Officer Fired After Sexual Exploitation Conviction

June 24, 2015

The police have confirmed that a 37 year old man — who was convicted of sexually exploiting his daughter — has been discharged from the police service with immediate effect.

Prior to his conviction, the man had served as a police officer for 18 years.

Commissioner of Police Michael DeSilva said, “The Supreme Court yesterday convicted a 37 year old man for incest. The court found that the man had sexually exploited his daughter while in a position of trust.

“The Bermuda Police Service treats offences committed against children very seriously and we recently increased the number of investigators trained to deal with those crimes.

“The public has a legitimate expectation that their police service will do all it can to tackle crimes committed against children.

“It is particularly disheartening to report that the man convicted in this case was a police officer with 18 years of service. He has been discharged from the police service with immediate effect.

“I am appreciative of the excellent work that was done by all involved to bring the case to court and I am particularly mindful of the courage and perseverance of the victim in this case.”

Update 8.11pm: To clarify, the reason the person is not being named is that one is generally not permitted to name defendants in cases like this out of respect for the victim’s privacy, as by naming him, it also could serve to identify the victim since they are related. As the Commissioner noted, the victim has displayed great courage in seeing this case brought to court.

  1. DISGUSTING! says:

Sick f***** man WTF! How could you do that s***?

    • sage says:

All cases he “investigated” should be reviewed. Increased penalty would be fitting.

    • MAKE MY DAY says:

He should be *named and shamed* – particularly as he was a “cop”!!! In the States hid A$$ would be named….Same as the UK!!!

      • SOB says:

So you name and shame and the victim is identified??? think clearly before writing.

        • MAKE MY DAY says:

You do NOT have to “legally” name the victim under Brit law!!

        • SMH says:

Yes, he should be named; all sexual offenders should be named.

But ONLY if they hadn’t stated that it was his daughter.

Victim details should be kept confidential.

        • De says:

          Exactly!!

  2. Marge says:

Can you imagine this so called police officer (to serve and protect) had sex with his daughter !!!!!!!!!!!!!! he should be named and shamed….

    • enough says:

Dumb idea as that would clearly identify the poor victim of this depravity and she has clearly suffered enough.

    • Bermudian. says:

No worries, this piece of Garbage will soon be known to us all.

    • Cynda says:

NO-he can’t be named, Marge. That is not to protect him, it is to protect the identity of his daughter who is an innocent victim in all of this.

I know him and I still can’t believe this. He’s the last person you’d think would do something like this. He always seemed really ‘moral’ is the best word I’d have for him. What a shame.

  3. Raymond Ray says:

I hope he receives all he deserves! Now that he has been convicted. Will he have to reimburse the Government the wages he’d received while on bail?
If not, then he and all others that were / are convicted of a crime/s and placed on bail with full pay for x amount of weeks, months or even years need be compelled to repay the said wages one way or another…Oh, we the public should also know who these individuals are e.g. their names!

    • Jeremy Deacon says:

Raymond, if you name him you run the risk of identifying the victim so the law prohibits this in order to protect the victim.

      • Raymond Ray says:

Then Jeremy, maybe the victim/s needs to be asked how would they feel if their perpetrator were to be exposed to the public? (All for the protection of other youngsters.)

        • A Ming says:

The poor young lady has been humiliated enough, do you seriously think that she wants to be further exposed. People especially other young people can be very cruel if they are armed with knowledge such as this. I do not think she should be asked anything like you suggest she has already been embarrassed enough. The perp has been found guilty and will be punished just leave at that. Can’t you understand?

      • De says:

How many ways can you say this? It’s to protect the victim you idiots!!

  4. Terry says:

    FOIA.
    Shalom.

  5. Pastor Syl says:

So he has been dismissed from the Police Service (and rightly so) but the article mentions nothing about his sentence – or did I miss it? I am persuaded our justice system does not consider loss of employment sufficient punishment.

Although he is not named, I am hoping this is a case I am aware of, and not yet another child who has had to endure the trauma of being abused by a father.

    • watcher says:

hes been remanded in custody an awaits sentencing.

  6. MB says:

To the victim, I commend you for your courage, I could never imagine what it took to bring this charge and case to court and achieve conviction. I am glad this part is over for you and pray you can move on and up.

  7. D says:

    Nasty sh**

  8. Jay says:

So he touched his own kid and walks around unknown? Whats to stop him from touching my kid?

    • Cynda says:

Unfortunately, he can’t be named because it will then put a stigma on his daughter-everyone will know she is the one whose father abused her and that isn’t fair. Sadly, Bermuda being Bermuda people will probably find out who he is.

    • Think says:

      A lengthy jail sentence?

  9. Second says:

Once found guilty these persons are usually named (not the victim). He should be flogged at the flagpole for all Bermuda to see & than locked up to serve a long sentence.

    • Jeremy Deacon says:

They are not named if it can lead to the identity of the victim. The law says the victim should not suffer further as a result of being identifed

    • Seriously says:

AGREE 100% tie his rotten backside to the flagpole for a week then lock him up and send the key to Davy Jones’ locker. Poor child will never recover from this he is a disgrace!

      • Sickofantz says:

I hope that she does recover and having displayed the strength and fortitude to relive her experience in court she has already begun her escape and recovery. Be strong AND proud of yourself little one.

  10. Wtfhaha says:

I know who he is dirty b@st@rd, he always thought his sh#% didn’t stink!!!!

  11. Those that know, know says:

    and that’s all i’ll say……its about time

    • Oh no says:

      Finally…….sick

    • spoons says:

This comment implies you knew it was going on for a long time. Why didn’t you do something?

  12. What D Flop says:

What is wrong with society? We live in a world where people put there children on leashes and walk dogs in strollers. Now we have this so called officer who is supposed to protect us violating his own daughter. De lord will strike him down when its time

  13. Oh no says:

I have been waiting for this case to be bought to court. Now sentencing…… great. Sick is a understatement. I tell my kids police are there to help you and to know you did this. To your own child at that. Your child or any child is horrible. Your daughter is a very brave girl and I hope she knows she has done a very courageous thing by putting you behind bars and locked up like the animal you are. I am upset even knowing you. I have so much to say but it is getting difficult right now, having to hold back tears knowing the life time of pain you have caused your very own child. You are a horrible person and will not call you a man or a father, you are a animal, a sick animal. :(

  14. Goldie says:

And to think, he really believed he would not be found guilty..

Your arrogance is one of the reasons you are in this situation!

  15. Oh,I see now says:

Why do people rush to name and shame forgetting that the victims identity will also be revealed remember Bermy is small.Lets not forget that as nice as children can be they can also be cruel add to that gossipy parents and you have a child that is messed up for life without treatment.

People know what they are doing in these situations let them do their jobs.

    • yess says:

Children should be aware that this type of behavior is wrong! Name and shame and make an example.

    • Oh,I see now says:

sexually exploiting does NOT mean he had sex with her you brainless uneducated twits it could be something as simple as posting a picture of her in her bikini. Stop with your ignorant LOW IQs it insults the rest of us. Im not supporting this man in no way OBVIOUSLY just setting forth COMMON SENSE and not barbaric mindless tribal animosity

How does your foot taste,I bet it needs a little salt and pepper with a glass of Clueless Beer to wash it down.

  16. HOTDOG says:

Hope when they lock him up they beat the s*** out of him in prison

  17. Trulytruly says:

Terrible. He will be joining another ex police officer up there at westgate put away for 35 years a few years ago for the same kind of crime.

  18. NO MORE WAR says:

I personally think this individual should be named. It is public record and he should not be getting no pass. The people that know his daughter, I’m sure they already know.

With that said, the people that compare this man to the majority of the police service, Shane on you.

    • Verly says:

Why does he need to be named? What purpose would that serve other than to satisfy the curiosity of pokey Bermudian? Justice has been served, and hopefully his daughter is receiving intensive therapy.
Having said that, I have known this individual all of his life and I’m still in shock. Goes to show we never really know people as much as we think we do.

  19. NO MORE WAR says:

    *shame

  20. LegalMind says:

People calling for this sick person to be named are- for want of a better term- ignorant. Did you not read the same article?- it was his daughter- not a stranger. Name him and the shame falls on her. Not because she deserves to be shamed, she is a brave, brave young lady- but we know how cruel humans can be- especially on this Island!!!

    • Jonah says:

There are many cruel humans on many island and most countries…Bermuda just happens to be one of them…

      • Self says:

The difference is Bermuda is a smaller community, where most people know each other. In larger areas it’s easier to retain your privacy.

        • yess says:

These molestation cases seem to be happen frequently, wouldn’t naming and shaming alert the public and CHILDREN that this behavior is wrong and to speak to someone?

Think about all the kids this IS happening to that will never get any professional help because they don’t know it is wrong/are scared to speak up about it.

  21. N says:

I Can understand the identity for the daughter (which is sooo horrid poor girl) but its too bad because he needs his …….. handed to him! ARGH

I hope this girl gets much support and growth to pass this horrible situation. I am soo sorry and saddened to read this and pray that she heal somehow.

If you ever do come out; be strong. Support IS There! Use IT; try your best not to hide inside (the pain) and know that its not your fault!!!

  22. BYE WHAT DE HECK BYE! says:

    • Oh no says:

      What is sexual exploitation?
      host.jibc.ca/seytoolkit/what.htm
Sexual exploitation is the sexual abuse of children and youth through the exchange of sex or sexual acts for drugs, food, shelter, protection, other basics of life, and/or money. Sexual exploitation includes involving children and youth in creating pornography and sexually explicit websites.

      Also

      incest

      Tweet noun in·cest \ˈin-ˌsest\
: sexual intercourse between people who are very closely related

    • Islander says:

If you believe that’s all he done then your IQ isn’t that high either. Trying to justify that is unbelievable.

    • PBanks says:

Um, ‘convicted of incest’ most assuredly does mean sexual activity, so try not to insult the various commentators in this article with “brainless uneducated twits” and similar dialogue.

This case is disturbing enough without people insulting each other in the discussion areas.

    • DoNotSpeakOnThingsYouHaveNoClueAbout says:

The article states incest. I know the facts as I know those involved… Seems like other posters and myself all are on the same page and know what we are talking about; clearly you don’t, nor do you read things in their entirety. You should take your own advise and refrain from ASSuming things. It is you who is insulting us with YOUR evidently low IQ. Enjoy the rest of your day.

    • Rhonnie aka BlueFamiliar says:

Common sense is not nearly as common as one might expect. Because of that, allow me to share this.

Sexual exploitation of young person by a person in a position of trust

      182(B)

      1. A person who, being in a position of trust or authority towards a young person or being a person with whom a young person is in a relationship of dependency

    • Anbu says:

Do u know what incest is? Whos ignorant with a low iq? Jacka**. Read the damn article before shooting off your brainless uneducated twit mouth! Incest is having sexual realations with your blood relatives. Hows that foot taste?

    • Real talk (original) says:

Look up the meaning of the word “incest” and holla back.

    • yess says:

Listen here you illiterate swine before you jump down all the brainless uneducated twits throats, did you even read this article?????? INCEST.

“The Supreme Court yesterday convicted a 37 year old man for incest. The court found that the man had sexually exploited his daughter while in a position of trust.”

Incest: (noun) Sexual relations between people classed as being too closely related to marry each other. The crime of having sexual intercourse with a parent, child, sibling, or grandchild.

Please read more carefully and stop defending a man who HAD SEXUAL RELATIONS WITH HIS DAUGHTER.

  23. Who's Askin' Jus' Askin' says:

I whole heartedly believe in “Name and Shame” ESPECIALLY in cases regarding children!!!!!

    • A Ming says:

The poor young lady has been humiliated enough, do you seriously think that she wants to be further exposed. People especially other young people can be very cruel if they are armed with knowledge such as this. She has already been embarrassed enough. The perp has been found guilty and will be punished just leave at that. Can’t you understand exposing him would expose her? This would cause other children NOT to come forward and the whole concept of protecting the victim would go out of the window.

  24. TMI says:

This is a bad bad thing, I feel for the victim, her mind is f@#$%! for life. It has to be tough living a normal life being a victim of sexual molestation, assault, abuse and it must be 50 times worse from your own father. My heart goes out to her and her mom and the family of the convicted pedophile. So sad and twisted. But of course we are all commenting and saying he should get what he deserves and how much of an animal he is, but we must be cautious with our kids because this is one case were someone got found out. There are many many cases like this.. so many predators around us and we can only pray and be careful to monitor our kids’ behaviour. Another thing is I think if these faces were made known to the public, most of us wouldn’t be able to handle it. Alot of these people are ones we trust or respect and never expect them to be the kind to commit such heinous acts.

    • Sickofantz says:

Of course this child will remember this for the rest of her life but it does not have to ruin her life. She has been brave and strong and she has only done the right thing. She has the knowledge that she is blameless and innocent and the whole of Bermuda wants to see her succeed and get past this.

  25. Ladeej says:

This is a heatbreaking story and the worst part is that crimes like this are happening all too often on this little Island. I commend the young lady for being brave and also those who brought this case before the courts. The father is obviously a disgustingly sick individual who needs help. He needs psychological help for his pedophilia. I pray the daughter gets all the help and support that she needs to cope with the trauma he has caused.

  26. swing voter says:

I’m not a doctor, psychiatrist or have personally experience this tragic behavior, but there’s no cure for his behavior. Sad that otherwise right thinking perpetrators cannot seem to suppress these behaviors or at least protect the innocent against their own vile lusts…..

  27. Maddog says:

This is a 21 mile island people…..if you don’t already know who he is, you will in about 5 minutes…..be strong daughter, hold your head high and focus on the rest of your life….you did the right thing.

  28. Sosorry says:

Absolutely, Bermuda is small and although I just found about about the case; I already know his name. It is a very sad case. I feel disgusted that I thought he could be a role model for our young men. I feel very very sad for his daughter, how incredibly tough this had to be to stand trial and face him and know that you will be sending him to jail, she had to so torn but also have to live with the fact your own father did something very terrible to hurt you. A father is there to protect and love you and he failed horribly. I hope she gets the help, love and support she needs and also I hope he gets the help he needs. It’s easy for us to rip this man apart but this man is her father and I am sure hearing these names etc. will continue to hurt her. So we should be mindful for her sake. God bless her!

  29. drunken ursula says:

WOW…shame on you .blessings to the victim

  30. Flogg Him says:

Yeah.. He will probably get an 18 month sentence and be out in under a year.. while they will Jail a single mother for trying to provide for her children, so she makes a bad choice..For 4 years.. Welcome to the Justice System in Bermuda…

  31. Ray says:

I hope this poor child gets the help and support she needs to live a positive life going forward. As far as him getting the help he needs, f him. He is clearly a sociopath. He has obviously shown no remorse over the situation and clearly bares no guilt over what he has done. I wish they would let him loose in the general population up in West Gate so he can get what he truly deserves but that won’t happen.

  32. right..... says:

he’ll get what he deserves when he goes to prison, they don’t like diddlers there!!
