AME Church Honours Tradition Of Cup Match

St. Paul AME Church honoured the tradition of Cup Match with a spirit-filled service on Sunday [July 28].

With the congregation sporting traditional colours in support of the teams, Sunday’s service also recognized the Cup Match achievements of former players Mr. Eldon Raynor [St. George's] and Mr. Joseph “Joe” Bailey [Somerset].

Mr.Raynor played from 1958 to 1979 scoring 738 runs and claiming 21 wickets. Mr. Bailey led Somerset to a famous victory in St. George’s in 1981. Between 1963 and 1982 he scored 530 runs and took 39 wickets.

Rev. Terry Hassell, Assistant Pastor at Allen Temple AME Church, Somerset, brought the message entitled “Why are you Trippin’?”.

Sunday’s service also set the stage for this coming Sunday’s worship experience which will commemorate the 179th anniversary of the Emancipation of slaves in the British Empire.

Pastor of St. Paul, Rev. Nicholas Tweed will preach the sermon and elements of the worship experience will celebrate the freedom of people of colour since Emancipation.
