Spirit’s Voyage To Haiti Service Mission

July 3, 2012

Yesterday [July 2] was the first of twenty character building days for 27 of Bermuda’s youth and professional crew as they embarked on a joint service mission between Bermuda Sloop Foundation and Feed My Lambs Ministry who has an orphanage in Port-au-Prince, Haiti.

Fourteen young people starting from 15-years-old boarded American Airlines yesterday, heading towards Haiti to assist the Ministry with their ongoing construction of a school and clinic for its orphanage. Soon after the plane took off, thirteen additional youth as young as 14-yrs-old boarded Spirit of Bermuda in Dockyard to begin their sail down to Haiti via the Turks and Caicos Islands.

In 10 days, the groups will switch sailing and construction roles, finally returning to Bermuda by sea and air on July 22nd. The voyage on Spirit is enhanced even more by the presence of historian and researcher, Dr. Clarence Maxwell Jr. who will be enlightening youth on board about the historical link between Haiti and Bermuda.

Executive Director, Denise Riviere, says “We are very excited about partnering with the Feed My Lambs Ministry in changing our youths’ lives forever. The best way to build character is to challenge yourself beyond your boundaries. This voyage and service mission will achieve that like no other experience can.

“Last year, we completed a service mission in the Dominican Republic and knew that we had to do it again. Now we can add to our mission, ~ changing the world, one service mission at a time ~.”

Miss Riviere, also thanks the sponsors and the participants for their fundraising efforts. With the community’s continued support, she hopes to have summer service missions for many years to come.
