simon parkinsonBermuda-based author SJ Parkinson [pictured] is the winner of the October 2013 Kindle Book Award. His science fiction novel Predation competed against sixty-four titles over the month and attracted more than a thousand votes.

The Book Awards have been run by ‘not for profit’ publisher Acclaimed Books Limited since 2008 and, in that time, thousands of voters around the world have shown their appreciation by supporting and nominating books in the competition.

“It’s been exciting to take part in this competition and experience first-hand the loyalty and dedication of my readers worldwide. To win against such strong competition is the icing on the cake,” said Mr Parkinson.

The competition in this year’s competition was strong, with several international best sellers, including JK Rowling’s The Casual Vacancy, in addition to talented emerging authors making up the field. In a single month, the voting can run into thousands, and the awards site contains numerous reviews and comments.

Managing Director of the competition Peter Lihou offered a personal message of congratulations to SJ Parkinson via a press release, saying, “Over the years, we’ve seen a great many popular titles gain the tangible applause of their fans by their votes and comments, but Predation enjoys particularly warm support.

“It really is quite an accomplishment for an author to inspire their customers so much that they get online and vote in such numbers. Predation is a very worthy winner!”

The Kindle Book Awards is the only international competition that is open to all titles distributed in Kindle or printed formats by Amazon sites around the world. Any one can nominate or vote for a title, provided it is available on Amazon, without charge or registration. Dubbed the ‘People’s Book Awards,’ this openness attracts large numbers of participants.

Predation’s official description says, “Two hundred years in the future, human beings have traveled to the stars, settled colonies on fifty worlds, and finally discovered intelligent life: the Drakk’Har—large, cold-blooded reptilian creatures who see human beings not as equals, but as food. War was unavoidable. Ill-prepared for the sudden and vicious conflict, humanity finds itself on the losing side.

“After three years of retreating from the onslaught to gain time, humanity has dug in its heels, built up their forces, and begun to fight back. When intelligence identifies the distant Mindon star system as a source of Drakk’Har warships, a major engagement begins. Star Command Fleet Nine strikes the first blow in a new offensive campaign.

“During combat operations on Mindon-2, the plan goes horribly wrong. Casualties mount on both sides. The men and women on the raid find themselves in a merciless crucible that threatens to change them forever. The Drakk’Har know victory can only come by overwhelming the humans with savage brutality.”

Congratulations to Mr Parkinson for a great achievement.

How come there is so much comment (mostly negative) on the Lamb-Foggo closure and NOT ONE on this positive piece of news? We should be ashamed of ourselves.
