BHB Connects General Wing To New Acute Care

April 28, 2014

The King Edward VII Memorial Hospital will expand to include the new Acute Care Wing this September, and construction is now complete on the structure that connects them.

“This is an exciting milestone in the building’s construction,” said Bermuda Hospitals Board CEO Venetta Symonds. “Although not in use yet, we now have a clear path on each floor between the new Acute Care Wing and the existing General Wing, connecting the old and the new.”

“The five-storey link has two ‘through car’ elevators which have doors on both sides to accommodate differences in building levels,” said BCM McAlpine President Alan Burland.

Paget Health Services General Manager Barry New added, “In the new wing the surgical unit is on the second floor. An interesting design feature is that the link is level with the General Wing on this floor.”

A spokesperson said, “On the second floor the new surgical unit connects to the Intensive Care Unit in the existing building. The flat link ensures a fast and safe journey for acutely ill patients between the two buildings as there are no slopes or ramps. This avoids the need for any slopes or ramps which would otherwise hinder the most efficient transfer of patients between the two buildings.

“The public will be able to use the link on the ground floor to move between the two wings.”

and this has taken how long to do so far and how much?

    • The hospital is a P3 says:

As a Public Private Partnership (a “P3″) it hasn’t cost the taxpayer a cent. That’s up to the private side of the partnership. The taxpayer (i.e., the Public side of the Partnership) gets to pay over the years while the facility operates. The truly magical thing about this arrangement is that the debt never appears on the government’s books. That means that Paula managed to borrow the better part of $400 million without adding it to the government’s debt.

BTW, P3′s rarely, if ever, end up being good for the public side of the partnership. A few minutes with Google should convince you of that.

That’s not for you to worry about.

It is my hope they address the quality of care they provide. A new building does nothing to instill my confidence or want to place my health care in their hands.

An acute wing without an ICU is like a unicorn. They tell you that they exist but you never get to see them. Except in Bermuda, that is.
