Lawyers Promote Bermuda In Switzerland
Two lawyers have just returned to Bermuda after promoting the island at a conference in Switzerland. Jeffrey Elkinson, a director in the Conyers Dill & Pearman Litigation and Insolvency department, and Peter Pearman, a director in the firm’s Private Client and Trust department, both spoke at the Transcontinental Trusts Conference, in Geneva.
The conference was organised to look at a broad range of issues affecting trusts and the trust industry, including a understanding of Sharia and Middle Eastern families, private trust companies, as well as jurisdictional focuses on Bermuda, Switzerland, and other locales.
Mr. Elkinson said, “My focus was very much on the litigation side of things in relation to trusts. It was an excellent opportunity to promote the Island as a stable jurisdiction.”
“Other speakers at the conference, which brought together leading business analysts from across Europe, included British MP Diane Abbott, Mr. Justice David Hayton, a Justice of the Caribbean Court of Justice, and Justice Anthony Smellie, the Honourable Chief Justice of the Cayman Islands.”
Mr. Pearman, who gave a presentation on Bermuda regarding issues including FATCA, TIEAs and how the island’s law continues to be updated to reflect the modern paradigm, said, “The conference was an excellent platform from which to reach key industry leaders. They were all very receptive to hearing about Bermuda and what it has to offer.”
