   Given all the buildup prior to the planned two day America’s Cup event, one would have thought that the viewer count would have been at least 100 times higher. That would have meant 7.3 million viewers. Even ten times higher would mean 730,000 viewers.

   73,000 is abjectly disappointing.

   Must wait now for the other numbers (like special visitor arrivals) for the event.. I’ll live in hope, but not in Wonderland.

     This just from one country and doesn’t include the significant numbers who streamed the event.

     As well as being on BT sport in the Uk, part coverage of the event was purchased by the BBC who included it in several bits of their news programming as well as BBC world.

     So actually I think your 10x figure is a little conservative.

   TV coverage (or rather lack of) is a serious problem with this “international” event. None of my iinternaitonal family or friends have seen it. It wasn’t on TV unless you buy the app. Not good for the sponsors selling rights in the way they did. And locally the Gothenburg coverage is still on a loop. Still haven’t actually viewed it! Hopefully the sponsors will demand more coverage.

       I didn’t have to buy the app, I downloaded it and got the FREE promotional code FOR BERMUDIANS at the event village on Front st.

   Hmm I don’t recall seeing it on sports center or bbc news Monday morning….how unfortunate hopefully we do get the coverage for the next races ooooor back to the drawing board.

   Passengers arriving on Monday’s cruise ship in Dockyard, when queried, stated they had no knowledge of the event. Guess they didn’t have a TV link on board either. One man thought this was the main race scheduled for 2017. Evidently, the cruise ship did not promote the race and its association with Bermuda through their hospitality department, responsible, no less, for daily newsletters, delivered to each cabin,detailing activities and port-of-call information. Shops in Dockyard who depend almost solely on the cruise ships will have a hard sell in 2016 if ships do not educate their passengers to the presence of America’s Cup and it’s importance to the island. A thought provoking question: how many of the cruise ship passengers we get have any knowledge about America’s Cup? Would they watch it in preference to American football? You already know the answer.

     Regarding their lack of knowledge about the event . Hardly surprising . When I once worked with them (cruise ship passengers) the majority of them got off the boats thinking they were in the Bahamas !

   Viewer numbers don’t matter as much as who is viewing. Like golf which has very few TV viewers but have most of the wealth. The few people watching high end sailing events are rich as hell and they’re the visitors we want.

     Golf viewership is down but saying it has a similar TV viewership as the Americas Cup is just false.
     The 2015 Masters Golf tournament pulled in TV ratings of 8.6 million viewers in 6.4 million homes(which was the lowest rating since 1993)
     The 2015 US Open carried on Fox Sports drew 27 Million in advertising revenue for the 3 day event.

     There is much potential in the Americas Cup but the ACBDA and their marketing partner the BTA have much work to do.

       And a lower rated golf game gets 50,000 viewers. You can’t compare an AC qualifier with the US Open. It’s apples and oranges.
