Baseball: YAO Cal Ripken & Senior Results
Action continued in the YAO Cal Ripken baseball league this weekend with the Orioles defeating the Cardinals 17-11, the Braves and Cubs playing to a 5-5 tie and the Orioles defeating the Marlins in Senior League play.
Orioles 17 Cardinals 11
In the morning game at Kindley Field, the Orioles outlasted the Cardinals in a slugfest, 17 – 11. The teams traded huge innings, with the Orioles scoring 11 in the bottom of the 4th, and the Cardinals tightening the game up with 6 runs in the top of the 5th.
Thomas Gesick made his mound debut for the Orioles going one and two thirds innings, and striking out the first batter he faced. Liam McCue crushed a grand slam for the Orioles and Joshua Blee reached base all five at bats. For the Cardinals, Austin Dowling had two hits, driving in three runs and Sam Lipchutz scored three runs.
Braves 5 Cubs 5
The Braves and Cubs played to a 5-5 tie at Kindley Field in the afternoon game. Sam Resnik handled the Braves’ lineup with ease, racking up 11 strikeouts. Aiden Washington and Micaiah Furbert handled the Cubs equally, striking out 13, over 6 innings.
The Braves jumped out to an early 2-0 lead. The Cubs answered the Braves’ top inning with two runs of their own in the first. Kaelin Paynter racked up two RBIs on two hits for Cubs. Some timely hits by Braves Aaron White and Jack Roberts gave the Braves a late lead. The Braves pitching started to struggle, allowing the Cubs to come back to tie in the bottom of the 6th.
Cal Ripken League rules allow only one extra inning, during the regular season. Kaelin Paynter shut down the Braves in the top of the seventh, With Jackson Burns coming on for the Braves in the bottom half to close the out the game.
YAO Senior League
Five hits weren’t enough for the Marlins as they lost a shootout, 12-8 in six innings to the Orioles at the YAO Baseball Field.
The Orioles got off to a strong start with 4 runs in the first with Doubles from Daniel Exell , Dylan Sommerville and Stephon Paynter. While the bats were strong the pitching of Nic Martin shut down the bats of the Marlins pitching three innings and allowing only 1 hit, two walks and 1 earned run.
Three runs in the bottom of the third helped the Marlins close their deficit to 6-3. An RBI Double by Billy Montgomery, a wild pitch, and an error fueled the Marlins comeback but Martin induced an inning-ending out from Riley Rego.
The Orioles increased their lead with three runs in the fourth with Paynter starting the inning with a single, plating Jackson Spurling. That was followed by Dylan Sommerville’s Double , scoring Exell and Paynter.
After pushing across four runs in the bottom of the fifth, the Marlins faced just a 10-7 deficit. A wild pitch, a groundout by Montgomery, and a two run Home Run by Gabriel Fox set off the Marlins rally. Paynter ended the inning by striking out Jordan Slade.
An RBI single by Montgomery helped the Marlins to get within 4 but Alex Bordage ended the game by getting Riley to hit into and easy out at first.
