Updates: PLP’s Diallo Rabain Wins By-Election
[Updating: The PLP's Diallo Rabain has won] Voters are heading to the polls today [Feb 4] for the by-election in Constituency 13 Devonshire North Central, with Diallo Rabain standing for the PLP, while Andrew Simons is the OBA candidate.
The by-election was prompted by the retirement of PLP MP Glenn Blakeney, who submitted his resignation letter to the Speaker of the House, confirming his retirement effective December 7th of last year.
Past Election Results For Devonshire North Central
In the 2012 General Election, Mr Blakeney defeated the OBA’s C. Anthony Francis by a margin of 19 votes, winning 51.18% of the vote [411 votes], while Mr Francis won 48.82% of the vote [392 votes].
In the 2007 General Election Mr Blakeney won 53.52% of the vote vs the UBP’s Albertha Waite, and in the 2003 General Election Mr Blakeney won 57.22% of the vote vs the UBP’s Hilary Soares.
Elections held prior to 2003 were held under a different system than we have now, with Devonshire divided into two areas [Devonshire North and Devonshire South] with both constituencies electing two MPs.
Past election results show that under the two-MP system, Devonshire North voters elected PLP MPs, while Devonshire South residents voted in UBP MPs.
Devonshire is now divided into four constituencies [Devonshire North West, Devonshire North Central, Devonshire South, Devonshire East] with all four constituencies electing one MP.
Since the one MP system was implemented in the 2003 General Election, Devonshire North Central has elected a PLP MP three times.
Plp safe seat, no big deal!
A win by 17 votes is a safe seat??
A win by one vote is a WIN
By the overall results it shows the OBA sucks so bad. Really really.. you lost to Mark Bean lololol. Now imagine how many seats you will give back to the PLP when he’s not leader for the 2017 election.
The OBA’s best bet is to pay Mark under the table to stay as leader because the 2000 job promise and we have a plan for guns was a political lie. Politricks
Final votes Mr Rabain 461, Mr Simons 351 OMG.
The Premier Michael Dunkley needs to repeat his words again, “what a waste of f****** film”
LMFAO
Yes and he needs to apologize to Mrs. Swan. You may recall he only said sorry to the Mr. Starling and Mr. Swan. That too will come back to bite them next election because we females have not forgotten your immature stance.
hAHA!!
A win is a win!!! Congratulations, Mr. Rabain!!!!!! Yahoo!!
It was previously a win of 19 votes. Thursday, February 4th the margin widened to a win by 110. This sends a clear message that the OBA is in trouble. What are they going to do with about their leader? Their leader and cabinet ministers are not moving this country forward.
How can you call it a safe seat? The PLP won the last election by 19 votes?
for you and inna – the reason there was a difference of less than 20 votes was because a good number of the voters stayed away. In protest of the PLP but not to support the OBA
Should not be. A vote for Rabain is a vote for Bean. Is that good for Bermuda?
Bean can always be voted out.
A vote for Rabain is vote for PLP not Bean. It is not Bean’s turn tonight.
Absolutely..
Bean 461 Dunkley 351
Nothing is “safe” anymore. Simply Standing Strong does not make an educated public feel they are getting value.
That is a very good point. People are starting to see through the PLP posturing and fake propaganda image of Standing Strong.
At hmmm: Please don’t be offended,(anyone)but what’s that saying we often hear people mention, “it’s so obvious that even Lance Hayward could see through it…”
People are seeing through both parties
Standing Strong against what precisely? I always wondered that.
PARTY POOPER!!!!!
..to WillSee – best not to count your chickens until they are hatched ! LOL !
In the 2012 election, the difference was only 18 votes out 803.
This time it will be higher because more people will vote and vote plp.
I am not necessariy a Plp supporter either
Lol that sh** kills me every time. I’m a Manchester United supporter til the day they lay me in a box 6 feet under a limestone enclosure. See the thing is I don’t pay United to run the island I live on, don’t pay them to create an environment that attracts business which in turn creates much needed jobs. I don’t pay them to make and adjust laws in my island, I don’t pay them to increase the standard of living of the people on my island. What little I do pay them is to be entertained watching them on TV or in a stadium while I sit on my ass. I don’t support a political party. I will vote for the one that has mine and my people’s best interest at heart and so far I’m not fu***** entertained by either team.
Furthermore if anyone supports a specific political party it is that very party that has the power, not you. When they know they have an unwavering and undying support it is they that have the power not you.
Tell this to the OBA [Enblock Voters]
I voted for PLP in 98!
I voted not for PLP ever since !
I want what is best for Bermuda and Bermudians, in 1998 it was PLP, at each election since it was NOT PLP.
This is the beginning of U.B.P.’s fall back into Davy Jones Locker.
I have to make my position abundantly clear.I will be voting P.L.P in this election or any other election as I have done since 1963 when my Party was formed in Rio Richardson’s Garage,Serpentine Road,Pembroke Parish I will vote if they run a dog with a case of distemper and progressive Alzheimer disease.I vote Party ,not candidate.Best of British luck to both candidates.Peace.
So you would vote the same way if they “run a dog with a case of distemper and progressive Alzheimer disease”.
You obviously won’t have any trouble voting for Bean then.
“I will vote if they run a dog with a case of distemper and progressive Alzheimer disease”.
then you’re a dummy lmfao!!
Such an enlightened perspective.
So your vote means nothing. very sad
Although I understand to some degree why somebody would vote for their particular party rather than candidate, there’s a big downside to that. In traditional stronghold areas especially, it leaves the candidates with zero desire to actually work for their constituents. If you knew you were always going to be paid whether or not you did the work, could you honestly say that you would continue to perform at the same level? I think not. Time for some fresh ideas and somebody who is not afraid of hard work. Good luck to both candidates but, considering that Diallo had people canvassing for him when they hit my house and Andrew actually bothered to show in person, I already know who I think is more deserving of votes.
What you’re voting for is not the same entity you voted for in 63…what started in Rio Richardsons garage has mutated from meaningful to menacing…but thanks for your honesty…not that it helps the situation Bermuda is in any.
So sad. Even worse, there are many who think the same way. Government performance means nothing to you.
If that’s the case then the performance of the present government should be alarming!!!
Given the direction we were headed prior to 12/12 where do you think Bermuda would be today had the PLP been put back in?
For a start all of those tourist property developments that were sitting on a shelf & being acted upon today would still be sitting on hold till the voters got some sense & voted a stable Government in.
Stable!!!!!!, you mean horse stable because the voters found out that U.B.P. are full of S!@#.
LMFAO
You were the CEO of a large company and has run it to the ground. You were fired and the Board, after assessing applicants has hired me now. I have promised to turn the company around by reducing debt and increasing profits.
2 years into my contract not only have I not decreased debt but I have actually doubled it, all the while giving concessions to my rich associates that plunge the company into further debt. I take money that was meant to help with the betterment of my employees in order to finance a party for some of the worlds richest people. I take one of my main money earners and just give it away to new people I just met (and I didn’t even run it past my board to see if anybody else wanted it before i gave it away).
AND after all of this, when the board is asking questions about my weak performance, I just tell them in my whiny voice “It’s all the last CEO’s fault, It’s all his fault.
Needless to say, I was fired.
You are right, so many OBA/UBP supporters would never in their life vote for the PLP, nor will any of their future Generations, nor did any of their past relatives. The fact is, if it were not for some PLP voters changing their vote, the OBA would not have been elected.
If there was ever a time for an OBA supporter to change their vote to PLP it was the last election , when the OBA fielded the least experienced group of candidates that many people had never even heard of. So combined with some PLP supporters willingness to change and the never support the others attitude of the OBA followers, the OBA was able to eke out a victory by the smallest of margins. And to this day they all act like they won by a landslide.
How quickly people forget that in Dec 2012 Bermuda was staring into the abyss and that we were six months away from bankruptcy.
Yes the abyss the OBA has managed to steer us away from you mean? Looking at the numbers we are worse off now given the continued borrowing and their cowardice to make hard financial choices…
Please quit it with your tired old OBA playbook storylines…
BERMUDA IS IN MORE DEBT NOW THAN EVER. GET IT? One at some point have to look at the current administration and hold them to account. I do realize that this situation will take years to turn around. What is sad is that the current admin. is doing nothing new. No new thinking. They are keeping the status quo quite nicely are they not? No new economic tiers to develop, more borrowing than incoming revenues…that abyss you mentioned? Sounds a lot like the past admin. just dressed in red…
Which begs the question…what the hell use is any government nowadys…all across western civilization governments are accruing historical debt figures. It is hard to find a government that has not saddled its citizenry with this plague…England United States France Italy Greece Portugal on and on and on.
When will we finally look to the true source of our debt based shackles?
Can you imagine where we would be if the P.L.P remained in power ( with the glide slope we were on )?
Wow.
Your position IS abundantly clear as in you’re an idiot!
And why should we care who you vote for, Takbir?
SMH
@TKS Then you are what is called the “DUMB VOTE”!
And in making your bold statement, you have demonstrated just how you, and by extension anybody in either party that thinks and operates like you, have failed your responsibility to democracy and to the rights and freedoms so many have fought for, and continue to fight for as we try to to evolve our society to a better state. You’ve become the anti-1963PLP.
Wonder how brother Phil feels about PLP nowadays cause it was clear how he felt under Ewart Brown.
It’s ok for the majority of white’s to vote U.B.P. regardless the state of the party, but when it comes to Blacks voting for P.L.P there has to be a flawless sign from Heaven.
Social conditioning at its best.
Hello! I don’t know why we even pay these people any attention…smh
Dog Gone Fool
Where exactly is this building?
Turn up Roberts Avenue, the building behind the National Stadium
Mr. Rabain, you’re not supposed to fasten the bottom button!
Or wear the same suit and bowtie as the one in the poster he is standing next to.
He could’ve wore a sweat suit, would’ve it made a difference in the results.
Sad
How stupid! WTH do you think that button is there for?
Uh… that comment… why?
I hope that there is no nonsense like the last Bi election in Somerset!
May the best man win!
You mean when the OBA foreign born Bermudian cried her poor eyes out after losing ?
An old song from the 50′s comes to mind……………..”daylight come; me wanna go home”.
Time for change.
Shalom.
I don’t see any pictures of the Opposition Leader Marc Bean. Hmmm…
I was just up there and Marc Bean was flanked by his deputies. What a sour individual.
I really hope Andrew Simons wins. Yes the OBA has been messy but no I don’t think they are nefarious or a failure like the PLP/BIU would have you know.
At the Age Concern event, Andrew gave very nuanced, measured responses to the questions posed to him as opposed to the fluff and misinformation that the PLP candidate delivered.
Good luck, Andrew!
Yes Mr Simons promised to represent seniors. It is unfortunate that they haven’t been given due respect under the OBA Government.
The OBA was left with the responsibility of letting our seniors know that all the money they had been puttin into this country was wasted away, with little to none left for them. Who’s worse, the messengers, or the people responsible for the rotten message.
Voting for Andrew… good luck! We need to see change.
Well, no vote for OBA as I’m ticked at this Bob Richards airport push on the people of Bermuda “WITHOUT GOING THROUGH THE PROPER TENDERING SELECTION PROCESS” then they claim to be “OPEN AND TRANSPARENT” Bull sh!t. They also preached that 2,000 jobs would be created and Bermudians still have difficulty with finding jobs and who are qualified, but NON BERMUDIANS get some of those jobs. WHY???? No scrutinization by the immigration department.
PLP also lose my vote (yes I know I can only vote for one) because as long as Marc Bean is Opposition Leader I will not vote labor. By the way, I voted PLP when they came to power for CHANGE and here are today with much of the same bull sh!t.
I’m a 55 year white male in this constituency who’s fed up with BS
More Bermudians need to speak their minds at the polls.
So who u gonna vote for?
Nice try pal !! your full of horse road apples !! Build the airport OBA ! Don`t listen to empty barrels like this guy!
You do realize that any party leader can be gone at any time right?
They went through the proper processes, they got permission from the Accountant Gerneral, and to date, this has been the most open government undertaking going back decades. More Bermudians need to use their minds before speaking them. Since this process is still under negotiation, information can not be released until is has been agreed to by both parties, and what has been released to date has proven any wrong doing, just that the government is pressing ahead with a project that will generate needed jobs, replace an infrastructure that has past its expiration date and develop something that gives anybody who arrives in our country the impression that we are in fact the first class destination for tourism and business that we advertise ourselves as.
I guess ya gonna vote for Trump.
LMFAO
I have enough confidence in the labour Movement and the working class people of Bermuda to know that we can run this Government and this Country if all the personalities were changed. And we will ,eventually.Any bets.????? I dont gamble but I will give my winnings to all the people that have been stolen from, dis -enfranchised,dis- respected, discriminated against, discouraged, and disgusted with the way so called U.B.P/O.B.A.or before the party system was formed Forty Thieves and the like behaved.Finished, out, goodby, hasta lavista, see ya.Peace.
boom!
The airport hasn’t even been designed as yet but this Aecon Company put a $300,000,000.00 bid in.?
What is this bid even based on other than thinking Bermuda is rich and we the people will just accept it and pay anything.
Ask Bob if he will have a contractor put a build in to build his house and the plans havent been drawn up. So easy to spen other peoples money.
I just switched my vote back to PLP. So disappointed in you OBA. I was so willing to give you a chance. And with this guarantee that has been given, this building could cost $500,000,000.00 and we the taxpayer will, have to pick up the cost. Where is this difference from what the PLP were doing?
If this doesnt smell of cronyism then I don’t know what is.
But for sure they must be covering all their all their bets and charging twice as much as what it may actually cost to construct.
This has to be put out to tender or it will forever be tainted.
What are you on. The whole point of the contract is that CCC is paying for it, and in return they manage it and receive the revenue for the next 35 years. The whole point of this is so that no taxpayers dollars are spent, so I don’t know where you got that from. And if there is any cost overruns CCC or Aecon pay for it, not Bermuda.
Pele read up on everything there is, review with like projects, study up on how contracts are negotiated… everything you have asserted in your statement has been answered or disproved and anybody who has lived in this country for the last century can tell you that tendering the project won’t garauntee making it free from taint, in faint pretty much every tender in recent history has been tainted. The only thing that will garauntee us value for money will be a solid build to contract.
by the first results ! it only shows how much people like pain and suffering no doubt misery loves company!!!!!
No it shows how bad the OBA is. Blaming the PLP will not work next election, maybe placing a black man or woman as the OBA leader may work.
Two hours to count 400 votes! Pretty well sums up the dire straights Education is in. No wonder 10.000 expats are needed to help the economy.
They are looking for loose chaffs.
Maybe the numbers are Fuzzied.
LMFAO
Youre either a foreigner or one of those “status holders” who make it easy for one to make the distinction between a REAL BERMUDIAN and a PAPER BERMUDIAN. The latter is always first to insult and throw the former under the bus because fact is, despite that piece of paper that does little more than speak to the amount of time they’ve enjoyed the lifestyle here, theyre just as foreign as the ones hopping straight off the boat (plane)… People like you are not the real countrymen of this land. You just want to shape it too your liking as your ancestors have done for centuries, spreading throughout the world imposing your ways like an invasive cancer.
I couldn’t have said it better Ian! Spot on! Bermudians are not Caymanians.. We will not sit by and let you over run this country where the opinions of the Bermudian no longer matter…or that you speak about us in any fashion. If you chose to come here to live or to work, you had better show respect to Bermudians, especially when it comes to the direction they would like to see the country go.
With today’s technology, calculating votes should be instantaneous. Somebody fix this before the next general election or referendum.
Get your cash into $U.S.and keep a real estate agent close at hand.
Wow… all that? Yet you wouldnt say that when reinsurance companies are laying off folks every 5 minutes as the industry continues to consolidate huh? You’re just as deluded as those republican supporters in America who thrive on misinformation and care little for facts so long as the message is consistent with their disgusting prejudices…
This is exactly how they think… Leave umm..
“They”.
That paints your portrait. Say no more.
I’ll be prepared if these guys get a second chance. If you choose not to be we’ll see who’s delusional.
There’s nothing wrong with prejudice derived from facts or record. We all come up with them and act accordingly. Don’t try and present yourself differently.
What I find most interesting is the number of people who use nom de plumes.false names or identities and expletives like Lol,LmaA.smh, and other cowardly tactics to hide behind ,deceitful worms ,afraid to say a word straight to the point or speak what is truly on their hearts and mind. They are the most despicable people and untrustworthy snakes on the planet Earth. The Holy Quran describes them as Iblis,THE DEVIL, SHAITAIN,Satan, the Serpent, etc. Though the polytheists be averse.Peace.Soon Come.
I told young Simons to stay away from politics . The UBP/BDA/OBA crowd urged him forward , but they weren’t the ones taking the licks in the ring !
Now maybe a wiser more seasonally whooped Andrew Simons will flinch every time some one even mentions the thought of putting his name on any ballot .
Congratulations Diallo !!! Took him out in round one by TKO !
Congrats Rabain…good job!
90 huge votes !!!!
Thanks Glen Blakney for your service ! But much more importantly , Thank you for stepping down !
Big thanks to Mark Bean …. The Leader of the PLP !!!
I counted 110
Polarization! Sent a message. Go ahead; call a snap election.
Quo Fata Ferunt
Victory for the PLP and the people of Bermuda and now on to the finale battle to regain the government and liberate Bermuda for it’s people.
They just voted for a guy who advocated spending taxpayer money on giving seniors water instead of medicine. Seriously.
” Symbolically buried ” all seniors !
And there you have it.. I wonder where all those swing voters swung this time? If this Gov’t continues as they are, they will get obliterated in the next election…
Rabin… Congrats to you, your mom and family on your victory and hope too see you progress more within the PLP
Go PLP on a victory well deserved
PLP all the way!!!
And the complete collapse of Bermuda as a result. Good work.
And this right here is the mentality that will see this Island never move forward.. The people of Devonshire have spoken! They do not like the OBA and their policies.. Should they just shut up and not be heard… Based on your comment their opinion should not matter correct?
I told you all it was a safe seat
If people don’ like the OBA, that’s fine. But I don’t get why people want the party who increased all the all the debt, job loss and crime back in power.
The PLP were so messed up that they were buying themselves special MP cars and houses.
UBP left Bermuda half a million when PLP took over, they put us 2 billion in negative.
PLP increased racial tension between white and black Bermudians that would have otherwise been brothers.
The caused huge foreign companies that employ Bermudians to leave the island.
Nothing good happened while they were in power.
If you don’t like the OBA, I can understand. But if you support a party that lined their own pockets for 20 years while Bermuda crumbled, then you just dont care about the facts or the future of your country. You just care about your own team winning.
Couldn’t have said it better. People have very short memories and forget where we were in Dec 2012 when our island was 6 months away from bankruptcy and a level of debt that even our grandchildren will able to get out of.
Stupidity knows no bounds.
Angry much? just wait a bit longer. lol
Ubp/oba wont be around past 2017
To the Victor, go the spoils . Mr. Rabain won a great victory. CONGRATS. Both candidates worked hard, and I hope they had a good time meeting the constituents of Devonshire North Central # 13 .
Interesting contrast between the before and after comments.
Chris, What’s up? I never spoke out against Mr. Rabain. I always sent congrats to both candidates. A win is a win, and the PLP won. Is everything a fight or a argument? It was a clean , well fought election.
First of all congratulations to the Party that was Founded in Rio Richardson’s Garage on Serpentine Road in Pembroke Parish.Congratulations to Moses Allen{interesting name.}and all other founding members for parting the red sea, congratulations to all P.L.P.supporters,constituents and members who stayed with the Party and never deserted, remained faithful to the end.Congratulations to Mr.Rabain.my candidate of choice.Thank you to the O.B.A.for flogging our backsides since 2012 and opening our eyes to who the devils really are and making us more determined to Be the Government ever after,P.L.P ,,Peoples Party.Peace.
The mind boggles at the fact that anyone would still vote PLP after they left us with a debt of $2B, a bloated civil service and all the serious malfeasance and corruption highlighted in the recent Auditor’s Report. All factual information. The irony of it all is the very people voting PLP are the ones who sadly, will suffer the most should they ever get elected again. “To know the road ahead, ask those who are coming back.” Bermuda, we’re all still just coming back and will be for years to come thanks to the damage we were all left with
There are no losers today as Bermuda witnessed two very capable people vie for a job and the Most educated and experienced got the job. This is as it should be. To Andrew don’t give up many people have run several times before getting elected. I applaud your willingness to serve but on this day the people have spoken and we must all accept it.
OBAers take a lose just like Trump….
Rhonda, we’re all losers here
Boggles my mind that people still vote PLP after almost bankrupting this Island, who when they took over from the UBP was in the black. I’m starting to think its not about ‘what’s best for Bermuda’ but more of ‘my family has always voted PLP so I will too’. Wake up!! We cannot survive another PLP government.
My guess is that Rabian won not on issues like crime such as gang shootings and unemployment or kids going to school hungry, I think he won because of the color of his skin, that’s because of how small minded people are here in Bermuda they see color first, and everything else last.
I see two winners here…both for being there ready to try.
