Next to undertaking its a lucrative business.
Mazumbo: Sad but so true
the whole region is in serious trouble time to move to Sweden
Not surprising. People volunteer to go to our prison here.
Your own bed, hot shower, three meals a day and you don’t have to cook or do the dishes, library, gym, exercise yard, all medical and dentist needs taken care of, no charge. Free education, free laundry service although admittedly, not much of a selection for your wardrobe.
For some of Bermuda’s elderly, its not such a bad alternative.
End the war on drugs and set the victims free.
Or stop dumb people from using drugs….
Family Man, you got a point there bie’ Just ask “Scar Fox” and a few others that seem to return to prison within a year of being released.Yes sire’ as you’d mentioned, “people volunteer to go to prison here”.
Where is Canada, hmmmm, so close to the USA, yet so far away…
well ya….stop lockin guys up for ipods and hings might change!
With the judges/police officer who seem like they are always on their period, asinine laws being passed (I.e. making it illegal to ride with an I-pod) and antiquated laws that need to be off the books (I.e. conscription) I’m surprised we aren’t ranked #2 as quick as Bermuda is to lock people up for nothing.
Free de herb mon! Save de taxpayer loads of money! LOL!!
seein
Good job the UK took a bunck of our gangsters or Bermuda would make the top five. Thanks guv!
what is value of housing 1 prisoner per year…..
417 x ??? = millons of our tax paying dollars….
put them to work ,so they can earn their keep…..
Around $100,000 a year I believe.
Redeploy the HIGH financial combined cost of Courts/DPP/police/prisons to finance: 1)breaking up ‘gangs’ 2)provide work for our chronically underemployed youth—- 3)better police senior schools with retired Police Officers so joining a gang isn’t a matter of social survival- 4)make prisoners ‘work’-on community (cost) projects if necessary-to offset their prison costs 5)restrict prison sentences to serious crimes of violence-or as a ‘last’resort AND-6) repeal prison sentences for ‘civil crimes’ e.g. ‘debtor’s prison’! Just a start!!
Interesting that so many small island countries make the list – any guesses as to why?
Ok so here’s the deal, cut back and serve them twice a day and wash their clothes 3times per week. Government’s books would be back in balance within 3 years. Putting them out to work is not the answer in Bermuda unfortunately due to higher officer risk and the need to employ additional staff to cover the risk on the outside.
Save the money and take away their luxuries.
