“Discussions Continue” With Corrections Officers
Following the sit-out today by some Corrections Officers to protest working conditions, the Ministry of National Security said “discussions continue at this hour between the Prison Officers Association and the management of the Department of Corrections and it is hoped that some resolution will be achieved shortly.”
A Ministry of National Security spokesperson said, “The Ministry has been kept fully abreast of the issues surrounding the work-related action at Westgate Correctional Facility today.
“Discussions continue at this hour between the Prison Officers Association and the management of the Department of Corrections and it is hoped that some resolution will be achieved shortly.
“The facility has been secured throughout this impasse and save for an inability to attend some scheduled programmes, inmates have been minimally impacted.”
The Minister of National Security Jeffrey Baron said, “It is good that the Prison Officers Association and management are talking and I am confident that the issues can be satisfactorily addressed.
“I wish to thank those officers who have lent their support to the continued running of Westgate and encourage the ongoing dialogue to be open and productive.”

Another Minister collecting a paycheque for nothing.
I think that sit down sends a message that conditions need to be improved, and further to this is the fact that some situations have not been addressed adequately for some time. Thanks to all prison officers, on duty as well as off duty. Some one has to say enough is enough, and I sense the officers realise that the prison must remain secure while talks are on-going.
These concerns appear to be about safety issues in the workplace. With a job like that I believe it should be a number one issue for the ministry to address expeditiously.
