Free Health Screening Clinic For Bermuda’s Men

June 4, 2013

For the second year in a row, men over the age of 40 will be able to take advantage of a free Health Screening on Thursday [June 6] at the Seventh-Day Adventist Hall at an event sponsored and hosted by Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre.

The Men’s Health Screening Clinic will provide men with essential health screening tests and access to educational materials about diseases to which they may be prone.

“We believe this is a valuable and important event because men tend to shy away from visiting a doctor as frequently as women and as a result may put their health and longevity at risk,” said Tara Soares, Executive Director at Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre.

“By offering this event we feel we are contributing to raising awareness and ultimately assist men to participants in their own health maintenance.”

“According to Men’s Health Network, lack of awareness, inadequate health education, and culturally induced behavior patterns contribute to the poor health status of men”, a spokesperson said.

“Men die, on average, six years younger than women and have higher fatality rates than women for all ten leading causes of death. For example, 50 percent more men than women die of lung and colorectal cancers and nearly twice as many men as women die of heart disease.”

The FREE Men’s Health Screening Clinic is being held on Thursday June 6th from 10am – 5pm at the Seventh-Day Adventist Hall on King Street in Hamilton. Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre will be providing free parking in the lot adjacent to the Seventh-Day Adventist Church in an effort to provide easy access to the event.

“We are confident that through consistent education and health programmes, such as the Men’s Health Screening Clinic, we will begin to see changes in the overall health status of men,” states Rhonda Smith-Simmons, Education Officer at Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre.

Men visiting the clinic on June 6th may receive tests for: blood pressure, blood glucose, foot exam, lung function for smokers, body composition, dental screening and HIV testing. Local physicians will also be on hand to meet with any men who have health concerns or would like to discuss their risk factors.

A number of Bermuda’s leading health organisations are coming together to provide these health services free of charge. The Department of Health, CDC (Communicable Diseases), Bermuda Diabetes Association, Bermuda Heart Foundation, Bermuda Podiatry, Open Airways, Complete Health Improvement Program, Lazer Health Bermuda, Jiketsu Martial Arts & Natural Healing Centre, Blessing for Abundance and Abbott Nutrition will all be in attendance.

In addition TOPS Ltd. and Barritt’s are providing sponsorship through donations of office equipment and water for those in attendance.

The Men’s Health Screening Clinic is sponsored by Movember.bm, a Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre fundraising campaign where men in Bermuda grow a MO (moustache) during the month of November, raising pledges and participating as a walking billboard for men’s health.
