Tyrone Smith Named As GLVC Hall Of Famer
Bermudian track & field athlete Tyrone Smith — a two-time Olympian — has been named as a member of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Hall of Fame, class of 2014.
Smith will be inducted along with five others at a Banquet in St. Louis.
As a student-athlete at Missouri S&T, Smith was a three-time all-GLVC honoree and five-time champion in the jumping events.
He won the league’s indoor titles in 2006 and 2007, the 2006 outdoor championship and captured a pair of indoor triple jump championships. In 2006 he was named the GLVC’s Athlete of the Year.
Smith is the current school record holder at Missouri S&T in both the indoor and outdoor long jump, and is the Bermuda national record holder, setting the mark of 8.22 meters [26-11¾ inches] in the process of winning the Central American and Caribbean Games in Puerto Rico in 2010.
Following his career at Missouri S&T, Smith moved to Texas and began competing on the international circuit. He represented Bermuda at 2008 Olympic Games in China and recorded a top mark of 7.91 meters [25-11 1/2].
Four years later at the 2012 London Olympics, Smith qualified for the finals with a season best jump of 7.97 meters [26-1¾] in the preliminaries, then finished in 12th place in the finals the following day.
Well done, this is great accomplishment for Bermuda young man. Congrats Tyrone Smith.
