PLP Recognises International Women’s Day

March 8, 2015

“The PLP today joins with the global community in observing International Women’s Day,” the Progressive Labour Party said today [Mar 8].

“While women have made great strides in Bermuda, the issues of gender inequity and physical abuse continue to impact negatively on the lives of our Bermudian women in their respective professional and social lives,” a spokesperson said.

“On this International Women’s Day we recognize the women of the PLP for their dedication, sacrifice and leadership over the years in fighting for a Bermuda that works for all Bermudians.

“We celebrate the women who have led us, from Dame Lois Browne-Evans, the first female opposition leader in the Commonwealth; former Premier Dame Jennifer Smith who lead us to electoral victory and former Premier Paula Cox .

“We celebrate the many women to who ran for and were elected under the PLP banner and those who silently have worked in the background over the last half century to ensure a Bermuda that works for Bermudians. We salute the women who marched, fought and worked to bring a level of equality to Bermuda.

“On the political front much more work is needed to increase female participation in our political system in order to bring and maintain a balance of perspectives and policies.

“We salute the thousands of Bermudian women who recently stood together in the sun and rain for three days. As a country we must continue to fight for true equality of our women.”

    Is this Marc Bean’s opinion?

    Whilst the Premier and OBA Chair Lynne Woolridge have enthusiastically embraced International women’s day and all it stands for in the article right above this one;
a”spokesperson” (whomever that may be) for the PLP appears to have simply hijacked this noble event and pushed forward an in-house, self serving agenda.
Yes it is wonderful that Dame Jen and Dame Lois broke down barriers, but please try to embrace the bigger picture as the governing party has done.
This issue is about more than an opportunity to score political points.
Kindly remember that many of us already have a very dim view of the PLP’s treatment of women in the light of comments made by your current leader.
Come on, clean up your act and get with the program.

You need to ask UBP about Dr. Barbara Ball and Dame Lois Brown-Evans

      • campervan says:

There is not much I can do about what happened in the past whatever that may or may not have involved.
We need to focus on what can be done in the present and that involves calling people on inappropriate disgusting mysogynistic comments that have no place in society. Particularly if they come from a supposed leader.

Man they must have found a moment when Bean was asleep to slip this press release out lol

  4. jt says:

    Predictable and true to form.

Mr. Bean’s comments are notable by their absence. Also predictable.

  5. Time Shall Tell says:

Even when the message is positive there are those that can’t help but twist it to be negative. Yet are the same people complaining how things never get better.

  6. Build a Better Bermuda says:

The sentiment of this day is important, so I find this faceless statement from the PLP hard to swallow, it is entirely one sided and flys in the face of the degrading attitude of their leader that the party has left unchallenged. Until such behaviour is ousted from their ranks, their statements hold little weight beyond empty words.

    LOL

Bean & co make me laugh.

  8. Concerned Citizen says:

Nandi, Leah, Alexis, Toni, what do they all have in common? Well, let’s ask, Jeff, Mark, Jeff, Mike, Craig, and Shawn. That’s right, ask them OBA supporters! Need an example? Leah Scott gets caught signing her name to a plagerised OPED, that Dunkley had likely authorized, yet instead of apologizing to the public, she apologized to Dunkley!
