Video: Mona Li$a Returns To Island Life Home
Mona Li$a — aka Simona Eversley — first hit the headlines with her music video “Islands Not The Same,” and has now returned to the island where she is the newest edition to the Irie 98.3 FM radio airwaves.
She was born in Bermuda, however moved to Illinois in 1998 when she was 10 years old. She said her musical journey began as poetry, expressing her inner feelings about subjects such as her non-existent father, struggles with finding herself, and her cultural change from Bermuda to America.
Fifteen years later Mona Li$a returned to her island home and joined the team at Irie 98.3. She has been on air since April of this year and hosts the “The Reggae Riot” every Monday through Friday from 9.00am-3.00pm.
She can also be heard hosting “Irie Classics, Old School vs New School” every Saturday from 8.00am-12.00pm. Local artists including E-Levelz, Stevie Dread, King Size Keevy & Rasta Rebel have been featured guests on her show.
Her main focus is spreading the message of non-violence and to uplift those who are having a bad day. Mona Li$a said she has received positive feedback from her listeners and as she plans for the future she hopes for a prosperous career within the radio broadcasting field.
The hip hop artist has released songs and music videos including the single ‘Island Not the Same,’ which she was inspired to write after her cousin and good friend Jahmiko Leshore was murdered on March 1st, 2011.
26-year-old Mr Leshore was leaving a residence in the Boundary Crescent area of Devonshire when he was shot multiple times, sustaining mortal wounds. His girlfriend was pregnant at the time, and gave birth to their son a few days after Mr Leshore’s murder.
An influencing factor to returning home to Bermuda for Mona Li$a was the separation from family during difficult periods like the loss of her cousin. She has now returned to the island, and is happy to be back with her family, and spends time with Mr Leshore’s son whenever she can.
