MP Organises Neighbourhood Watch Meeting

November 7, 2013

IMG_00001167On Tuesday [Nov 5] the Pembroke West Central Branch of the Progressive Labour Party, hosted a Community Policing meeting at West Pembroke Pentecostal Assembly.

In attendance were around fifty residents from the Pembroke Park community who heard a presentation from the Bermuda Police Service Community Action Team for the Central Parishes.

The CAT officers discussed how to set up a Neighbourhood Watch program, the benefits of communities partnering with the police as well as tips to secure homes and property against would-be burglars.

After the meeting, twenty residents signed up to take an active role in developing the Pembroke Park Neighbourhood Watch group through future meetings.

Area MP David Burt, who organized the meeting in response to an increase in burglaries in the area, was pleased with the turnout and is looking forward to hosting similar meetings.

Mr Burt said, “We were extremely pleased with the turnout, it shows that residents would like to work together to keep our community safe. We will be meeting in the next 2 weeks to formalise the neighbourhood watch.

“If we all work together, I am confident that we can reduce burglaries in the Pembroke Park Area. I would like to thank the residents for attending and especially the Community Action Team for and excellent presentation.

“I’m looking forward to getting Pembroke Park’s neighbourhood watch up and running so that we can move on to setup watches in other parts of the constituency.

“I’d also like to make sure I thank the West Pembroke Pentecostal Assembly and Pastor Eldridge Burrows for the use of their facilities. ”

Residents in the Pembroke Park area who were unable to attend the meeting, but would like to participate in the neighbourhood watch are encouraged to contact MP David Burt via email at dburt@parliament.bm or via PLP Headquarters at 292-2264.
