Police To Search For Mr. Grange In Sandys

May 13, 2014

william grange missing in bermudaThe police said they will be carrying out searches for missing Canadian visitor William Grange in certain neighborhoods in‎ Sandys, as a “result of persistent sightings.”

Mr. Grange — who suffers from short term memory loss — arrived in Bermuda from Napanee, Canada earlier this month and has not been seen since approximately 10.00pm on May 2nd.

The 67 year old was staying at the Cambridge Beaches Resort in Sandys with his wife, and went out for a walk and subsequently disappeared.

Extensive island-wide searches over the past 10 days — which have included the Police, Bermuda Regiment, Marine Police, Police K-9 Unit, Regimental Boat Troop, Junior Leaders, as well as volunteer divers and members of the community — have failed to locate the Canadian visitor, and yesterday the police said they have to transition the search process into being “reactive”.

Police Media Manager Dwayne Caines said, “The Bermuda Police Service will be carrying out searches for Mr. Grange in certain neighborhoods in‎ Sandys, as a result of persistent sightings in those areas.

“Members of the public should not be alarmed with the sight of officers searching properties and other specific areas,” added Mr. Caines. ”All officers will be wearing reflective police vest.We thank you in advance for your cooperation.”

The searches will take place tomorrow [May 14] between 9am and 5pm.

Anyone who has seen or who may have information on the whereabouts of Mr. Grange is urged to contact the main police telephone number 295-0011 immediately, reporting all relevant information.

In addition, Cambridge Beaches Resort & Spa will be holding continued searches for Mr. Grange daily this week at 6:00pm from Monday through Saturday, and volunteers are asked to meet at the Reception Desk by 6:00pm.

Please do an extensive search on Morgan’s Point. There is a lot of property to hide

  2. somuchless says:

I don’t get it. If people claim they see him why won’t they not approach him and take him to safety.

    This is crazy.

    • PSJ says:

I agree with somuchless…..if u see him u should keep him in ur sight as u call the police…..

    • You must take into consideration the possible mindset of this man at this hour who himself don’t have a clue to where he is, or to who the people is around him.

Nothing looks familiar to him and that state of mind can cause one to be fearful and aggressive all at the same time, the good news however I think is the fact that there have been sightings and that gives the family hope.

So our prayers are that he is kept safe from harm and danger by Almighty God and rescued before any danger can come to him, also that the family don’t give up hope and keep on believing for his safe return.

      • Also if there has not been any sightings or has been needs to be clarified by the authorities, but I am hopeful that he is alive and just needs to be rescued.

        • The Dark Knight Returns says:

Mr. Santucci, I’m not following your statement. Whether scared or not people must act if they see him. I seriously doubt anyone has seen this man in the last 10 days. There is no way a person could go undetected for so many days without help. For all we know, he’s probably in another country. Let’s be real about this. There’s been numerous sightings of this man and almost all have turned out negative. You are speaking as if you are convinced of his condition. Only his family would know his true condition and scared or not there is one thing that will always remove our fear, it’s preservation of life. If he is hungry he will beg or take food at some point and no matter what you or anybody else says that’s is a fact.

          • Annie says:

Very good point about the preservation of life thing-surely he must be ravenous at this point and would approach someone for food or water.

The other thing is that there is an abundance of fruit right now-he could be picking cherries frome someone’s tree or eating avocadoes or something…or perhaps he has teamed up with another displaced person who is helping him.

There are so many unanswered questions (sigh).

  3. Terry says:

Shouchless. Can you back up your statement>
Where has it been stated what you say.

Please direct me to that source.

    • Yahoo says:

Do you even read the stories before you make your ridiculous comments?

      Please. Just. Stop.

    • somuchless says:

Terry it’s written right in the article: Police Media Manager Dwayne Caines said, “The Bermuda Police Service will be carrying out searches for Mr. Grange in certain neighborhoods in‎ Sandys, as a result of persistent sightings in those areas.

  4. hmmmm says:

I agree! If you see him! take him straight to the POLICE! I really hope they find him!

    • Hurricane says:

Saying take him to the police may sound easy, but this is grown man, whose to say one would be able to “take him” anywhere.

  5. Ok….naw loonk…all hotel rooms, cycle rental, cruise ship passengers should have key fob gps.!

  6. With a locating beeper…a very shrill loud one….so when the serial #is programmed in….any one with a key fob and the same serial number could locate the subject…

    • James Rego says:

For folks who loved ones in similar conditions, this could help. I have been using it for our Cats and can be used for children and adults.

      http://www.thecatlocator.com

Sorry to say, it will be of little use for this gentleman.

  7. Look to the past…look to the future think of all the issues this could and hopefully will….don’t even need to set you flux capasitor…..just search it on your favourite search engine………or a small comfortable ankle bracelet for those of reduced capacity….but the gps in a phone is …what …1/4″ if that….the battery would vary for distance ….though I’m not sure……I know when I was young……I had bells on my shoe laces…

  8. Annie says:

For goodness sake, what is wrong with people??? The man isn’t dangerous-just bewildered and confused. If I saw someone I suspected to be him, I’d approach the person-it would be easy enough to then verify if it was him or not…then I would hold onto him until the police came! I’d take a change on him becoming belligerent (as some with these conditions do) and ask for assistance from others as necessary but I wouldn’t just go on my merry way to report it later.

Think of someone with this condition as a child because mentally that is what they are like. If a child was lost and you spotted them, you wouldn’t just go on your way and report it when you reached your destination-you’d stop whatever you are doing to secure that child before he/she gets hurt-the same thing here…treat this poor man as if he is a lost child and if you see him, secure him safely until the police arrive (surely wherever you’re going can wait a few minutes and no boss would condemn an employee being late to work if it means saving someone’s life!!!)

  9. Confused says:

Can the police please tell the public the neighborhoods that he has been spotted, so that people can narrow their searches to these neighborhoods and surrounding areas? There are people who cannott make 6pm at Cambridge- but want to help in the search. Let us know where we can look so that we do not waste any more precious time! In addition, can they please release more information that would be helpful? For example – I heard through someone he is/was a sailor/boater. This could just be a rumour, but it would make people understand why the police were searching in boats – and would probably cause people to go out and check their own boats. I feel that there has not been enough information released in this situation.

  10. Um Jus Sayin' says:

I know that as a ppl, we look for the best in others, but has the wife been thoroughly questioned or considered in this man’s disappearance?

  11. Bermy says:

Exactly… who lets a man with memory issues go out for late walks!

  12. Prayerful says:

Maybe the wife has dementia as well. We certainly do not want another Canadian incident so soon after the Rebecca Middleton film episode.

  13. MAKE MY DAY says:

Unfortunately… I think he somehow got into the ocean / water by perhaps “accident” and drowned (He did have a Medical condition)!!! I hope the police are keeping an open-mind about this case… As perhaps it was *murder/* homicide!!

I have seen *FAR WORSE* crimes committed in the USA every week – by the dozens!!!

Lets face it…If you wanted to dispose of someone (who has medical/mental issues)- what better place than the Cambridge Beaches setting!!

Lt. Joe Kendra / Colorado Springs PD.

  14. Terry says:

    “persistent sightings”.
    My mistake.
My point was that I never saw this on other media.
    Thus my comment.
    Forgive me.
    Shalom.

  15. Napanee says:

Individuals with short term memory loss generally do not react as someone else may, they have a realization that they are hungry or must eat or need help however the thought process is not the same as someone who doesn’t have a cognitive impairment. They generally do not understand what the next step is to help themselves, they do not have the problem solving skills needed. Mr. Grange has lived in the same small town a lifetime, same neighbourhood, most of the same neighbours, life here generally does not change much, there is a familiarity to him, he is now in another country the landscape is unfamiliar, everything is unfamiliar, more than likely he is scared and has gone into hiding. Mr. Grange earlier in the fall became lost in his own backyard it is not possible that he has fled the country. He has not had any medication since may 2, the likelihood that he is dehydrated and Sick is a very real possibility. As for Mrs. Grange she is a very loving and caring wife, this is truly very unfortunate and we are all hoping and praying at home for his safe and sound return, thank you to all of you for your efforts in looking for Bill!

  16. Napanee says:

Make my day, we have known the Granges a lifetime there is no foul play in this particular case, Mr. Grange has not been murdered he has wandered off and is missing. Prayful, mrs. Grange does not have dementia. Confused, yes Mr. Grange at one time was an avid sailor and owned a sailboat.

  17. JUNK YARD DOG says:

The People of Bermuda, you have to keep looking you have no other choice !

Who are the beneficiaries of the estate ?
    Where is his wallet ?
Does he have cash in his pocket
    Where is his passport ?
Has he done this before ?
    Was he unhappy ?
Does he play jokes on people?
Was there a prior family feud ?
    Can he swim ?
    Does he like walking ?
Does he fall to the ground ?
    Is he on Medications ?
    Why did he choose Bermuda?
Was he happy to come here ?
