Alpha Beautillion Set For Sunday, June 8th

June 3, 2014

The Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Epsilon Theta Lambda Chapter, will be hosting its 13th annual Alpha Beautillion on Sunday, June 8t at the Ruth Seaton James Auditorium for the Performing Arts at 5.30pm.

A spokesperson said, “The Alpha Beautillion is a rite of passage program for high school male seniors designed to inspire and stimulate academic excellence, community service, learning, and leadership development. Each year, male senior students are selected from our public and private schools to participate in this mentorship program.

“This year, we are proud to announce the outstanding young men who have been selected by their respective schools to participate in the 2014 Alpha Beautillion: Torian Hill will be representing Bermuda Institute, Caleb Darrell from Cedarbridge Academy, Zachary Cole Kawaley-Lathan from Saltus Grammar School, Ryan Perinchief representing the Berkeley Institute, and Kaleb Tota from Warwick Academy.

“Over the past seven months, these outstanding gentlemen have been participating in several fraternity programs and community initiatives. These programs include the Math Attack Program at Dellwood Middle School, which assists M1 male students with mental mathematics in English and foreign languages, and engaging in extensive community service activities at the Matilda Smith-Williams Residence Home.

“The Alpha Beautillion provides hands on experience for the Alpha Beaus that will bring about self-awareness, self-determination, self-actualization, and purpose greater than self. As the Brothers of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity are cognizant of its responsibility to empower these young men, their programs expose the mentees to learning experiences that will enhance their sense of civic responsibility and personal development.”

“Each Alpha Beau has participated in writing, interviewing and resume workshops, leadership development workshops, and oratorical workshops to hone their skills and to prepare them for their debut at the 2014 Alpha Beautillion.

“On Sunday, June 8, at the Ruth Seaton James for the Performing Arts, each Alpha Beau will present an oratorical speech, display his talent, and answer an impromptu question on a current event. One of the highlights of the evening will be the Alpha Beaus’ participation in a Step Show exhibition. This electrifying presentation is received with thunderous applause from the audience, and this year we anticipate an even greater response as the Alpha Beaus have been in rehearsals for the past several weeks to perfect this presentation.

“This year our judges will be Minister of Education and Development Dr. Grant Gibbons, Terry Roberson, CEO of Cablevision, Jache Adams, Relationship Manager, Butterfield Bank, former 2003 Alpha Beau Glenn Jones, General Manager of Media House, and Nobert Simons, Director, Department of Youth & Sport.

“The Alpha Beaus will be judged on their deportment and participation in the program initiatives over the seven month mentoring period and their overall performance on the night of the Alpha Beautillion. The first place winner will receive a five thousand dollar bursary, the second place winner three thousand, third place winner two thousand, and all other participants one thousand dollars. All five Beaus will participate in a Leadership Development Institute at St. John’s University in Long Island, New York, sponsored by the Brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated.

“Doors for the event will be open at 5.00pm and the show will begin at 5.30pm. Tickets are on sale at Brown & Co and People’s Pharmacy for $25.

“This family affair will showcase the talents of some of Bermuda’s most outstanding high school male seniors. We look forward to the support of the Bermuda community as we showcase the talents of our young men who will undoubtedly become the movers and shakers in our community in the years ahead.”
