them up, eventually arresting him while he was in the process of opening up the hidden compartment to retrieve the drugs.

Justice Charles-Etta Simmons handed down a sentence of a total of 20 years; 18 years for the drugs and two years on both ammunition charges. Both two year sentences for the ammunition are to run concurrently with each other, however are consecutive to the drugs sentence resulting in a total sentence of 20 years.

Mr Roberts entering Court this morning:

Prosecutor Susan Mulligan had recommended a total sentence of 22 years; 18 for the drug charge and 4 years for the ammunition charge.

Defence lawyer Marc Pettingill asked for mercy saying that Mr Roberts’ mother died when he was very young, and his father committed suicide when he was eleven. He went on to say that Mr Roberts left school and went to work early, and now has five children aged from 10 to 22.

Mr Roberts apologized for his actions saying, “I’d like to say that I’m sorry to the Courts, Bermuda, my kids. This won’t happen again. It was a very stupid, stupid move.”

In a statement issued right after the seizure, the police said there were 114 kilos of cannabis [251lbs], 1.5 kilos of heroin [3.3lbs], 1 kilo of cocaine [2.2lbs], 50 grams of hash, and four boxes of live ammunition [200 rounds] confiscated, with the drugs having an estimated in excess of $10 million.

The seizure took place during July 2011 at the Warwick location pictured below:

Mr Roberts had traveled to the USA, and arranged for the drugs to be hidden in a false bottom of an industrial compressor in a container to be shipped to Bermuda. The authorities intercepted the drugs and replaced them with “dummy packages” and placed Mr Roberts under surveillance.

The Court heard Mr Roberts was literally in the act of cutting the drugs out when the police swooped in and arrested him last year.

  2. mixitup says:

You lost your mother and father at a young age? So you have 200 rounds of ammunition that would probably cause another younster to lose their mother or father at a young age…yea it all makes sense

Anyone who knows Blumber knows he doesn’t have the wherewithall , financially or intellectually to be the kingpin , big man , whatever, in having all this stuff in his possession.

I’m willing to guess that with the way thngs work here this will be considered an ‘open and shut case’ by the police and we’ll never hear another peep about it.
Anywhere else though , there would have been some very serious questioning and intelligence going on and other big things would soon be happening down the road.

Call me cynical , but I’ll be very surprised if any more ever comes of this case.

You can be assured that it was a ‘plea’ job.
Be assured that he provided names, dates ,places, et al.
It takes time and you can be assured that is why things are quiet.
Peoples asses are twitching and even the hired hands know that their time is limited.
One mans word doth not a case make.
But one mans word and evidence can lead to “Case-Mates”.

He will be eligable for parole.

Twenty years? Good enough. Now lets work on frying some fish.

      • Malachi says:

Provided names etc??? And gets twenty years??

        ..I don’t think so!!

        • terry says:

          Yes Malachi, yes.
The amount of drugs and ammo speak for themselves.
Possession and importation can…never mind.Reality. Don’t judge all sentences by their cover.

        • registered says:

I don’t think so either. I’d also be surprised if any more ever comes of this case.

          • Bda Nanny says:

he was probably too afraid to come out, so he pleaded…..thats alot of drugs to account to the main person….yes he will be out in 7 yrs….

    • Iwantthetruth says:

To the contrary! Anyone who knows Blumber knows he does have the wherewithall , financially or intellectually to be the kingpin , big man , whatever, in having all this stuff in his possession.
He plead guilty to the case! So don’t hold your breath waiting for more to come of this case cynical moron!!

      • oh yeah says:

I also happen to want to see more and judging by follow up remarks , wanting to see more , has a bit of support so be careful who you call a moron , moron.

Does the house that the accused lived in even barely resemble the palaces owned by a certain individual who was convicted a few months back where the case hinged on a purported closet gambling business ? No way in h**l !
The mr bigs are still out there and living large and it’s about time people realised that good money doesn’t soil itself with bad money . so get over it .

    • george says:

@waiting for more, the reason why he may have just gotten 20 years is because he pleaded guilty & gave the police his complete cooperation

  7. Organized Crime!! says:

Can someone clear this up for me. I thought it was 10YRS for a single bullet, this dude had 200 rounds!!

    LEGAL SYSTEM A BIG JOKE!

Maybe I should get into organized crime. I’m tired working nine to five. Cuz I know I’ll have an education and a job when I come out.

Some of these ex-imates got it better than US. :(

    • Iwantthetruth says:

Maybe you should get into organized crime! I have no job from nine to five! At least you have a 9-5 job, I would gladly take your current job when your crime organization opens up for business!!

      • Tommy Chong says:

The job better not be on a cash register because that may become a dangerous job type after criminals get smart to the lenient sentencing for gun & ammo possession. As long as they don’t kill anyone they’d probably only get about 10 years max for armed robbery as long as they don’t have any drugs on them when arrested. I think that is the point the poster you commented on is making in sarcasm not in serious.

    • Tommy Chong says:

FOR REAL! This guys getting more years for drugs which are willing taken by users than bullets which even a hardcore addict doesn’t want sent their way. These type of sentences just show those in criminal lifestyles that its better to be convicted of a gun crime then a drug crime. Now no one has to wonder why people might rather robbing someone at gunpoint here than sitting on the corner selling drugs. Drug dealing may still be more profitable but there’s more risk in it than using a gun to get money.

BRAVO Bermuda justice system! You judges really know how to deter people from using guns.

    • Amazed says:

You are partly correct. You can get that long but it is not automatic.

  8. Dude says:

It doesn’t take brains to import drugs… it takes gumption at best…

All this talk of criminal masterminds etc is silly… some importers are smart and some are dumb… Some are well connected and some are soloist…

Overall you have successefull importers until they turn into convicted importers…

Heck, with the price of drugs in Bermuda it will never end… You don’t even need a special conection overseas, you can buy retail from whomever you bump into that has what you want… and you’ll get the usual discount for buying volume if you buy enough…

In fact… if you stopped every single resident dealer in Bermuda from importing over night… you know what would happen…? You will end up with more non-residents using whatever means to keep the supply coming…

As long as suppliers know that there are users willing to pay such a high margin, you will have a suppliers willing to risk whatever to get the returns…

    Smarts aren’t necessary…

Look at every single drugs court case in Bermuda history, then discount the residents…. you know what you are left with… a representation of the broadest demographic of non-bermudian there is… if we assume that they are only the ones that got caught, and there were many that didn’t…

You crack down on the local suppliers means anyone of this large non-resident demographic becomes a potential importer as soon as they realise that local supply is dead…

In any case… good luck winning(maintaining) the war…

    • Tommy Chong says:

I agree! Any numbskull can import drugs. Especially the way this guy was importing them since customs exhaust its resources on searching cruise & air passengers while there are loads of shipping containers coming into Bermuda weekly. All someone needs to have is a person on the start end who is good at metal work & welding & this doesn’t take a bachelors degree to be good at.

I also agree on the foreigner aspect of drug dealing in Bermuda you’ve put forth. many abroad have no idea of how much higher a profit margin for drug dealing in Bermuda is than anywhere else except for Japan but if they did…
Many of the the drug dealers in the history of Bermuda were not born a Bermudian citizen. A certain notorious & deceased head of gangs in Bermuda who’s nick name represented the foreign country he was born in comes to mind when stating this.

@ waiting for more says: You hit the nail right on the head

  10. M.P.Mountbatten JP says:

A convicted international drugs and arms dealer ; your children must be really proud of their daddy .

  11. Pastor Syl says:

@ terry and george: I hope you are right and the minuscule sentences for importation of ammunition are the result of a plea bargain that will net those “others not before the courts.” That is the only mitigating factor for me. There are too many people with hardship histories who didn’t turn to importation of drugs, much less ammunition.

Call anyone tell me if this man is related to the Roberts couple that were jailed some years back for drug importation, too?

    • Bda Nanny says:

      @pastor Sly
No I dont believe they are, this dude has 3 other brothers and one sister….

  12. who dun it? says:

20 years!!! I bet if he was white he would have gotten off!

  13. Joe Public says:

Dam 20 years without a woman to touch and hold. Then you come out and be on the US Stop Chart. Was it really worth his freedom! Like daddy said some lessons can’t be learned they must be felt.

  14. The nitty gritty says:

The drugs and ammo were nothing short of war against society. You all know what the 200 bullets could alone much less the drugs. Should’ve been 20 years for the ammo and 15 for the drugs…….consecutively. Now you see why the war will never end. A weak judicial plus a weak society forever and ever amen.

  15. Skink says:

Stupid and pathetic you are………just like the sentence you have received!!!…..You are scum….just like the froth on a calm summers day……..how dare you disrespect my country and my fellow Bermudians. If you think this is brought about by hue, think not, cos I look like you!!!………stupid, stupid man.

  16. Sandman says:

It’s not the popular option but the best way to crack down on drugs is go after the users not the suppliers. Going after suppliers merely reduces competition among suppliers and pushes up the profit margins of those who don’t get caught.

Make a concerted effort to crack down harshly on users and it will scare a lot of people into not taking drugs in the firs place and it will reduce the number of people who can be sold to. That would reduce the dealers profits and make it less desirable to get involved with that trade.

It’s the unpopular option as mothers don’t want their drug-addicted babies going to prison for a long time. But in the long term it would work to cut the drugs problem.

    • Tommy Chong says:

GO SLEEP SANDMAN! The BPS already goes after the users & this doesn’t do jack except for give clientele to the imprisoned dealers. Addiction is not a crime its a disease & people with it should never be punished because they are victims but in this society they are. Should we also veto the imprisonment of people who have been mugged & raped so that rapist & muggers don’t have victims to go after. There’s countries in asia that imprison loads of addicts & it hasn’t helped them any because the addicts keep on coming & the problem never gets solved. Then on the other side there are countries in Europe that help addicts with there supply & REALLY cut out the dealer from the equation & while these countries professionals administer the addicts with their drugs they lower the dosages gradually & ween them off. These European countries have lessened the amount of drug crimes considerably due to their liberal practices.

    • More with less says:

This is what they have been doing in the war on drugs for the last thirty years. It’s still a big fail either way you go with it. What do you think all these young men are on the stop list for a joint for? Cause they constantly go after petty users. This is old school at best. Get a clue.

  17. Yes I says:

Such a friendly looking face…there’s no way he could’ve been involved in such a plot! *please note the sarcasm and read between the lines.

  18. MAKEMYDAY says:

So if he is the stupid “front man” as many people seem to think (he was already on the police radar) then who financed this operation?? Surely Roberts has half-a-brain to know who the major players are and who provided the big $$$ to purchase that amount of illegal inventory!! Me thinks he is not as dumb as he would have people believe!!
