Video: Beyond Rugby Shares Powerful Stories
Over the past week, Bermuda hosted the Atlantic Rugby Cup, an event that aims to raise money for youth rugby on the island. Beyond Rugby, a programme that targets and taps into the unrealized potential of vulnerable youth, was one of the main recipients of this fundraising event.
To share with the broader community what the programme is accomplishing, and why this is important, a video was produced. The video takes an in-depth look into the lives of a few Beyond Rugby players. These young men share a few of their powerful personal stories and speak to how the Beyond Rugby progamme has impacted their lives Beyond the Field.
Martha Dismont, Family Centre’s Executive Director, said: “This video sums up what Beyond Rugby is all about. When rugby inspires youth to commit and when a programme breaks all barriers to ongoing participation this is what you see; you see young people overcoming obstacles, tapping into their passion and talents and visualizing a bright future.”
The three youth who share their stories in this video are Chiquon Smith, Danekco Cann Hayward, and Raguel Dill.
Darren Woods, one of the Beyond Rugby programme leads, stated, “I am so proud of these young men for being so bold and owning their own stories. Sharing them in their truth and entirety takes courage and sharing them with our community deserves a tremendous amount of respect.”
Beyond Rugby combines the coaching expertise of the Bermuda Rugby Football Union [BRFU] with the therapeutic skill of Family Centre staff to attract some of the highest-risk youth and achieve high levels of commitment and engagement required to help youth and families make lasting positive changes in their lives.
The success of this programme is largely due to the passion of the team working for the kids, and the ongoing commitment of donors.

This is such a good organization. Rugby, IMO, offers – and maintains – values that few, if any, other sports match.
There no cry babies faking injuries, no chat back to the ref, they play hard and party hard, they respect each other and the players in other teams.
They don’t leave the field looking like they had just walked onto the field straight from the hair salon.
Keep up the good work!
Great job. I hope more at risk young men follow suit.
Such an incredible program – the team involved in Beyond Rugby are heaven sent. Thank you all for everything you do for Bermuda’s youth.
