Swallow-Tailed Kite Seen On Easter Sunday
Spotting kites soaring in the skies over Bermuda over the Easter period isn’t usually considered unusual — unless the kite in question happens to be of the feathered, Swallow-tailed variety.
The rare avian visitor to the island was photographed on Easter Sunday by a member of the Bermuda Audubon Society.
In recent days members report seeing the bird over various parts of the island including Sleepy Hollow in Hamilton Parish, Shark Hole and BIOS.
Considered a “real rarity” in Bermuda by the Audubon Society, the Swallow-tailed Kite is an elanid kite which breeds from the southeastern United States to eastern Peru and northern Argentina.
Most North and Central American breeders winter in South America where the species is resident year round.
The birds are occasionally seen in Bermuda during the spring.
