November 22, 2015

The Bermuda Society of Interior Designers [BSID] is presenting a show of 27 wreaths that are being auctioned to raise funds to benefit the Coalition for the Protection of Children and the BSID Scholarship Fund.

The show, on exhibit just outside of Gibbons Home store in the upper level of the Washington Mall, features a range of creative one-of-a-kind wreaths, ranging from the traditional greenery-based “Festive Burlap” by Laura Miller to the eclectic “Wishy Washy” entry by Jashaé Pace.

BSID President Jill Henneberger said, “I am extremely pleased with the support received and impressed with the quality of the entrants this year.”

The judges, including Carol Outerbridge, Julie Mayor, and Sheelagh Cooper, were challenged with the task of selecting Best in Show, three Runners Up, and an Honorable Mention.

Carol Outerbridge, Owner of Pembroke Tile and Stone, said, “I was amazed by the creativity and effort shown in making the wreaths.”

Julie Mayor said, “I am always impressed with the thought process that goes behind those that make the wreaths, and this year is no exception. There were so many deserving entries that it made it very difficult to decide on the winning entry.”

“I hope that everyone will come and see the wreaths and place a bid, keeping in mind that the money raised will go to The Coalition for the Protection of Children and the BSID Scholarship Fund.”

A spokesperson said, “Winners will be presented at the close of the show on December 3rd Interior Designers provide their clients with the innovative interiors and progressive workplaces and use standards and codes that make their facilities ergonomically efficient, esthetically stimulating, and safe, environmentally friendly spaces.

“This knowledge requires a specialized degree from an accredited school and there are currently several Bermudian students studying the profession at recognized schools in the UK, Canada and via specialized remote programs.

“The Bermuda Society of Interior Designers supports their efforts with their Annual Scholarship that this show partly benefits. The Scholarship was launched in 1992 and has awarded over $130,000.00 since its inception.

“Chanika Jones a two time recipient of a Scholarship is pleased to support the professional designers who support her, she has created two wreaths this year for the Show and Auction.

“The Coalition for the Protection of Children has been chosen as the joint beneficiary for the third year in a row. The Coalition provides services which address critical but unmet needs of children and their families and ensures that all children grow up in a safe and nurturing environment.”

“This mission is complementary to the Interior Designers role as designers of safe and functional spaces for families, businesses and the community as well as their desire to support and mentor students.”

Sheelagh Cooper, Founder and Chair of the Coalition, was also a judge this year, and said, “I am hugely grateful to have been chosen for the third year in a row to be a beneficiary of the proceeds from the BSID Wreath Show and auction. I can attest that it was a very difficult job as all of the entries were amazingly beautiful and creative.

“The real winners are the children who come to school hungry in any one of the 9 schools where we supply breakfast every morning. So a big huge thank you to the society and all of the talented artist who took the time to create the wreaths.”

“In past years wreaths have fetched well over $350 with the last few hours of the auction seeing bidding wars for favorite wreaths. For this reason Jill Henneberger suggests placing your highest bid early and watch bidding carefully to insure you get the wreath you want. Bids have been placed on many wreaths already.”

Bidding continues until 7.00pm on December 3 and bids can be placed in the book at the exhibition or via the BSID Facebook page. For more information, email info@bsid.bm or visit the BSID website.
