Omnibus Survey: OBA Hold Lead Among Voters

July 26, 2016

[Updated] According to the TRA’s Bermuda Omnibus® survey the OBA [39%] “continues to hold a clear lead among eligible voters” compared with support for the PLP [21%], and a “call for unity among the people outshines economic concerns for the first time as the perceived biggest challenge for Government.”

In releasing the survey results, TRA said: “While the bulk of decided voters continue to support the OBA, a focus on uniting Bermuda has surfaced this year.

“The One Bermuda Alliance [OBA] continues to hold a clear lead among eligible voters [39%] compared with support for the Progressive Labour Party [PLP, 21%].

“While one third of those eligible to vote are undecided, refuse to state their voting intentions, or do not intend to vote [33%], the OBA’s advantage over the opposition is even stronger among decided voters [58%].

“Among both eligible and decided voters, support is divided by race and income, with the PLP being the preferred party among black voters and lower income earners.

“In light of the controversy associated with the Pathways to Status Initiative as well as recent labour unrest, residents have turned their focus to the Island’s political climate.

“Indeed, a call for unity among the people outshines economic concerns for the first time as the perceived biggest challenge for Government. Meanwhile, a lack of accountability, unemployment, and a perceived rise in crime are also highlighted as key issues warranting attention in the coming months.

“These results are part of TRA’s Bermuda Omnibus®, a syndicated quarterly survey of public opinion in Bermuda, and are based on a telephone sample of 400 adults [18 years of age or older], conducted from June 15th to June 28th, 2016.

“Overall results accurate to within ± 4.9 percentage points, 95 out of 100 times. Results reflect popular voting intention, and are not analysed based on constituency.”

Update 5.19pm: In response, a PLP spokesperson said, “The Progressive Labour Party is more interested in standing strong for the interests of Bermudians and working to make Bermuda a better place, than analysing specific polls.

“Our goal has always been to connect with voters on the doorstep and to ensure the peoples’ views are heard. Over the past 4 years, the OBA leadership has repeatedly disrespected the Bermuda electorate, while we in the PLP remain focused on being an advocate for our community.

“While this poll may appear to have the OBA enjoying a significant lead, the sentiments we are receiving on the doorstep are quite different. The people of Bermuda are tired of leadership that is media driven but providing little benefit for the broader community. They are tired of leaders who through their actions continue to show blatant disregard to the voters who elected them.”

  4. San George says:

A one seat majority is not exactly a clear lead. Let’s go to the polls mate to see if the OBA agree. There will never be a super-majority in the HoA again; both parties will have to govern according to the Emancipation Act 1834 – we are all equal.

In the normal common sense concept, yes we are all equal.

You want harmony in Bermuda…you want to unite all people of Bermuda? Then do not vote for the OBA or PLP…you wont get anything but more racial divide and hate! Time for a third party or a vote of no confidence in either party! Only problem…people don’t care about their country only their party. It’s always been party before country…and when we get past that, maybe we can move forward together.

So the OBA hold a 2:1 advantage over the PLP eh?
Lets try that out at the polling stations.

    Who conducts these polls?

  11. Vote for progress says:

The only option is a vote for the OBA. We cannot possibly go backwards with the progress being made.

  12. Rich says:

I’d be more interested in seeing what past polls using the same methodology have said. A poll is just a snapshot. But if we had multiple polls which we can track over time, then we can start seeing trend-lines. For example, if the last survey had the OBA at a higher number, then this result should be worrying. But if it had the OBA at a lower one, then obviously a move in a positive direction for them.
