Govt: ‘Hopeful That Resolution Can Be Reached’

September 14, 2016

Discussions with the Prison Officers Association continue, the Ministry of National Security said this afternoon, adding that “progress is being made” and they are “hopeful that a resolution can be reached.”

This follows after some Corrections Officers began a sit-out yesterday to protest working conditions.

A Ministry of National Security spokesperson said, “In providing a brief update regarding the current Corrections Officers’ dispute at the Westgate Correctional Facility, the Ministry of National Security can confirm that discussions with the Prison Officers Association resumed this morning and continue.

“The Ministry notes that progress is being made and is hopeful that a resolution can be reached. As it currently stands, senior staff are managing the facilities, inmates have and will continue to be attended to and all units are secured.

“Additionally, the transporting of inmates to court is running as normal. The Ministry will update accordingly as information becomes available.”

Yet they would spend $250,000 to fix up a building while also renting a building for Fahy who refuses to work in back-o-town because de office at TCD is too plush !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Oh Please says:

I wonder if you understand that the officers at West Gate are making an extra 2500+ a month overtime on their $4500 monthly salary. When they get back to a basic pay check they will be telling the OBA they can’t survive on a normal check. Those who know… know ;) Hire more officers and cut the overtime lets see them complain then. Highest paid corrections officers in the World.

        don’t feed the troll…. in other news…..

      • Unanimous says:

No, that’s not true. We can attest that the basic flat pay is with three dependents, 3700 take home, which is nothing on this island. Overtime is not always available. And with that kind of income with one member of the family bringing in money you need overtime which brings you to possibly around 5000 if you’re lucky. But it’s not always consistent. Though this is not the reason they are upset. Even though I am, as a wife of a corrections officer trying to keep our families head above water.

Meanwhile, oh please, get do your research! We live on very inflated priced island. These officers are not getting paid any inflation rates at all. These guys have had no raise or contract for years. Sorry, about three years ago they got a minimal raise and then had the furlough days introduced which took away the raise and more money out, then once furlough days were introduced GEHI went up, but GEHI is now paying less out for our medical expense. The raise before that was about 9 years before that. Please do some research before you comment so ignorantly. But like I said they aren’t even fighting over that. So why comment something irrelevant?

  2. Say Whaat? says:

Why does government want to build a helipad on the prison grounds?!?

    • Just the Tip says:

Has this been confirmed by news sources as being true or is this just a “Well my friend’s, brother’s cousin’s son says he heard..” kind of deal? Is there anything in planning for permits and all that??

  3. Forgotten says:

The helipad is so the America’s Cup trophy can be delivered…. imagine that??!!

  4. Oh,I see now says:

It had to do with security as a main focus of the protest also with a job like theirs I bet if they were paid decent wages wouldn’t do overtime.Im sure that if there were no OT at Westgate they would have second jobs elsewhere to supplement there living expenses.

  5. SMH says:

Between them and Police they get paid a sh*t load of money. I say budget your checks accordingly. Or sell some of those fancy vehicles they drive. Please. My fiance is a Corrections Officer and he gets paid a handsome check monthly. Even without the overtime. That other government workers cannot get!!!!
