Court: Woman Pleads Guilty To Stealing Food

March 23, 2017

Appearing in Magistrates Court today, a 24-year-old woman pleaded guilty to stealing food from Marketplace in Hamilton.

Shalae Johnson pleaded guilty to stealing hot food and a Gatorade valued at around $15 from the Church Street store on February 23, 2017.

The Crown’s evidence was that Ms Johnson had been observed collecting hot food, selecting a bottle of Gatorade, and then going past the cashiers without paying.

Ms Johnson was arrested and questioned by police, with the Court hearing she admitted stealing and told Police that she had no money.

Questioned by Senior Magistrate Juan Wolffe, Ms Johnson told the Magistrate: “I figured I’d have a free lunch.”

Ms Johnson also told the Magistrate that she was not working.

The Magistrate ordered a Social Inquiry Report, set sentencing for 4th May, and granted bail at $500 with one surety.
